Why does Hilary Mantel have to be identified by her married name?

Why do all of the women, no matter what their achievements have to be identified by their marital status?

There are many more "ms" this year - who are clearly the none of your business brigade

But Why oh Why do the media accept the list in this discriminatory form?

why do they get married in the first place then? i'm not married, i am a person with my own name i don't want to take on someone elses

If I wanted to be identified by my maiden name, I wouldn't take my husbands if I married. If I do marry, I don't know if I'll take his name (depends on the name!) but whichever I choose I'll stay with.

Maybe they actually want to use the married name? Some people actually do.

Women are asked their marital status.
Men are not.
If women do not answer they go down as "Ms"

If they use their maiden name for work, their married name is listed as well - no option.

That is out and out sex discrimination.

Women will be asked their marital status so they know whether to list them as Miss or Mrs...as you know there is no point in asking men the same question because they will be listed as Mr anyway.

Ms is perfectly acceptable for those who feel it's no-one else's business.

If they have taken their husband's name, regardless of the name they use for work, then why would they have a problem with it being listed as well?

Surely if they had a problem they wouldn't have taken the name in the first place?

It does appear certain women expect ALL women to want to keep their maiden name and not be reffered to as anything by ms just because that is what they want. Other women are happy to take their partners name and that is their choice to make.

They have the choice to be Miss, Mrs or Ms in the list. Or Dr or Professor for that matter. So I don't see a problem.

Many women who use their maiden name at work use their married name socially. They might want both names on such a list. Legally it may actually be necessary, to list all names someone uses on it.

Not sure how they'd deal with the lady who used Mrs Maiden name?

YANBU. If a woman is awarded an honour her marital status (or ownership) should be irrelevant.

It surely cannot be that difficult to let those (of both sexes) receiving honours decide for themselves which (if any) style they use.

I seems very strange to me to go for "Edith, Mrs Weston" when that's simply not a current usage.

It's infuriating, and so ingrained. I can't see anything changing in our lifetimes .

Some women are on the list with no reference to whether they are married, for example Prof Sarah Cleaveland, which contrasts with Dr Mantel, who is also listed as Mrs McEwan.

But on skimming the list, I can see any women who are not doctors or professors or otherwise titled not listed as Miss Mrs or Ms, whereas there are plenty of untitled men.

I wonder if this unfair treatment of women flouts any EU equality legislation?

THe only woman I've spotted so far with NO title is the lady from the army in Aldershot

I feel VERY strongly about this because I use my maiden name for work.
DH did not help me through my accountancy exams - he has his own life
if I were to get a gong, his name would be listed.
