To start a new term at the Chalet School?

1000 replies

Vintagejazz · 06/06/2014 14:23

Happy for this to be moved to Chat if posters agree but thought I'd start it here as this is where we've all been loitering without permission when we should be doing our housework homework.

So welcome to a new term everyone. Cases upstairs to the dormitories, form lists on the notice board. And you'll all be pleased to hear that even though we've moved to a different location, Joey has tracked us - -down moved in next door, so we'll still be seeing too much-- plenty of her Smile

Brilliant, thanks Toni. PM sent :)

Don't fall into any smooth-sided pits on your Guide ramble Wink

Toospotty · 10/06/2014 19:31

Hmmm. The Exile fanfic has outraged me by having the steamer connect with the train in Spartz, when any fule no it is Seespitz. How can I, as a pedant, invest in this story? Will the Nazi will the war?

Toospotty · 10/06/2014 19:32

Obviously that post contains the obligatory typo for anyone self-identifying as a pedant.

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 19:40
Grin

I confess I hadn't noticed that Blush but I am an inveterate skim-reader.

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 19:41

The Spartz/Seespitz error I mean, not your typo. I spotted that alright!

KatieKaye · 10/06/2014 19:44

Many of the early and mid series books cover a whole year. Later books cover only a term or two, or are holiday books, which partly explains why the series falls out of time, if that makes sense!

I always found Len deadly dull and dutiful. And as for getting engaged to Reg (possibly the worst name for a hero ever) before shed even kissed him.... The ultimate in anti-romance. I just hope she found a new life when she went to uni. And dumped Reg.

pontefractals · 10/06/2014 19:48

Ooooh, ToniWol, any chance I could have those transcripts, too? I've got some that NewYearDifferentName sent me a month or so ago, but those aren't amongst them. I'll do a list of what I've got in a bit (I don't think she'd have a problem with me passing any of them on) but I'm currently waiting for my tea to go ping Anna to call me for Abendessen.

JoeyMaynardsghost · 10/06/2014 20:29

Toniwol would you be willing to let me have some of those transcripts please? I've got a bed jacket and won't read them lying down, MaryLou will see to that.

Anothernameagainforthis · 10/06/2014 20:52

Oh, I quite liked Len... Which made no sense, given the third of Joey she was supposed to embody was the third of Joey I find most annoying. I think I had a bit of responsible-big-sister sympathy. I didn't like her getting engaged to creepy Reg though - I would have had her as a spinsterish "proper" teacher, you know, not one of those young flibbertigibbet ones who only teaches til they marry a doctor. I just don't think she'd enjoy 'fun' at uni, even if it makes for a better book. This is why Margot should have been sent off to uni, rather than being straitjacketed into a nunnery. (I know, I know, she technically doesn't actually join the nunnery, but she states her intention to and bookend incidents notwithstanding, she'll be all Chalet Girl honour and being as good as her word.)

Hakluyt · 10/06/2014 20:59

Has anyone got a transcript of Goes to It that they could send me? I have lots to swap!

Does anyone know why there are transcripts? Who did them and why?

grayling57 · 10/06/2014 21:11

I think a long while ago there was a group with an email account that you could log into and download transcripts (I remember getting some of the La Rochelle books from there). This was about eight or ten years back, and I imagine people transcribed them because the books were out of print and unobtainable, especially in uncut form. Don't know if it still exists but had the vague idea it closed down once Girls Gone By started publishing them again. (I only found out about GGBP after several of the ones I wanted most were out of stock again so transcripts were great, but am gradually building my collection from them as new ones get published.)

LeapingOverTheWall · 10/06/2014 21:20

grayling's got it - I got a load of transcripts before the site was asked by GGB to pull them, but annoyingly I didn't get them all, just the ones I hadn't read Sad. Most of the later ones on pontefractals list are from the original site, which had been transcribed by various people over the years into word documents, and between us we've turned into ebooks.

It was a passworded site - from memory you needed to know Joey's childhood nickname, and something about Madge as well.

EEasterChick · 10/06/2014 21:21

I've got Exploits Pontefractal, give me a pm. Toniwol I pmed you, if you have any not on that list we will all be your bosom buddies for life, and name our DDs after you whether you like it or not!

LeapingOverTheWall · 10/06/2014 21:23

just googled and found a list of links to lots of CS stuff (the original trasncripts were on one of these), but there seems to be quizzes, and various discussions lnked.

Anothernameagainforthis · 10/06/2014 21:42

I would love the transcript of Goes To It, please please please.

I am lying in bed reading The New Chalet School, on my iPad in the dark because my toddler is sleeping in the same room... Needless to say I am also not wearing my bed jacket. My eyes will be falling out. Someone please fix me with some milk!

VikingLady · 10/06/2014 21:43

pontefractals are you offering to email them to desperate souls in need of a few they have never even read ? I would love you forever! (In a non-soppy way, obviously. That kind of thing is Not Done at the CS).

lazurda · 10/06/2014 22:09

Someone earlier was asking how to pronounce Elizaveta. I would like to ask how you all pronounce "Vi" Lucy. I always think of it as rhyming with "eye", but if her name was Viola, she of the violet eyes and bronzy curls, wouldn't Vi rhyme with "me"? I know, I need to get some kind of life organised for myself sometime soon...

JuniperTisane · 10/06/2014 22:11

If pontefractals list is unabridged I would love to get hold of them Blush I could send you chocolate in return?

pontefractals · 10/06/2014 22:13

Hello

Thank you EEasterChick, have PMd you Smile

Anothernameagainforthis and VikingLady, yup, PM me addresses and I'll send them. (There are some in there that I haven't read yet, either, s'wonderful...)

pontefractals · 10/06/2014 22:14

Likewise JuniperTisane.

Feeling somewhat fraudulent, it's not like I've done any hard work in transcribing or even getting hold of them after all. Am relieved to know it's not just me that's this sad keen.

RueDeWakening · 10/06/2014 22:15

I've got Exploits, someone on here emailed it to me a week or two ago. PM if you want it :)

pontefractals · 10/06/2014 22:17

Ooh, nooo, Vi was one of the names I didn't previously have a problem with, but now you mention it... Somewhat complicated by the fact that I'm pretty sure at the time I first read them I would've pronounced Viola v-eye-ola Blush. I definitely pronounced Sadie (in Malory Towers?) "Sad-eye".

The CS name that I always mentally skipped over, and tbh still do, is Ilonka.

ToniWol · 10/06/2014 22:18

Hakluyt - I have Goes to It. If you message me I'll send tomorrow when I'm on the laptop. They're all in word or PDF format, but I don't have Camp (the first one I read!) so may ask that of you, Pontefractals.

Will try to do a list of what I have Thursday (tomorrow's Brownies!)

On Vi Lucy's name - I've always pronounced it in my head as Veye-oh-la (same as I pronounce the instrument) so the shortening always made sense.

RueDeWakening · 10/06/2014 22:21

Has anyone got any transcripts of the La Rochelle books they'd be willing to share, by the way? I've never even seen one 2nd hand to pick up, but would love to read them :o
