Not a thread about a thread but inspired by another thread...how often do you clean, is your house showhome style, or organically dirty Grin.

Just being nosy really and wondering where I am on the clean house scale.

Itisafact - it's good that you are questioning it (that sounds patronising but is not intended to be, is meant wholly sincerely). I used to be a compulsive cleaner and it made me ill trying to maintain those senseless standards whilst I had two under 2

It's like that saying "nobody on their death bed says that they wish that they had spent more time in the office" - transpose cleaning for office.

Do only what is necessary and don't make it into an art form. Cleaning is endless Groundhog Day and not good for the soul

CremeEggThief · 12/06/2014 22:30

Very tidy, as I have a place for everything and am slightly obsessed with order. My cupboards snd drawers are as tidy as the visible areas. I almost went to bed without washing up last night, but I just couldn't in the end.

Clean enough- I did bathrooms two days ago and vacuumed downstairs today. I haven't got around to vacuuming upstairs dusting and mopping the kitchen floor this week. Never mind!

D0oinMeCleanin · 12/06/2014 22:38

Itsafact, I have two dc, two dogs, two rats (who are both male and yet one of them has just given birth Confused ) and the kids have friends around each day.

I do about an hour each day, split into small bursts. My house is fairly neat and clean.

I do it bit by bit and if it don't look dirty I don't clean it, with the exception of the counter tops and the toilet, which are done daily.

I do the skirting boards only if I notice dust, even then I only clean the dusty bits with a damp cloth. Ditto cupboard fronts and insides, the fridge gets a quick wipe about once a fortnight.

Every now and again I might empty, clean and reorganise a cupboard or drawer but only when things start falling on me when I open them.

Lizzie568 · 12/06/2014 22:38

Mines a right mess at the moment, but we've only just moved in so that's my excuse.

I clean kitchen, all bathrooms and vacuum and polish downstairs once a week. Kitchen gets wiped every day. Bedrooms get done when I think they need it. But usually everything is at least tidy. I hate clutter.

Janethegirl · 12/06/2014 22:39

My cupboards are tidy and I could find most things in them in the dark, but the rest of the house is messy. I hate housework, so I only clean the kitchen and bathroom on a regular basis. Bedrooms may only get hoovered on a monthly basis if they're lucky!

D0oinMeCleanin · 12/06/2014 22:39

Oh and each night before bed, I have quick scout about the downstairs and put things away. I feel more in control and able to let upstairs slip a bit if downstairs is very tidy and clean.

Clean while DS is in school. Then hoover about 3 times a day! I cannot sit around mess. Don't mind toys out obviously... But rubbish/clothes has to be moved!!

D0oinMeCleanin · 12/06/2014 22:43

I didn't Corus the resident Rat expert at the local petting zoo did. I got sick of handing them back to her and saying "Nope, that girl has balls" so left the kids to pick and intended to get Mr. Rat the snip if we ended up with one of each. Sadly, Mrs. Rat was already upduffed. We've only had them 2 weeks.

The babies are going back to the petting zoo once weaned and Mr Rat is booked in for the snip.

The petting zoo look after them really well. They all live in a giant shed, which is very clean and has lots of hidey holes and things to climb on. I'm happy to give them back, it's just that their keeper is slighty blind and the shed is quite dark.

Mrs Rat is a bit of a rubbish mum. She keeps kicking babies out every time she leaves the nest and leaves them where they landed. I have to keep putting them back. The kids are enjoying it though, so it's not all bad.

That's exactly it, it's like Groundhog Day. I just need perspective really on how clean it should be, I'm cleaning instead of doing nice things.

kali an average day is
2x dishes breakfast and main meal
Kitchen worktops throughout the day
Hob, fronts of cupboards once a day
Damp dusting all furniture downstairs daily
Hoover and mop downstairs usually twice a day sometimes can get away with once
Bathroom every day
Deep clean of a different room most days e.g skirting boards, banisters, pipes etc in bathroom or moving furniture out. Plus laundry.

I'm starting to get in dh's nerves I think. I'm used to be quite messy and I'm scared of slipping into that again.

Not nearly as clean as I'd like it to be! Seems like a never ending task in this house Hmm

Sweep floors around 4 times a day at least, Hoover carpets upstairs twice a week. Mop floors every few days. Clean surfaces every other day. Clean bathroom weekly although wipe down every time I go in! Clean kitchen after every meal. Tidy constantly!

BerylStreep · 12/06/2014 22:55

We do a proper clean once a week - DH hoovers and mops / steams, and I tidy, dust and wipe surfaces.

Kitchen surfaces are cleaned several times daily, along with packing / emptying dishwasher.

We do 2 loads of washing a week, 3 at a max, but we have a massive machine.

My ideal is to declutter one drawer / cupboard a week as well.

BerylStreep · 12/06/2014 22:58

OP, I had cross posted with you.

That looks like a lot of unnecessary cleaning.

Greenstone · 12/06/2014 23:01

It's not great at the minute tbh. We cook from scratch and even though I batch cook a lot to reduce mess and time, I'm still constantly trying to tidy up. Kitchen counters get scrubbed at least twice a day and yet they are now covered in clutter and I want to weep at the pointlessness of it all. Bathroom is cleaned about twice a week or as and when, but at the moment our hoover is broken and we won't get a chance to get a new one before weekend - I am cracking up, everything looks filthy. We have far too much stuff and dh hoards all of his old clothes and refuses to throw out - I have just told him he needs to get rid by this weekend or I will do it.

Neither of us is clean/neat by nature but it bothers me sooooo much more now I have a dc. I can't believe how clean some of your homes are; I work part-time and tidy constantly but it's just never - ending and I don't have the stamina for obsessive cleaning - I need selfish me-time to work on hobby, dawdle on internet and drink tea.

I do totally accept that we have too much stuff and too little storage though. Think life will feel easier if we constantly reduce the volume of shit.

Itisafact · 12/06/2014 23:02

If you mop your floor once a week what if it gets dirty again in between? Mine doesn't stay clean for long.

OP posts:
D0oinMeCleanin · 12/06/2014 23:02

Why do you damp dust furniture daily? I spot clean and give them a quick rub over while I'm doing it. I only use a damp cloth, I don't bother with bowls of soapy water or anything. They look fine.

Ditto fronts of cupboards. If I notice a spot I spray a bit of cleaner on it and wipe the rest of the door while I'm at it.

I don't do any deep cleaning. Spot cleaning keeps on top of it all.

AGypsiesWife · 12/06/2014 23:03

I live in a 24' trailer so it has to be uncluttered and is cleaned every day as are the kitchen and bathroom outhouses and the yard. I work outside the home but am often back by mid to late afternoon, so that allows time to cook and clean. We have had all of our five children sleeping in trailers of the same size at one time or another - although they have left the nest now, they still come to stay. Its cosy chaos, a laugh and the morning mess of the bedding is all stored away once breakfast is done. (Couldn't answer for the state of some of the cupboards tho.... a closed door hides a merciful amount!)

D0oinMeCleanin · 12/06/2014 23:05

I "mop" as in bucket of hot water weekly, but spot clean the rest of the time. If I notice a spot I spray a bit of cleaner on it and swish a damp mop across the rest of the floor while I'm there.

The only thing I do properly every day is counter tops, the kitchen sink and hoovering. And by properly I mean squirt a bit of cleaner on it and swish a cloth around. See the pattern? Grin

Itisafact · 12/06/2014 23:05

I don't know why I do it daily really, it's just routine now I suppose.

My house is show room, always, and I really want it up not be. I have a cleaner but I still spend a good part of my day cleaning. I need to let go but I can't and it makes me sad :(
