to ask when breakfast things are cleaned up in your house

In the Toad household, we all have porridge for breakfast. That leaves a porridge pot, four bowls, cutlery, some porridge on the table and probably a few other things left out like the sugar. There is also crumbs etc from lunch-making. I generally clean this up when I get in from work and start making dinner.

Is this feral?

The teenagers take turns to empty & reload the dishwasher when they get home from school. Woe betide them if the kitchen isn't tidy when I get home from work Grin.

PrincessBabyCat · 10/06/2014 00:26

Someone needs to teach me this ability to do dishes everyday. Blush

Chumhum · 10/06/2014 00:34

I'd never leave the house with the breakfast things still out, it's not hard to ensure the dishwasher is emptied the evening before so the breakfast things go straight in. My dc's have been putting their dishes in there once they've eaten from about age 4. I often have a cooked breakfast and still it only takes a few minutes to clear up.

That way when you get in you're not immediately faced with a chore and the kitchen doesn't smell.

DeanVsSam · 10/06/2014 00:46

My DH washes the dishes after he does the school run.

I'm a SAHM so really should take a turn but I feed them so am happy to leave it for DH. Grin

Couldn't leave them all day if DH didn't do them. I hate prepping for dinner if there's anything still to be washed from a previous meal.

Morloth · 10/06/2014 01:33

All goes straight into the dishwasher which is filled up after dinner and then run each evening.

So effectively the same as you.

butterfliesinmytummy · 10/06/2014 01:57

I don't eat breakfast but dh and the dds put heir dirty dishes in the dishwasher.

fifi669 · 10/06/2014 02:39

You should microwave all the porridge and save washing the pan. A couple of minutes each. May even save time.

sashh · 10/06/2014 05:35

LemonBreeland

I missread that as you being left on the table with dishes.

Er should I be smug or worried I'm ferral because I buy porridge in those pots you can bin?

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 10/06/2014 05:49

We don't do dishes everyday Blush. But there is only me and DD and we only eat cereal or toast I usually just put them in the dishwasher at night or the morning depending when I have time, as we have to leave by 7.50. I eat breakfast on the couch and DD eats it in bed so no need to clean up crumbs.

Tealady1983 · 10/06/2014 06:07

Cleaned up immediately. One thing I cannot stand is washing up laying around! It's my pet peeve to come home from work (on mat leave at mo) and see a sink full of dishes instant bad mood lol

Humansatnav · 10/06/2014 07:05

Depends, dh leaves for work at 5:30, I can leave anytime between 7:45- 9:15 depending on my hours that day, I do them if I have time, if not dh will do them when he gets back ( 12 ish).
On the rare occasions we both have long days/ double shift dd15 will do them when she gets in from school

defineme · 10/06/2014 07:18

A the very least pan and dishes would be left to soak and sugar etc put away and table wiped. If not I would worry the cats would be on the benches to lick the bowls and ants/ mice would be after the sugar/crumbs.
I leave around 815 so plenty of time.

MardyBra · 10/06/2014 07:24

YABU.

This is a "chat" thread.

YouAreCompletelyRight · 10/06/2014 07:40

After I come back from school run if the DH hasn't done it before going to his work

starfishmummy · 10/06/2014 07:52

Depends. If it is a day when I am at work things get put in a bowl of water (so that cereal doesn't dry on) and then gets washed up when I am back. I am last out and first back so this makes sense to me. On my non working weekdays I usually do them early because I don't like trying to do other jobs with piles of stuff in the sink. At weekends it's dh's responsibility (he also cooks at the weekends) so things only get washed when he needs to use them again or on Sunday evening!!

musicalendorphins2 · 10/06/2014 08:32

DH leaves his porridge bowl soaking in cold water and goes to work, when I get up I put it in the dishwasher. (Porridge pot is easy to clean if soaked in cold water rather than hot btw)
Well, not until I have my tea and toast and watch my soap opera.
PS. You know you can make oatmeal in a week batch and just warm it up each day right? It keeps well in the fridge, we only make it once a week, and dh eats it for the entire week.

musicalendorphins2 · 10/06/2014 08:33

*weekly batch, not week

YouAreCompletelyRight · 10/06/2014 08:53

Did DH read this thread? Home from school run and breakfast things cleared plus dishwasher on.

GrannyOnTheSchoolRun · 10/06/2014 09:12

The very least I would be able to do with them is soak them till I got home.

I just think it helps after a hard day to go back to a tidy kitchen rather than an untidy one.

MrsCripps · 10/06/2014 09:19

Dishwasher run and emptied the night before dishes/plates/cups in and then wipe down surfaces.

It gives me the rage if I find crumbs .

shoppingfrenzy · 10/06/2014 09:24

we all put our own breakfast bowls etc in the dishwasher, and wipe around where we've been sitting. So it's all done by the time we've all finished eating.

GrannyOnTheSchoolRun · 10/06/2014 09:46

Its like tidying your desk up at the end of the day - its nice to go back to in the morning.

Same for the kitchen and unmade beds - its great to go home and not have to look at them.

Xcountry · 10/06/2014 09:49

Nah, I do mine when I have time and hot water, sometimes right after, sometimes not. All depends on when I can really.

LillianGish · 10/06/2014 09:56

I always clear up straight after breakfast - I always make beds too (well dc do their own). Hate coming home to a tip - too depressing.

JapaneseMargaret · 10/06/2014 09:59

I couldn't live like that, but not bothered if other people choose to.

Dishwasher emptied, breakfast things out, and sink filled with hot, soapy water. Things tossed in to soak, kitchen wiped down, breakfast things put away in pantry and and fridge, and then everything from the sink into the dishwasher.

And yes, microwave the porridge. Quicker, less faff, so much easier to clean.

Both work full time. Coming home to a kitchen that needs sorting is grim.
