To think if you go to the dog beach you should expect dogs

I took my pooch to the beach for the first time today. The beach is huge and split in half, one half is for dogs, and there were many of them. Most dogs were off the lead and playing freely.

A few families were also on the dog beach, but were without a dog. However, a few families were obviously irate with the dogs running and swimming everywhere.

Is it me, but if you sit on the dog half of the beach, you can't get huffy over dogs running around.

One father and daughter were on inflatables in the sea and 3 dogs were running into the sea next to them and the girl was obviously worried and scared of them. The owners called their dogs back and walked up the beach a bit, which was good of them.

Surely though, if you don't want dogs around, bloody well go to the dog free half of the beach!

I am going to go against the tide again
But I don't think dogs that might jump up, run off or harass people, even in a friendly way should be off lead either tbqh
And I have dogs!
Your dog needs to be with you and under your control if off lead

FisherQueen · 15/06/2014 19:46

It is not the same thing - they called her over, interacted with her and fed her bread FFS. They WANTED her to come over, it was quite clear and no picnic involved. Is there any reason why you are accusing me of lying? Have I inadvertently pissed on your cornflakes?

And yes a dog that chases a jogger or does any of the other things should be put back on a lead - haven't said otherwise. I give up a huge amount of my free time working with my local authority and the Corporation of London to promote responsible dog ownership and educate owners. My other dog is a therapy dog and I work with children and adults with dog phobia's. I have a fecking MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour and I have just spent my weekend at a conference on dog behaviour. I'm not quite sure why I am being portrayed as a jogger chasing, picnic ruining, small child scaring dog owner.

matildasquared · 15/06/2014 19:46

And now again you'll have people coming on to say their dog is always under control and anyway it's impossible to control dogs all the time and why are you victimising dog owners?

Like I said, these threads draw the inconsiderate dog owners out of the woodwork.

FisherQueen · 15/06/2014 19:47

Oops sorry matilda - we obviously x-posted there. Blush

Owllady · 15/06/2014 19:50

Well I would be furious if people enticed my dig and fed her bread as well tbh
Maybe I am a control freak Confused but why would you feed an animal without asking

People will call dogs over all the time, they'll stroke them without asking and generally treat them like public property.

Unfortunately where I am we do have a lot of irresponsible owners - it's still a minority but definitely a large one. It's why I spend so much of my time trying to improve it. The stereotypical "scary" owner (I run free classes through the council) is usually much easier to reach and work with then the wealthy owners who, in reality, work far too much to really responsibly care for a dog.

Owllady · 15/06/2014 19:52

And bread really isn't good for dogs. It's not good for poultry either but I am not sure if ducks come under that caveat as I have only ever kept fowl

FisherQueen · 15/06/2014 19:53

I wasn't best pleased but they didn't mean any harm. I just explained why it wasn't a good idea (bread is not good for dogs and some will have allergies etc) and they apologised. So again - no harm, no foul.

matildasquared · 15/06/2014 20:03

Have I inadvertently pissed on your cornflakes?

YOUR DOG DID.

FisherQueen · 15/06/2014 20:08

SHE WAS ONLY BEING FRIENDLY!

SirChenjin · 15/06/2014 20:12

WELL THAT'S OK THEN!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 15/06/2014 20:36

These threads are why I avoid walking the dogs on the beach in grockle season. I get the place to myself when the sky is grey and the wind is howling, except for perhaps a couple of the local fishermen.

Owllady · 15/06/2014 20:44

Camber sands is too far east to get grockles:o they get dfl's

SirChenjin · 15/06/2014 20:46

What's a dfl?!

matildasquared · 15/06/2014 20:48

Dogger!

SirChenjin · 15/06/2014 21:08

I am glad you cleared up the fucking love/love fucking issue there - I know some of you really, really love your dogs (in a kind of Peter Andre really, really loves his kids kind of way), but I thought that was taking the love a bit far Grin

Hakluyt · 15/06/2014 21:12

"I might have missed it in this thread but have any dog owners had a picnic with children on a beach, only to have it spoilt by a dog coming over to raid the larder or kick sand about?"

Yep. Me.
