to think McDonald's once per week is ok?

Two of the dc do an activity which doesn't finish until 6.45 on a school night so we usually have McDonald's. This consists of a chicken nugget happy meal and water and is term-time only, as well as being followed by walking our dogs. They eat very healthily the rest of the time with no chocolate/crisps/sweets and so on unless we go to the cinema, which is rare.

One of the dcs is borderline overweight and frommy previous marriage. ExH has said McDonalds should be banned from dcs diet, yet when he takes her for tea he takes her to an all you can eat Chinese or carvery, lets her eat as much as she likes, drink coke and have a big dessert. Aibu to think that's not a better alternative and that McDonald's once per week is ok?

I doubt anyone would comment on a parent cooking chicken nuggets and chips at home once a week as part of a balanced diet. No different if you pay someone else to do the cooking really

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 17/06/2014 22:06

and why are some people so desperate to get their 'I would never dream of eating at mcdonald's' crap in there - if you enjoy it, it's a treat, should you never eat anything you enjoy? I pig out once a week and I'm still losing weight.

WorraLiberty · 17/06/2014 22:06

There's nothing wrong with sweets being seen as a treat

Sweets are a treat and should be considered as such

The problems often start when people see them as part of their daily diet.

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 17/06/2014 22:07

also (again), I would say a chinese was worse, aren't they absolutely full of E numbers and sugar?

SinglePringle · 17/06/2014 22:07

Just don't see how reconstituted chicken / beef is a treat myself...

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 17/06/2014 22:09

I don't see how wine is a treat but there you go! each to their own...

WorraLiberty · 17/06/2014 22:13

I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than eat sushi but I can fully understand that other people feel differently.

In fact, from the age of about 2 or 3yrs old, even my kids understood that they liked different things to their friends.

WhoDaresWins · 17/06/2014 22:13

I think once a week is too much for anyone, overweight or not. Once a month is our limit.

When I took medical advice about gaining weight, they said eat anything I want but still to steer clear of fast food.

RiverTam · 17/06/2014 22:14

well, an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet is far worse for a child struggling with their weight that a Happy Meal! The thing I find with Maccy D's is that they fill you up for about half an hour and then you're starving again. They seem very devoid of nutrition.

Once a week term time sounds a bit much to me, is there nowhere else you could go? As it's lighter and the weather is nice could you have a picnic in the park?

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 17/06/2014 22:15

possibly because fast food is empty calories. it's hardly nutritious but to a lot of people, it tastes nice. i'm not bothered about mcds but I'll have a pizza once a week.

sixlive · 17/06/2014 22:16

Take a packed dinner, or a meal on a flask, it's very easy. I just can't see the appeal of fast food.

PinkHamster · 17/06/2014 22:16

Isn't it nice how we're all different? Personally I love McDonald's. That's not to say that it's all I eat or that I don't enjoy nice healthy homes cooked meals however I find the occasional chicken nugget meal just hits the spot quite nicely.

willowisp · 17/06/2014 22:18

Why is she/they overweight?

Why can't they have a decent tea before they go ?

My Dd's do several activities & come back similar or later times & just eat beforehand.

NeeNawNora · 17/06/2014 22:20

It's MacDonalds or an all you can eat place, not both in the same week. Dd prefers McDonald's but he insists on personally prefers the all you can eat places. She's overweight because she enjoys food and is greedy. She'll eat until she has stomach ache if allowed to, which he does and I don't. She's incredibly fit and active.

I can't imagine one meal a week having a decisive impact.

With regard to her weight, if she's only marginally overweight and still growing, particularly if she's on the verge of puberty, I think I wouldn't be overly inclined to make dramatic changes.

sooperdooper · 17/06/2014 22:22

I think any kind of take away every week is too much, I only have stuff like that once a month max

MrsJossNaylor · 17/06/2014 22:24

I think once a week is far too often. Sorry - but one in seven dinners is fast food? Surely you can see that's not right.

NeeNawNora · 17/06/2014 22:24

We don't have time to eat beforehand and other dc is autistic and weekly trip to McDonald's is a big part of his routine so can hardly take him there but pack dd a salad, after she's already had a packed lunch at school. Her school dinners aren't very nice at all so having a hot meal then instead isn't an option.

I think weekly is too much.

My children have fast food occasionally (like twice a year maybe).

Weekly is frequently.

fuzzpig · 17/06/2014 22:26

We try and stick to about once a month now.

FlyingFig · 17/06/2014 22:26

Christ as a child the majority of my meals surfaced golden-black from a grimy old chip pan and fresh fruit was considered a rare 'treat' Grin

Not very constructive but I can't understand why folks get so het up about what people outside of their own family choose to eat. Moderation and burning off any excess is the key, for most people, surely?

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/06/2014 22:30

I think weekly is a bit much but having said that it's a relatively small meal and provided your active and eat well the rest often time it's unlikely to be a problem
If your ex, however is taking his over weight Dd who struggles to control her eating, into a place which allows her to eat til it comes out her ears, on top of deserts and calorie laden cola he is Infact being the one who's irresponsible.

Mintyy · 17/06/2014 22:30

People aren't getting het up about anything. In case you hadn't noticed, op actually asked for opinions.

Yoruba · 17/06/2014 22:31

I would have takeaway/fast food once a week myself (if I could afford it) but not give it that often to my kids. How old is DC? Because that affects my opinion.
