AIBU?

To have left the Freecycle group?

Oh joy. I waited in all morning for someone who said they would be here at 11. When I emailed back at 11.30 asking where they were I was told they would be here in a couple of hours after she had a bath!

When I said we had to go out then and had been waiting in for her, I got a very rude email saying to 'keep the item'.

This is the final straw! This is far from the first time this has happened! So I have removed myself from Freecycle.

I am sick and tired of people thinking their time is more important than ours, and that they don't even need to bother with basic courtesy ie letting us know they are delayed.

So AIBU to pull out of freecycle? Grrr......Angry

Yanbu! I've had a bit of it, too.

It's just too big now. We need a feedback system,. You could list your item like eBay, and only accept requests from people with six months membership, and good feedback.

YANBU. This reminds me of when I listed a sofa as 'free to collector In The Friday-ad.

The only reply I got said 'can you deliver...'

Um no. Free to collector Hmm

I've about had enough of it too. Gave away an item recently and luckily it went to a deserving home. Think there are too many on there now who don't respect the founding principles of it. And it seriously pxxxs me off the number of grabby. 'requests' on there compared to offers. I'm going to try Preloved from now on.

maybe their English wasn't great Queen!

I love freecyle, I have been using it for years and had amazing stuff, I really have, occasionally very rarely I have had to let people down and usually I put stuff outside for people to collect,,,so I am not waiting but I am quite strict in my emails about people picking up.

I DO FEEl for people who only seem to get crap people....after using it for many year and of course mostly different people I just cant say its been over all bad at all.

YOu cant use it and be sanctimonious.... the people collecting are doing you a favour as well. People who pick up also get crap sometimes...

its a two way street. dont feel like the gracious giver over stuff you want to shift and probably couldnt sell.

I have had such amazing stuff on it i really have...amazing stuff....

Buddles what on earth is wrong asking if you deliver, sometimes people do - esp when its a large item like a sofa!!!!

Report
buddles · 16/06/2014 16:29

Because it was clearly stated as free to collector if I could have delivered I would have sold it and asked extra for delivery if they needed it delivering. I had no way of getting rid of it anywhere. I'm not giving away a sofa for free then hiring a van and driving it 20 miles for free!

GobbolinoCat · 16/06/2014 16:34

Buddles, quite a few people have replied to me when I have said I don't have the car on a particular day, where am I and they could drop it off.

how do they know you need a van to hire?

I had no way of getting rid of it anywhere* so you used it as a free garbage disposal service!

the person collecting, esp large sofa is also doing you a favour!

it annoys me people think they are mother theresa giving away what they dont need, then getting high and mighty about it!

its a two way street.

It wasn't garbage thank you very much. I don't drive, and my husbands car is not big enough to fit a bloody huge sofa in.

They didn't even offer anything for the delivery. Expected it all for free. They didn't even live near me. But I suppose being 7 months pregnant at the time they expected me to help my husband get a sofa into a Renault Clio.

And I'm sorry but if I see something I want listed as 'FREE to COLLECTOR' then I wouldn't dream of asking for it if I have no way of picking it up. Maybe that's just me.

In the end I found a charity that supplies furniture at a reduced cost to people on benefits etc but I suppose I'm out of order for giving them a sofa.

I wasn't complaining about it, it just reminded me and made me chuckle so I don't know why I have to defend myself to you.

Sorry Gobbolino I forgot you saw the whole exchange of messages between me and the sofa people.

Offering something "Free for collection" is not unreasonable and it isnt unreasonable to say "No, read the ad, if I could deliver it I would have said so!"

If someone who is collecting cant get it in their car, why on earth would you assume the offerer could? Saying that she expected someone to collect it because, you know, that what the ad said, is not being high and mighty at all!

I am sorry, I just do not see your gripe here, they just asked if you could deliver, there is nothing wrong with that, they dont know you feel like mother theresa and pissed off you couldnt sell it and felt very gracious for g
Iving it away.

I find two strategies help me manage freecycle:

  1. I have the settings so that I don't get email notifications. I just click over to the group when I feel like looking.

  1. Each time I offer something, I include the following message:

"Item is offered on a first-come first-served basis. If you miss an agreed-upon collection time, the item will go to the next person who requested it. Any emails explaining why you deserve the item more than others will be deleted without a response."

Were you the person who wanted my sofa Gobbolino?

I wasn't pissed off/feeling high and mighty/mother Theresa or anything. Am I moaning about it? No.

I just needed my sofa gone quickly. I could have sold it but needed it gone ASAP.

Pick on someone else.

buddles I feel for you. I wanted to get rid of a huge three seater settee. It was a substantial base with three large cushions as the seat and three large cushions as the back. I did have a collector. A father and son turned up and the 'student' wanted it for his flat. They strapped it to the top of their car. I'm glad it went and saved me the £25 council fee.

why be rude, maybe the persons in dire straights and trying to set up home?

on my freecule riht now someone is giving away something and has said sorry no car collection only...

loads of times people have said will deliver locally, or as said, when i have not had car they have sometimes delivered.

its very fast moving and often people give away to the first people who reply, in which case you dont have much time to think and mull over the ad....people who say - we will give time to those who dp not have intenternt access and so on, gives you more time to construct a reasonable reply

buddles · 16/06/2014 16:58

And yes there is nothing wrong with asking if I could deliver. I politely told them no and the reasons I couldn't.

It was FREE TO COLLECTOR do you have trouble understanding what that means?!

I love freecyle, and I think people have a right to gripe about people not turning up, but to moan about someone asking whether you deliver is un fair. I am not picking on you I just think your gripe is un fair.

your putting too much thought into it.

yanbu.

I gave up on freecycle about 4yrs ago. Full of time wasters, bullshitters and people who are incapable of saying please or thank you.

Shame really, it was lovely at first.

I've never used FreeCycle. And I'm not likely to now!
