What's up with 'back in the day' is it an Americanism?

Ginger is the diabetes inducing beverage that makes Scotland go round.

Grin Alice, I don't know how someone hasn't buried me under the patio yet. I probably deserve it.

Ginger is juice (fizzy pop you may call it doon there)
Can I get is what everyone says here...
I hate it when people say 'awesome' about everything. It's really not.

I can cope with most Americanisms, but my bad makes me want to scream. My sister wrote it in an email yesterday and I was //hmm.

Semolinafortea · 13/06/2014 20:21

Can I get just sounds so incredibly rude to my ears. What's wrong with 'please may I have'.

Report
littlepeas · 13/06/2014 20:21

Ha Hmm fail!

I'm in Scotland. I don't say "movie" or "can I get"

I don't mind either of them but don't get me started on "prom"

Agree with the scottishisms.

Although I say film. Or maybe filum if I have been around my family recently.

I am sorry to say I also say 'dude'. It started ironically and now it is just in my mouth ready to fall out.

is ginger up there in scottish land irn bru??

Report
squoosh · 13/06/2014 20:23

A British person saying 'my bad' is like an American saying 'cor blimey guvnor'. Wrong.

Report
Passmethecrisps · 13/06/2014 20:23

Just general fizzy juice. Anything fizzy is ginger in some parts. Not where I am from but my relatives in glasgow type places said it

I thought I was the only person on MN who got the rage when Brits say "movie" - people on here are very fond of their (cringe) "movie nights".

And I don't like Brits saying "you guys" - what's wrong with "you lot" Confused

Report
Aliceinvodkaland · 13/06/2014 20:24

or is it ginger ale?

Report
Passmethecrisps · 13/06/2014 20:24

Nothing at all to do with actual ginger

I'm not saying it's technically grammatically wrong but, to me " can I get" means "can I get it myself?" which in most cases doesn't apply. "Can I have?"sounds better because you are acknowledging someone has to bring it to you.Get sounds aggressive I think.
