Why does Hilary Mantel have to be identified by her married name?

Why do all of the women, no matter what their achievements have to be identified by their marital status?

There are many more "ms" this year - who are clearly the none of your business brigade

But Why oh Why do the media accept the list in this discriminatory form?

Listed there for Hilary Mantel it speaks for itself. Hilary Mantel, award winning author and Someone's Wife. It needs booting back to the C19.

YANBU. They probably think they're following some sort if etiquette. But actually it's ruder to discriminate against women than to list them without a title.

The official honors list is a legal document though isn't it? Therefore if Hilary Mantel is known as Hilary Mcewen in a legal sense on the electoral register and council tax bill then it should be listed.

if she does not use her married name legally, the I presume it wouldn't be there.

The legal document is the actual certificate itself.

The 'list' is exactly that, a list of the names of the people who are gong to receive the award (and supporting legal document).

In all nations of UK, your "legal" name is one you go by provided there is no intention to defraud. So no matter how irksome others may find it, as long as the recipient uses either/both names then is nothing illegal, nor even inaccurate, here. Nor is there discrimination, as everyone is receiving the award, not matter how they are styled (and it's not hugely clear if your style is part of your legal name anyhow).

Take a look at this Wimbledon female players shown as Mrs J Bloggs J being Joe!

Surely not all these players changed their name?

Using their husband's first name initial is awful - complete erasure of their identity.

To be honest anyone who accept a trinket from the Royal Family given in the name of the Empire has already compromised themselves in so many ways and tacitly bought into a whole load of imperialist nonsense that they shouldn't be surprised that it is deeply sexist too: 'outmoded and anachronistic award is outmoded and anachronistic shock'

As a soon to complete PhD student, I did purse my lips when Hilary Mantel was described as Dr Mantel when she only has an honorary Doctorate. Bloody fly by nights.

Things like this have historical links for future generations.

If be more interested if the participants were moaning about it. Not heard a thing? Finding it hard to care as an observer...? And I like the awards etc so thought this would interest me.

Well, it's the Birthday Honours. Wikipedia: The United Kingdom passed legislation to establish gender-blind succession in 2013 but delayed implementation until the 15 other countries which share the same monarch effect similar changes in their succession laws.

2013! And we still have to wait until all the other Commonwealth realms have got time to pass new legislation. As the new third in line, the Cambridges' cutey-pie, is male, I don't expect they'll be placing it as a high priority thing. It could be years before that's sorted out.

If a female elder child can't inherit the throne over her younger brother, you're on a hiding to nothing with allowing women to keep maiden names when they're awarded an honour!
