To think that when the lead item is about a passport backlog we've run out of real news?

It's a hardy perennial. Everyone suddenly realises their passport is about to run out two weeks before heading off to Majorca, sends off a form and then moans that they don't get it back by return of post. There's nothing else going on is there?

There is a passport backlog story every summer without fail. You'd think people would get a bit organised and sort their passports out more than 3 minutes before travelling FFS.

Fluffyears · 12/06/2014 08:37

Some people have been waiting since the start of May, hardly 3 minutes! Easy to judge when your holiday isn't hanging in the balance, so glad mine runs out next year and I can renew in January when it's quieter.

Mrsjayy · 12/06/2014 08:39

Its bloody rolling news on BBC breakfast you are going on holiday check your passport its not hard, people sre fooled with oh it only takes a few weeks

JennyOnTheBlocks · 12/06/2014 08:45

I think it's the complete opposite, Cog

What news are they burying Hmm

ApocalypseNowt · 12/06/2014 08:48

We've been waiting almost 6 weeks now. Luckily we decided not to book until we'd got it so now i'm hoping it turns up and we can get a late deal.

We couldn't really have sent the forms off much earlier as it's for DD2 (who is 4mo).

ITV rather shot themselves in the foot this morning by interviewing a family bemoaning their fate at missing their holiday to Portugal next week. Centre shot was of a small girl in school uniform. You can just imagine every viewer discounting the passport story and honing in on the fact the family had been about to take a term-time holiday!

Valdeeves · 12/06/2014 23:27

I sent mine off ages ok and it looks like a special family holiday will be ruined. The fact that the government has created an all might cock up that will ruin lots of people's holidays is news for me.
I just wish they'd been upfront about the mess and back log so I could have fast tracked.
Absolutely gutted.
It's not everyone that's been stupid trust me.

I thought it must be a slow-news-day this morning when R4 Today did a whole article about 'Is Russell Watson an opera singer' at around 8.30am this morning. Apparently, he's just a singer. Not an opera singer.

BeCool · 12/06/2014 23:52

I sent off renewals on 20 and 21 may. Got first one back today.
About Three weeks as estimated.

(Still to get 2nd one back though so I shan't say too much)

GoblinLittleOwl · 12/06/2014 23:53

They did actually spend a great deal of time discussing the situation in Iraq, which I think is the most terrifying thing since 9/11; I wouldn't call it a slow news day. Plus the schools fiasco in Birmingham.

NeilNeilOrangePeel · 13/06/2014 00:05

Iraq is very scary indeed - I wonder, are they trying to distract from that by making such a big thing about the passports and Russell Watson ?
