Not a thread about a thread but inspired by another thread...how often do you clean, is your house showhome style, or organically dirty Grin.

Just being nosy really and wondering where I am on the clean house scale.

Clean and hygienic. I hate clutter so very little lying around. If you found my clean washing pile (4DC) hidden in a wardrobe you would probably be Shock but at least it's clean!

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 12/06/2014 21:59

I like it to look tidy, even if my stuff is shoved in cupboards and drawers cos I can't be arsed to sort it all out. It's never properly clean. However, as I don't live with anyone else, I don't need to justify it to anyone! Grin

MrsKoala · 12/06/2014 22:00

An utter shit tip. DH is away and i am running on empty. 21mo tazmanian devil, heavily pregnant, learning to drive 2-4hrs a day. No time to do any housework at all. I am just about loading/unloading the dishwasher, cooking and doing laundry. The cleaning hasn't been done for over 3wks Blush DS has just gone to sleep and i have sat down, had a white magnum and read some emails. I suppose i could start cleaning now but i may cry, so i think i'll just go to bed instead.

I think storage makes a huge difference mynameis, we had 0 storage in our old place it was a nightmare.

Would so love a dishwasher but no room for one.

Those of you that say messy but clean, do you clean around the mess? I don't get how it can be clean but messy e.g how can a worktop be clean if it's full of clutter? I'm not being funny by the way just cloned ring how you get around it.

Clean enough but probably no where near the correct 'Mumsnet' standard. I am honestly amazed at the time some of you must spend doing housework and the domestic arguments that seem to be caused. I hoover once a fortnight (ish) upstairs and we have wooden floors downstairs which I sweep about once a week. I try and remember to wash the kitchen floor once a week but don't always; bathrooms get a quick clean a couple of times a week. Kitchen gets cleaned up as I cook.

We are all reasonably tidy, I rarely go in my teenager's room Grin.

Disclaimer - I don't have pets or small children but really, what do you all do all the time Hmm? I don't spend more than 20-25 mins a day on cleaning (not including cooking/laundry and ironing - but even that doesn't take me long Grin).

ImogenQuy · 12/06/2014 22:04

itis Our lovely (and incredibly efficient) cleaner also tidies the kitchen (properly!) and puts things lying around in other rooms into piles so she can clean. She comes every week and I couldn't live without her. So that means the clutter is building up on a clean surface (except in kitchen, where I tidy up every day because I can't face mess when I come down to make coffee in the morning).

Itisafact · 12/06/2014 22:06

I wish I could only Hoover and do the floors once a week, more like twice a day here for downstairs and I don't have dc's yet Shock. I do have pets though who are very mucky.

Pretty tidy tbh. Right now kids are in bed so all toys hidden in toy cupboard. No clutter around etc. iPad and water on table is only thing there.

We live fairly minimalistic tbh so never much clutter. Everyone even children tidy up as they go. Cups straight in dishwasher, clothes straight in basket, stuff in its place. If it doesn't have storage it goes to charity!

ImogenQuy · 12/06/2014 22:07

No pets here. DH usually runs the hoover round downstairs once in between the cleaner's visits, and we have a little handheld to deal with localised outbreaks of crumbs.

Viviennemary · 12/06/2014 22:08

It's usually messy because we have too much stuff and not enough storage. If I had a bigger house I think it would be tidier but I'm told it wouldn't be. The trouble with cleaning is that it never actually stays clean.

D0oinMeCleanin · 12/06/2014 22:09

Ah yes storage is key. I left 99% of what I/the DC own for Ex. It's made keeping tidy much easier Grin I'm nice like that.

I only bring things round once I've found a place for them/bought some kind of storage.

londonrach · 12/06/2014 22:09

Kitchen and bathroom cleaned daily and smells good. Rest weekly unless I drop something that needs vac chumming etc. at moment flat has containers full of engine oil, braid pads, and other car bits so given up tidy bit. Normally a lot better than at moment. (Ignores the two bikes that appeared in the lounge since that oil machine -classic car- took up the whole of the garage 3 weeks ago...)

RobinSparkles · 12/06/2014 22:11

Spotless!

It usually is tbh but I'm making the most of it before I start childminding again. Then it will be chaos :o.

TheNumberfaker · 12/06/2014 22:13

A bombsite. Kitchen was fairly clean before dinner. We are a messy, disorganised household.

hmc · 12/06/2014 22:13

I have a thing about kitchens and bathrooms so they are clean to a high standard - it's a hygiene / preserving good health thing. Everywhere else is mildly messy and quite dusty, plus could use a hoover.

Am happy with that though - I don't understand people who slavishly pursue an immaculate home. I want to liberate them from their burden and reassure them that they don't need to go to those lengths

Itisafact · 12/06/2014 22:14

viv a bigger house has definitely made me and dh tidier, it's still only a little house but had good storage so there's less crap lying around.

imogen that makes sense, I had images of a gleaming house around piles of stuff.

StrumpersPlunkett · 12/06/2014 22:18

it totally depends which room you are in.
Kitchen - v. clean mostly tidy
dining room - clean and tidy
sitting room - clean and moderately tidy
study - an episode from hoarders anonymous
downstairs loo -v clean and tidy

upstairs
Bathrooms - clean and tidy
2 Bedrooms clean and tidy
others a little like episode from hoarders anonymous

garage
full of things waiting to be taken to the tip/charity shops.

Notso · 12/06/2014 22:19

My house is rarely show home tidy and I wouldn't want it to be either.
I go through phases of tidiness, this is a bad week. I am feeling ill, DS2 has been difficult all week and we have had a busy week.
My Mum did the scan and sneer when she popped in on Tuesday Hmm
Before half term I was doing well everywhere was tidy and clean and I was on top of the laundry.
I wasn't getting to sit down until 10:00 at night though. I find I feel I can't do things as my routine will slip, I miss toddlers or turn down a coffee with friends. That obviously can't last and it only takes a couple of days before things descend In to chaos.

Bankholidaybaby · 12/06/2014 22:20

I tidy the kitchen and clean spills every day, but the whole place is only cleaned once a week. It's not particularly tidy or well-organised, but it's tidy and organised for me as I'm a messy person but have a baby now and am making a huge effort.

Itisafact · 12/06/2014 22:20

hmc that's one of the reasons I started the thread, I seem to be constantly cleaning, there is only 2 of us plus pets so it can't need this level of cleaning, I just don't know what a normal house should look like?

God that sounds stupid and it's not a tell me how clean my house is thread I've just spent 2 hours cleaning yesterday and again today and I'm thinking how do people with dc's do this!?

OP posts:
Harriebabe · 12/06/2014 22:21

Same thing happened to me Reggie and now I can't get it out of my head! Grin

kalidanger · 12/06/2014 22:22

Mine is consciously grubby ;) It's often tidy, sometimes a tip, mostly hygienic but there's some bits that I can't make spotless (terrible paint jobs on skirting etc) and I don't ever eat off my floors. I do loo and hoover weekly-ish. It's the right side of acceptable.

Artandco · 12/06/2014 22:27

It - I guarantee it's clutter more than mess. Get rid of any excess and it will be easier to clean. That included too much cutlery, clothes etc

kalidanger · 12/06/2014 22:27

Itisafact What are you cleaning every day for hours? If it's the kitchen then I assume your household cooks a lot? Or if not, one of you doesn't clean? Hmm Or maybe you're dusting too much? Weekly is too much imo.
