To think it is literally not possible to be "offended" by poor grammar and punctuation as some posters claim.

Honestly, who gives a shit? The amount of smug wankery on here sometimes is unbelievable. Is there really any justification for snarking at someone about their use of full stops,( other than to try and make yourself look like a smartarse.)

OP posts:
thebodylovesspring · 16/06/2014 21:44

It doesn't irritate me and doesn't offend me because I would never notice.

I am amazed anyone notices and think it's beyond twattishness to comment.

Head girl bullying and pathetic cuntiness to help posters who do this look like a smug dickheads.

The Daisy post was just seriously nasty as has already been discussed on a current thread now. Who actually thinks it's acceptable to correct another posters spelling and grammar ffs.

Totally agree op.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 16/06/2014 21:52

YANBU.

But as I always say, it's can be such fun to point out the pedants' mistakes. Which are always always far more numerous than the ones made by the people whom they are looking down on.

I was on a thread earlier today with one of the grammar police. Hers was the first reply to a poor poster asking for help. Pretending she couldn't understand what the OP meant. which must make her a lot thicker than she likes to make out

Of course, as Murphy's Law comes into play in every such circumstance, her own smug superior put down of a reply had mistakes in it as well. Which always makes my day. Grin

Wailywailywaily · 16/06/2014 21:58

I am a poster who regularly misspells words to the point where the word actually means something else entirely. This has been pointed out to me regularly. I can't say I mind as I can see why some would find it difficult to follow my meaning if I write pidgin when I mean pigeon for eg.

I am irritated though when my use of english is corrected. The language is very versatile and I will carry on using it my way, offending others over grammar is not my problem.

I am not offended, but I do think it's a shame not to use words correctly.

I saw a thread recently where the OP had correctly used 'rein' yet the following two or three posters changed her phrase to 'reign.'

I know the meaning was obvious, but it meant those posters genuinely believed her use was wrong.

As a recruiter, I would draw certain conclusions about, and make interview decisions about, applicants who confused 'rein' and reign.'

I point it out so that people can learn not irritate bloody arsehole pedants like me

DrankSangriaInThePark · 16/06/2014 22:01

it's so much fun

(before they come and get me Wink)

thebodylovesspring · 16/06/2014 22:02

I actually think persistent offenders should be banned.

I was banned for a week for calling a poster a twat and an idiot. I deserved it fair enough but to be constantly smug and correcting others is to me just as fucking nasty.

Come on mumsnet HQ what do you think? It is bullying.

Mmm not a job interview though is it so not your place to actually correct another adult in a website.

Totally different things.

Good stay cba. Because no one else can either Grin

ExitPursuedByABear · 16/06/2014 22:12

I think it is good to make an effort with spelling, punctuation and grammar as it aids understanding. Words are important to me.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 16/06/2014 22:14

I'm not here to be taught spelling or grammar. I'm here to chat. It just reeks of smug.

Montegomongoose · 16/06/2014 22:15

No, of course it's not a job interview, it's an Internet forum.

But one day, there might be a job interview and if you can distinguish between two spellings, it might make a difference.

What's wrong with knowing the correct word?

candycoatedwaterdrops · 16/06/2014 22:15

BTW the "doing bribes" poster was an obvious troll. She had bumped up a couple of old threads just to vent her spleen on the same bloody topic.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 16/06/2014 22:16

I get someone to read over my job applications. Never yet had a problem with this method. I make mistakes on here all the time because I'm not in work mode.

riskycat123 · 16/06/2014 22:17

On a lighter note...punctuation saves lives! Hope you can see it x

losingmybelt · 16/06/2014 22:17

It's a cheap shot to criticize people for grammar.
I know when I use a tablet I make tons of mistakes.

The only thing I dislike is when people don't use paragraphs, but that's only because it makes it difficult to read.

riskycat123 · 16/06/2014 22:19

Oh lord ! I meant the photo... not the punctuation ..hahax

Electriclaundryland · 16/06/2014 22:22

I'm happy to put up with all sorts of spelling and grammar mistakes. Lots of us are posting on crappy phones and it can be a complete pain in the arse to type a meticulously perfect post. I hate the cunty, superior types who moan about it.

Montegomongoose · 16/06/2014 22:23

It's also a forum on which we correct and comment on each other's:

Diet (own and children's)
Clothing choices
Political opinions
Sexual preferences
Child rearing approaches
Family relations
Gardening issues

Etc.

I think commenting on vocabulary, unless it is to deliberately belittle or hound a poster, is equal to sharing robust opinions on the above.

I have observed speculation about a poster's motivations and personal choices that go way, way beyond a comment on vocabulary and far away from the original subject of the post.

Xcountry · 16/06/2014 22:23

I'm sorry but sometimes I find it hard to take some people seriously when their spelling and grammar are that bad. We all make mistakes (and autocorrect doesn't help a lot of the time) but I sometimes I look at what someone has written and think "did you actually write this or did my 4 year old?". I see it on a professional level as well with people handing in CVs and things and I just think - you want a job but clearly have not even run this through a quick spell check.

Roundedbuttocks90 · 16/06/2014 22:25

I fink it iz 4givable 2 use poor grammer and punctuation evry once in a wile. Speshally wen u iz wound up or in a rush. Sum ppl genuinly struggle wiv spellin.

On a serious note though my DH and DB both struggle with spelling and grammar. It hasn't affected their prospects though!! They are still vert intelligent. We all have strong points and we all have weaker points too! I'm horrendous at maths!
