To start a new term at the Chalet School?

Vintagejazz · 06/06/2014 14:23

Happy for this to be moved to Chat if posters agree but thought I'd start it here as this is where we've all been loitering without permission when we should be doing our housework homework.

So welcome to a new term everyone. Cases upstairs to the dormitories, form lists on the notice board. And you'll all be pleased to hear that even though we've moved to a different location, Joey has tracked us - -down moved in next door, so we'll still be seeing too much-- plenty of her Smile

We don't just need a topic. We need a huge headline with a subset of smaller topics:
Names
Fanfic
Characters
Transcripts
Food/drink
Expeditions

I'm sure we could think of more Grin

DeWee · 11/06/2014 12:29

ppplease We're talking about the Chalet School books (written 1920s-1960s) it's not real... yes, I know everyone, but I did have to break the news carefully to a tearful dd2 who asked if I could write for a prospectus. Sad

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 12:33

Do you know, when I'm watching telly now I find myself thinking 'oh that actress would be just right to play Joey/Madge/Miss Annersley etc if they dramatized the Chalet School books'.
Does anyone else do this or am I officially the saddest person on this thread.?

ppplease We're talking about the Chalet School books (written 1920s-1960s) it's not real.

But I am Joey! I am a delicate frail one woman earth populator and I received my eddimication at The Chalet School. Apart from my linguistic abilities which naturally I was speaking multiple languages right from birth. Shock How can this be if it's not real?

Did I imagine the rambles, the special milk, the herdsmen, the new gels becoming proper Chalet School girls, matron, cold baths and naughty middles?

alterego2 · 11/06/2014 12:46

Hello, my lambs. I need your help. I'm reading Highland Twins - who on earth is Jean Mackenzie? At first I thought it was a mistake and it meant Mrs John Mackenzie (aka Con Stewart) but, no, this lady is married to a man called Ken.

I'm feeling all crumpled up in my mind and my toes are turning in. Please straighten me out …

thebodylovesspring · 11/06/2014 12:47

corrie thanks I will now pronounce it correctly as I read. Grin wasn't Grizel stone heroine I think Dr Shepherd tells her and Len that's what it means in Reunion.

Pppplease if I could have sent my dds there I would. I would love them to marry doctors and wear their hair in bunches rather than the big hair/fake tan/arse skimming skirts they favour at the moment and lads who are part time pot washes. Grin

vintage I totally agree I do just that too.

Shush, everyone! It's time for afternoon rest now. We have to rest for half an hour, or we'll contract unknown and terrible diseases that can't be cured by prayer, song, or gallons and gallons of creamy milk.

Everyone go to hall with your deckchairs and your improving books. I'm looking forward to a relaxing meander through "Foxe's Christian Martyrs" (didn't Joey receive that for an Xmas present in Tyrol? Cheerful stuff...)

SelectAUserName · 11/06/2014 13:05

I wondered if Jean Mackenzie was supposed to be an old friend of Joey's from Taverton days? I am 100% making that up though; it does read as though we are supposed to "know" her but there are no Jeans of the right generation who ring bells.

EElizavetaofBelsornia · 11/06/2014 13:17

I shall use my afternoon to produce another large pile of exquisitely embroidered undergarments for the Sale, like all Continental girls I am an excellent needlewoman. I will edge them with handsomely worked pillow lace, which I am expert at making. Who knows what result one's womanly skills and strikingly lovely looks may have?

Hakluyt · 11/06/2014 13:21

And I will make scrap books for the Poor Children. I am British, so can't sew for toffee.

Hakluyt · 11/06/2014 13:22

Actually, no, I'm English, aren't I? I bet Scots girls can sew.

fairnotfair · 11/06/2014 13:28

I'm gluing shells to the back of a mirror; I'm told it will make a super prize for the raffle! Apparently small pornographic sketches aren't considered appropriate for a CS Sale. I suggested a Kama Sutra theme, but they went with the sodding Willow Pattern again

Stokey · 11/06/2014 13:31

Hope you're all have a topping afternoon and enjoying the smashing sunshine

Inspired by this thread, I was hunting in boxes of books in the garage at 10.30 last night to see which ones I had left. Unfortunatley I seem to recall a conversation with DM about 15 years ago about throwing away my old books as she was moving to Australia. At the time I was very blase about the whole thing, now not so much!

Bless her, she did keep a few early Chalet school ones - so have started reading from the start, but nothing from the later days. I was wondering about the name Grizel too - don't think it will be making a come back any time soon.

And Evadne? Have never heard that anywhere else. I do have an Aunty Margot though so was alright for that.

NotCitrus · 11/06/2014 13:31

I always assumed Mrs Mackenzie was Con Stewart even if Mr changed from John to Ken - typical names going all colleywest with EBD...

Around 1986 they read Princess in installments on Radio 4 and Elisaveta was "eh-lissa-vetta", and was given the most annoying high squeaky voice, so I gave up trying to listen.

DeWee · 11/06/2014 13:31

Afternoon's rest is UP NOW! Go and put your chairs away and don't trap the pree's fingers in them. Now what does happen after the rest?

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 13:33

I'm making tiny lace curtains and cushion covers for the dolls' house and also a teeny tiny doormat and tea cosy. I like to make the best use possible of my time.

OP posts:
Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 13:35

I think after rest we have games and a healthy walk (or in my case a hideout in the locker room with a romantic novel and some sweets).

OP posts:
NotCitrus · 11/06/2014 13:35

Ramble! It'll be so much fun going in one of two directions that exist on this giant mountain ledge!
In tunics, because trousers are too difficult to figure out how to walk in, even more than unaccustomed long skirts, until about 2 years later when they all wear dungarees and trousers for gardening.

Wabbitty · 11/06/2014 13:37

I always read it as E vad knee.

Not decided on my name yet.

I will be sewing dolls with wardrobes of clothes for the sale. They always go down well with the babes so Auntie Joey says.

Who will be knitting twin sets and who will be making the dolls house now Tom has left? Auntie Joey has a great idea for a competition! (she overheard something Felicity said and is now passing it off as her own idea)

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 13:38

Can we call in to see Madame and Joey, because we really don't get to see enough of them, do we?

OP posts:
Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 13:39

Oh dear, I'm losing track. Which decade, and indeed country, are we in?

OP posts:
SelectAUserName · 11/06/2014 13:43

I wondered whether Jean MacKenzie was supposed to be "Charlie", but isn't there a bit where she talks about going to school in Paris?

SelectAUserName · 11/06/2014 13:44

Vintage All of them, as and when we fancy.

Wabbitty · 11/06/2014 13:44

Calls for Matey, Vintagejazz needs a dose of something. Did you go out without your big shadey hat or parasol? Maybe you are coming down with a touch of brain fever fetches scissors so Matey can chop all your hair off

Vintagejazz · 11/06/2014 13:46

Talking of inconsistencies, in The Chalet School Goes To It, Frieda is married to a Dr Von Ahlen; but twelve or so years later in The Chalet School and Barbara she tells Barbara that her husband is a banker. Did she get married twice or did EBD make a mistake?
