to let 7 y/o follow a juice diet

As per the other thread I'm struggling with my ds and especially for breakfast.

Was following the advice to make sure he gets complex carbs (whole grain cerial), skimmed milk and sugar free squash. Now looking into it more this seams bad old advice, I've gone back to normal juice.

Myself and dh have been following a juice diet for the last few weeks, basically a fresh juice of 5 vegetables and 2 fruit for breakfast and we feel amazing for for it.

D's really doesn't like eating in the morning, would it be OK to just let him have juice only like us?

I sympathise with your boy, OP. I hate and have always hated, breakfast. It's not a question of refusing or being awkward, it's a physical thing.

What about making him a banana 'milkshake' in the morning? Banana blitzed in milk, it's like a smoothie. I liked those, albeit not a massive glassful.

Waltonswatcher · 19/06/2014 19:20

Sometimes it's about timing , I have noticed that if I'm running late and feed my 2 yr old after 8.30 she eats far more than at our usual time of 7 .
When I rule the planet I will give all the school kids a top up breakfast ! I'm sure the staff would benefit from it too !

Rainbunny · 19/06/2014 19:22

How about fresh made juice AND something else? The thing about juice is that it lacks protein and your DS will need protein to help his brain function well at school. It doesn't have to be animal/dairy protein if that's a concern. Children have different nutritional needs from adults and their bodies are constantly going through growth stages (brains too - especially before ages 9). My 3 nephews are around 6-10 years old and they eat way more than me in a day (...ahem, "youngish" late thirties.) The truth is that this might be fine for you and DH but I really think kids need more.

MrsWinnibago · 19/06/2014 19:22

He needs some protein. A boiled egg or some cheese....and a slice of wholewheat bread.

MrsWinnibago · 19/06/2014 19:24

Waltons that's a great idea....I agree. My DC all want to eat later than we actually do in the morning. I think schools should do a 10.00 breakfast...or even start their day with it at 9.10.

It's far more civilized.

whois · 19/06/2014 19:24

Obviously a juice diet is a bad idea for your son.

Can you try him with a more wholesome smoothie? Banana, oats, yog or milk and some frozen strawberries or something? Need to make it the night before with the oats so they soak.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/06/2014 19:26

I was on your other thread and I would definitely give this a go. It's as much about breaking his old habits as adding new ones.

He may well get hungry earlier on in the day than normal, but that would be a good thing, because it will give you a window to introduce some healthier carbs/protein combos.

Those talking about eating disorders: this child eats nesquik cereal and squash for breakfast, is overweight and is a food refuser. While this isn't a perfect solution, it is better than his current breakfast and, as I said, breaks a bad habit.

Branleuse · 19/06/2014 19:26

why is everyone insisting on making this harder than it is.

Child wont eat breakfast. Really likes this particular smoothie. excellent. problem solved.

child does not need cheese or eggs or bread or any complicated variety of proteins and complex carbs. This child is already having issues with food.

let him have his smoothie. It wont be forever

parentalunit · 19/06/2014 19:27

It's a big load of sugar for first thing in the morning, is that good for him? I'm not sure it's such a good idea.

Maybe try the banana milkshake, you can add oatmeal for fibre/iron/protein and some greek yogurt for more protein. Well blended, the oatmeal won't be obvious. He might not even notice :)

Good luck.

MyrtleDove · 19/06/2014 19:31

Surely a 7yo needs semi-skimmed milk? Skimmed milk is bad because it's not fatty enough - children need fat and carbs.

StealthPolarBear · 19/06/2014 19:33

More sugar than banana in milk, really??

Chippednailvarnish · 19/06/2014 19:34

I really think you should ask your GP for more support about your son's eating, as you are treating him like an adult, when his nutritional needs are completely different to yours.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/06/2014 19:35

100g banana / 12g sugar
100g milk/ 5g sugar

StealthPolarBear · 19/06/2014 19:36

People on mn are never satisfied. If the op said her ds only ever at pancakes and crumpets for breakfast someone would be bound to suggest "a big smoothie made of veg and a little fruit, yum"

StealthPolarBear · 19/06/2014 19:37

Fine and how much in thr beetroot, celery, kiwi concoction

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2014 19:37

Stealth stop pointing out the ultimate futility of MN. Stop it!

LynetteScavo · 19/06/2014 19:40

It's sounds preferable to a bowl of cocoa pops.

MN seems to be obsessed with getting gluten and milk into children. Confused

StealthPolarBear · 19/06/2014 19:41

Mmm coco pops.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2014 19:46

Can you juice cocoa pops?

Lots of people mentioned oats, Lynette which are gluten free

StealthPolarBear · 19/06/2014 19:47

Yes but if you do they'll only count as one of your 5; a dayeven if you mix them with frosties and honey nut loops

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2014 19:57

Damn. Thankfully Cheesy Wotsits are a protein so that's the morning sorted.

StealthPolarBear · 19/06/2014 20:00

Or if a child only ate eggs mixes with a little asparagus and bran someone would be bound tk suggest a wrap. And flax seed - if thats somethjng you eat rather than something you rub on your hair

Hakluyt · 19/06/2014 20:01

"So many things can be healed by consuming fresh made juices. For children and adults." This is just not true. Honestly. Fresh juice can be delicious- although I have made some disgusting ones in my time- but thy don't heal anything

I can't see a problem with juice for breakfast- if he's not hungry he's not hungry. Make sure has a delicious healthy lunch. And maybe something for brake - and relax

DarkHeart · 19/06/2014 20:07
