To start a new term at the Chalet School?

1000 replies

Vintagejazz · 06/06/2014 14:23

Happy for this to be moved to Chat if posters agree but thought I'd start it here as this is where we've all been loitering without permission when we should be doing our housework homework.

So welcome to a new term everyone. Cases upstairs to the dormitories, form lists on the notice board. And you'll all be pleased to hear that even though we've moved to a different location, Joey has tracked us - -down moved in next door, so we'll still be seeing too much-- plenty of her Smile

I read somewhere that he couldn't practice during the war years and after (as he was in countries that his qualification didn't recognise or some such excuse) so he became deskilled so retrained as a banker.

Hows your brain fever?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 11/06/2014 13:51

Oh, so he is! Yes, Bruno von Ahlen definitely starts off as a doctor, but you're quite right that he doesn't appear to be one any more by Joey Goes To The Oberland. I've never noticed that before.

alterego2 · 11/06/2014 13:52

Well, I'm in 1940s Wales so I am going to spend my afternoon in the garden weeding the vegetable patch and keeping an eye out for spies, as it is wartime and there are spies everywhere you know - especially at a small, private girls' school.

Vintage you, I think, are in 1960s Switzerland. Which makes communication difficult. I should write a CS/TARDIS crossover piece but, like Sybil, my share of the brains went to my sister, so I shall go and embroider an afternoon tea cloth and some napkins when I've finished weeding.

SilverShadows · 11/06/2014 13:54

I love you lot.

Right, I have the following (in various kindle/word/epub formats)......

  5. (The) Rivals of the Chalet School
  6. Eustacia Goes to the Chalet School
  7. The Chalet School and Jo
  8. The Chalet Girls in Camp
  9. The Exploits of the Chalet Girls
10. The Chalet School and the Lintons
  1. The New House at the Chalet School
  2. Jo Returns to the Chalet School

21a. The Mystery at the Chalet School

  1. The Chalet School and Rosalie

  2. The Wrong Chalet School

  3. Shocks for the Chalet School

  4. The Chalet School in the Oberland

  5. Bride Leads the Chalet School

  6. Changes for the Chalet School

  7. Joey Goes to the Oberland

  8. The Chalet School and Barbara

  9. The Chalet School Does It Again

  10. A Chalet Girl from Kenya

  11. The New Mistress at the Chalet School

  12. Theodora and the Chalet School

  13. Ruey Richardson at the Chalet School

  14. The Feud in the Chalet School

  20. Two Sams at the Chalet School

  21. Prefects of the Chalet School

Can anyone fill in my gaps?

Also, is it worth setting up a dropbox that can be shared and then we could have a folder for each of the different formats?

SilverShadows · 11/06/2014 13:55

Oh, my book numbers are different to pontefractals

JuniperTisane · 11/06/2014 13:58

I really like the name Frieda. And Gisela too. I chose Gisela as my name in German lessons at school, although I had always read it as Gis-ehla and my German, German teacher pronounced it Gis-ula so I guess thats another correction there.

What can my hobby be? I am notoriously cack-handed at all craft and I really hate collecting postcards.

DeWee · 11/06/2014 13:58

Can I join the locker room skivers during the ramble?

I expect the book numbers are different because one of you used the paperback ones, and one used the hardback.

I will make some dolls clothes for the dolls house. After knitting minute lace myself first of course.

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 14:02

You're very welcome DeWee
Alterego I think I must have the gift of time travel as yesterday afternoon I was digging for victory with fellow naughty fourth former Biddy O'Ryan, and today she is my history teacher and about to be married (but she hasn't lost that creamy brogue you will be pleased to hear).

Oh and my brain fever is fine Wabbity. Matron gave me some warm milk and Joey sang' Did You Not See My Lady Come Down the Garden Singing' in her sweet voice.

LeapingOverTheWall · 11/06/2014 14:10

I have the numbering as per the original transcripts website which has the same numbering as pontefractals list - the issue seems to be where Armada split titles into two paperbacks (Lintons/Rebel; New/United; Genius/Fete) and then again when EBDs compilation books then become separate titles (so Mystery, Tom and Rosalie). We should perhaps stick to the numbering GGB will be using which is the original hardback numbering?

Although is some kind techy soul can sort out a dropbox thingy, then we can do our own numbering Smile

Wabbitty · 11/06/2014 14:10

Am very much relieved Vintagejazz

How is Wanda pronounced anyone?

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 14:17

I always pronounce it Won-da but it's probably meant to be Van-da or Von-da.

OP posts:
RueDeWakening · 11/06/2014 14:18

I have Visitors for the Chalet School, which is a fill in between Princess and Head Girl.
Also, the transcript of Lintons I have is uncut/abridged so combines Lintons and Rebel, does yours? (IE you're not missing #11)
I have The New Chalet School too (follows Jo Returns I think) if you want that?

Other than that, I have the same ones as you - am also looking to fill gaps :o

RueDeWakening · 11/06/2014 14:18

(Sorry, that was to SilverShadows!)

Stokey · 11/06/2014 14:26

I would say Wand-a too

Thinking of bunking off this afternoon and reading The School at the Chalet in the garden, hope no-one notices I'm missing Abendessen.

So Old things what are you favourite books?

A few people have mentioned Exile and that was definitely my favourite as a child, quite a bit of action and Jo getting married.

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 14:32

I'm dying to re-read Three Go to the Chalet School but it's very expensive on Abe Books and Amazon. Of the ones I've re-read to date The Chalet School Goes To It stands out. I love the sense of rural Wales at the start of the war and the girls earnestly planting vegetables and getting into trouble because someone has been shining a torch after blackout. And Joey is a mother but not an annoying 'look how many kids I have na na na-na' one,

OP posts:
RueDeWakening · 11/06/2014 14:34

I've just set up a OneDrive account (with its own identity - ChaletSchoolTranscripts) and uploaded copies of the epub versions that I have.

If anyone wants access, shout and I'll send you the details.

Wabbitty · 11/06/2014 14:36

The New Chalet School is one of my least favourites. I just find it very very harsh that the Princess dies without being able to say goodbye to the twins. I know the twins were behaving badly and that Maria needed the shock but it was just so final and irreversible. Couldn't EBD have written it that they got back just in time and they said their goodbyes and then she died and Maria was so shocked at the realisation that she might have missed that final moment with her mum that she turned over a new leaf?

Hakluyt · 11/06/2014 14:37

Rud- could I upload the ones I've got to it too?

Stokey · 11/06/2014 14:38

Have PM'ed you RueDe

SilverShadows · 11/06/2014 14:40

RueDeWakening You are right - I'm not missing rebels after all, assuming that rebels ends when Thelka is expelled?

Yes please to New Chalet School. Will PM now

SilverShadows · 11/06/2014 14:41

Wabbitty WFT? The Princess dies? Veta do you mean?

How did I not know this, and why am I so upset?

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 14:48

It's alright SilverShadows It's an Italian princess who was seriously ill in the San and who's badly behaved twins were driving the staff and pupils at the school demented.

Now, have some warm milk.

RueDeWakening · 11/06/2014 14:59

I'm so glad DH is doing the school run just now, I have visions of everyone frothing while I don't reply for an hour or so :o

Anyhoo, I think I've pm'd everyone who's been in touch so far!

Wabbitty · 11/06/2014 15:01
