To think if you go to the dog beach you should expect dogs

I took my pooch to the beach for the first time today. The beach is huge and split in half, one half is for dogs, and there were many of them. Most dogs were off the lead and playing freely.

A few families were also on the dog beach, but were without a dog. However, a few families were obviously irate with the dogs running and swimming everywhere.

Is it me, but if you sit on the dog half of the beach, you can't get huffy over dogs running around.

One father and daughter were on inflatables in the sea and 3 dogs were running into the sea next to them and the girl was obviously worried and scared of them. The owners called their dogs back and walked up the beach a bit, which was good of them.

Surely though, if you don't want dogs around, bloody well go to the dog free half of the beach!

Yanbu at all. Can't people read! If you go in a dog beach expect free running dog doh!

AmazingMorning · 14/06/2014 22:26

I'm a dog owner but not a lover of all dogs. I like my yorkie as she is tiny and wouldn't take up much of the beach :) I do think dog owners are getting a hard time at the moment.

Goblinchild · 14/06/2014 22:30

Disorientating for me, but I'm still completely with the dog owners on this one. Grin
If it's a dog friendly beach, they should be allowed to be as daft and doggy as they choose, bouncing and running up to people and dribbling and all those ikky things they do. Why on earth not, in a zone where they are free to be dogs?

matildasquared · 14/06/2014 22:34

I actually wish we could implement this system in parks. We have a beautiful park in my town but unfortunately a critical mass of inconsiderate dog-owners have turned it into a dog run so you can't have a picnic or sunbathe or let toddlers crawl around on any of the lovely grassy slopes. Maybe we should just put a fence down the middle and designate one side the Dog Zone.

PootlewasthebestFlump · 14/06/2014 22:38

We had this same problem and I knew you were referring to Camber Sands! A couple set their towel and windbreak out for sunbathing just as you walk down the path past the massive sign telling you dogs were permitted then got irate and aggressive because dogs were running about.

There was about 2 miles of hardly used non-dog beach just the other side of the path...

Wide spacious beaches are great places for dogs to run and play to burn off energy so that at other times they can be calm and well behaved. Very few dog-friendly beaches left now, it's all given over to kids and dogs are banned.

qazxc · 14/06/2014 22:41

Once the dogs are under control and the owners clean up any deposits their animal might make, YANBU.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/06/2014 22:42

If I saw such people on a beach designated for dogs and they were complaining I would kindly point out that this a dog beach and they should go elsewhere!

LynetteScavo · 14/06/2014 22:47

Maybe non dog owners didn't understand about the different parts of the beach.... It's not something I ever thought about before I went on holiday Caithness dog owning friends.

SisterMoonshine · 14/06/2014 22:53

Is it really a beach for dogs?
Rather than just an area where they're not banned.
I live by the sea and haven't heard of a dog beach either.

AmazingMorning · 14/06/2014 22:59

We have a dog beach here :) People need to realize a beach to a dog is like soft play to a kid. Just let them be. If you don't like dogs go to a beach that doesn't allow them. You as a human can go on any beach, a dog owner with a dog in tow cannot. Why do people like to complicate stuff?

whereisshe · 14/06/2014 23:01

For all the people saying prissily "as long as the dog is under control" etc etc - on a dog beach, designated as such, bounding about and having fun IS under control. Just as you wouldn't expect a toddler in a soft play place to sit quietly and not run around or run up to anyone. It's not the end of the world if a perfectly well-mannered dog comes up to you to say hello in an area where dogs are allowed off lead. I don't like children screaming in supermarkets (by way of comparison) but as I understand that to be a normal part of community life, I build a bridge and get over it. And I don't whine about it online.

PiperRose · 14/06/2014 23:07

whereisshe I think I love you.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 14/06/2014 23:10

I wish we had a dog beach.

I live on the Suffolk coast and the beaches are usually full of tourists. Dogs aren't allowed in the summer season. Which is understandable but if we had a dog beach we could take him with us. We had him before we had children and to me he is my adopted child. Grin It feels wrong to spend a day at the beach without him. He adores the sea and is actually really well behaved but we can't take him.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 14/06/2014 23:11

whereisshe I do too Grin

Aeroflotgirl · 14/06/2014 23:14

My understanding of a dog only beach is that tgey can run, and be free as they wish.

AmazingMorning · 14/06/2014 23:15

Aeroflotgirl obviously not.

DanyStormborn · 14/06/2014 23:16

YANBU. I understand why most beaches are dog free in high season - it's so people don't have to deal with the mess when people don't pick it up. We don't have a dog. Dog mess bothers me but the mere presence of dogs doesn't. I would go to either part of the beach as we like dogs and as long as the poo is picked up promptly aren't bothered by sharing sand and water with them. However if one of my kids was scared of dogs I would select the dog-free half.

RabbitSaysWoof · 14/06/2014 23:18

Last time my dog was off lead at our dog beach he tucked into someones massive tin of party sausage rolls Blush
Luckily they were in the water at the time so none the wiser.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/06/2014 23:20

Well if I had a dog, and there was a beach designated for dogs, my dog would be running as free as the wind Grin

Hakluyt · 14/06/2014 23:21

Even on a dog beach you don't want a strange dog jumping into your picnic........

Aeroflotgirl · 14/06/2014 23:22

Then don't have a picnic on a dog beach, go to the dog free bit!

Bowlersarm · 14/06/2014 23:25

YANBU.

If dogs are allowed, then people shouldn't moan about them.

scottishmummy · 14/06/2014 23:26

Dog beach?never heard of it.but yes if one go to dog beach, expect dogs

LastMinuteLil · 14/06/2014 23:35

Even on a dog beach you don't want a strange dog jumping into your picnic........

You hate dogs but choose to eat your picnic on the 'dogs allowed' part of the beach?

It's almost like you're going out of your way to have something to complain about...
