He absolutely loved it there. He was a refugee from Nazi Germany, where he had been tortured in a concentration camp. He was really a broken man, physically and mentally, by the time he got to the US. But he found real peace in the Catskills (he lived in New York, so went there often) and asked to be buried there as the place that had brought him happiness.

When my granny died, many years later, she was buried with him.

It was filmed at Mountain Lake Lodge on Virginia and is still open as a hotel.
They used to run special Dirty Dancing weekends, not sure if they still do
The stone lodge is instantly recognisable as Kellermans!

I've been a few times, it's beautiful. Although sadly no Swayze.

That's because it was set in the cats but actually filmed in mountain lake Virginia the hotel they used in the film is called mountain lake hotel

Mountain Lodge and yes they have the Dirty Dancing weekend next weekend coincidentally - what a hen weekend that would be!

It's booked out practically till next June!

DH and I also looked at Bass Lake where they filmed The Great Outdoors. Also another fabulous looking place.

I was so excited at the thought of a lakeside lodge retreat that I've booked a week in one at Innsbruck for next month.
