I get this impression and have no idea why - is this my imagination or is this the case?

Where are you originally from?

I am thoroughly English.

Yeah Smithys is now a shop Hmm

FannyFifer · 15/06/2014 21:03

NafNaf jerseys and Mckenzie ones.

Yup Smithy's we used to pop in there to get free tickets to get into the Lido. :)

FannyFifer · 15/06/2014 21:04

Society now it's called.

ohldoneedtogetagrip · 15/06/2014 21:04

Franx in Shawlands..a blast from the past--l bought many a classic clothing item in there Wink. Minsky's nightclub across the road I remember carrying a friend into a taxi and then wheeling her through the corridors of the Victoria Infirmary just before midnight in a wheelchair to get her into the nursing home.
Rassle dazzlen WMW Goldbergs Bremners--where are all these great stores now....
We have Braehead and Silverburn but they can't compete

laracroft2001 · 15/06/2014 21:06

Ah those were the days!!

I remember the Jean Scene in the mercat having a closing down sale for like (8 years) - is it still there?!

One thing that is a disappointment now is the Carlton fudge doughnuts... I remember them as a proper treat when I was young, and when I was up recently I went to get one for my (English) husband. Not only was it like £1.20 but seriously not what I remembered!!

FergusSingsTheBlues · 15/06/2014 21:06

Does anybody remember The Garage? I broke into it on Friday nite through fire escape. Not been since 97...twas...like walking into Narnia.

FannyFifer · 15/06/2014 21:09

Hunters made the best fudge donuts, it shut down prob about 8 years ago. The Carlton ones are a piss poor substitute!
Bet it's hunters ones you remembered.

laracroft2001 · 15/06/2014 21:09

No it was def Carlton (yellow icing?!) Hunters was up the postings wasn't it?
Can't believe I have missed out!!

tilliebob · 15/06/2014 21:10

Carlton was bought over a few years ago and it's not the same. My wee gran would be spinning in her grave, she'd only make a bacon roll with a Carlton morning roll

tilliebob · 15/06/2014 21:11

Yeah Hunters was up in the Postings. As a teen there was a clothes shop in there just at that end of the Postings that we used to buy clothes in. No idea what that was called though!

EddieStobbart · 15/06/2014 21:11

I'm friends with a Kdy lass who took me on an Oscars-Jackieos night out once. We walked along the sea front - I marvelled at all the shopping trolleys embedded in the sand and she said she'd never noticed. They must have improved trolley security since then!

They still do the burning down south you know...

FannyFifer · 15/06/2014 21:12

Hunters were a million times better fudge donuts. The had brownish icing on top. :)

laracroft2001 · 15/06/2014 21:13

I can't remember the name of the clothes shop but I think I know the one u mean. I do remember there being a Tandy, a art shop and a fish shop!

laracroft2001 · 15/06/2014 21:14

And the William lows (WM Lows) which is now a tesco!

tilliebob · 15/06/2014 21:16

Fish shop is still there as far as I know. It's mainly charity shops and empty units these days. The Mercat is much the same with some bloody phone shops thrown in.

We were talking about old shops last night when we were on the piss in Kdy (first time ever for mates from Dunf/Perth) and I was talking about Browns Bazaar and Sharps, where we had to get our high school uniform from back in the day.

laracroft2001 · 15/06/2014 21:18

Oh yeah sharps!! My gran worked in there when she retired! I think Sharps is still there isn't it?? (When we came
Up to get married people suggested Sharps for mens suits?!)

tilliebob · 15/06/2014 21:20

Nah Sharps is a polish deli as far as I remember now Hmm.

laracroft2001 · 15/06/2014 21:22

Lol!!
I was mightily impressed there was a Costa on the high st when I was last up.

It used to be that Miss Maudes was as good as you got!!

tilliebob · 15/06/2014 21:28

I used to love Oliver's coffee shop - loved their tuna subs and used to nick their mugs

LabMonkey · 15/06/2014 21:40

Scot living in England

LabMonkey · 15/06/2014 21:45

Kdy born and bred too, left at 17 to go to uni and never looked back. My family aren't from there so since my parents moved I have no reason to go back. Still have a lot of school friends there.

whitepuddingsupper · 15/06/2014 21:46

Hunters did the best filled rolls, you couldn't beat Miss Maude's toasties and soup a couple of years ago but I've not been since it shut and reopened with new owners.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 15/06/2014 21:59

Glad someone else remembers Franx ohIdoneedtogetagrip Grin

I still expect to see the silver and black sign every time I go past.

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2014 22:54

My mum had an Oliver s soup cup thing till recently I assumed she bpught it godmy mums a thief

BuggersMuddle · 15/06/2014 23:12

I had a fluorescent lime green cropped top with gypsy sleeves (am not sure exactly what gypsy sleeves are to be honest, but I remember it well), from WEWW when I was about 12. I'm sure anyone seeing it now would complain about the sexualisation of weans. I suspect it was hideous. I didn't event know WEWW was a Scottish thing.

I don't do these Dundonian / Aberdonian baked goods (much to DP's chagrin) but this thread has me fair fancying a Scotch pie & beans. That might just be the drink right enough...
