Aibu to think if you are a police officer you wouldn't allow your grandson to go home alone.

Because if she didn't he wouldn't have been taken and doyched in petrol.

Even if you're a police officer you have to learn to let your kids have a bit of freedom.

But a primary school kid, with a known killer as a father on the loose???

Nah.Grin

Bloody good series though & I like the fact she got her own back, totally unprofessionally, to give the evil git a going over.

Panzee · 03/06/2014 22:14

That was Ace. :o

ICanSeeTheSun · 03/06/2014 22:15

I loved the part where she give him a good kicking.

OP posts:
chocfemme · 03/06/2014 22:16

I thought it was a bit daft to let him come home from school alone and not have to be home until 5pm when his crazy, murdering Dad was still on the loose!

stardusty5 · 03/06/2014 22:19

YANBU, given that Tommy had visited the school before as well, I thought it was a bit of a stretch. The school was obviously far enough away from their home to justify a car ride sometimes. AND he was allowed to roam until 5pm without checking in... I still had to be back from school by 5pm at age 16!

That's not to say that I haven't THOROUGHLY enjoyed this series however. Brilliant story and and actors. I will watch anything with Sarah Lancashire in it.

StarGazeyPond · 03/06/2014 22:26

But he wasn't supposed to be on his own, was he? He was supposed to be with his friend at all times.

restandpeace · 03/06/2014 22:27

Remember there are more good people in the wirld than bad... However with that scumbag on the loose different tale

restandpeace · 03/06/2014 22:27

I agree op the kicking was the dogs

crazydashboard · 03/06/2014 22:30

Brill series, I also love Sarah L, great stuff.
Kicking was immense

MissMarplesBloomers · 03/06/2014 22:34

Loving the fact we (normally non violent types I would vouch) all enjoyed watching him get his just desserts!

MrsRuffdiamond · 03/06/2014 22:36

It was a fantastic series, and a very satisfying ending!

Although I couldn't get my head round the fact that she could ever have said what she apparently did to her son, even in extremis.

ICanSeeTheSun · 03/06/2014 22:42

I did find what she said to her son after the death of her daughter strange, but I suppose grieve makes people react totally different.

Loved it! Loved watching him getting a good smacking. I also thought no one in real life would have allowed him to come home by himself at that age/in those circumstance. Mad!

MissMarplesBloomers · 03/06/2014 23:03

Mrs Ruff - I agree that was the one line that jarred in the whole thing, mums do & say al sorts in grief but not that harsh to another child I would have thought, but who knows how it would take us in such a scenario.

maras2 · 03/06/2014 23:14

Loved it.Lots of BAFTA's coming up possibly.

mamababa · 03/06/2014 23:21

Hope there is a another series -fab!!!!

Waltonswatcher1 · 03/06/2014 23:35

I don't watch telly but was dragged into happy valley by a mate . I can't get over how much I loved it - the layers of subtle emotional drama .
It was like a good book . A rare thing in tv land -or perhaps need to tune in again .
It was horrifying and disturbing . My siblings were lost to drugs for too many years - with children involved.
The effects on the extended family are never dealt with usually .
Op YABU for questioning the story line because it may have a few holes, but I am happy to gloss over them . SL was outrageously good too - as was her sister . Oh and Kevin was wow , the wifey was dithery and totally believable . And Tommy's side kick - he was cracking - who wasn't willing him to hatch an escape plan .
Loved it .

merrydebs · 03/06/2014 23:44

fab series! Just thinking though, who actually did shoot the farmer bloke?

scater · 03/06/2014 23:49

The farmer bloke shooting was to do with the coke dealing as he made a deal to give info on the top bosses for reduced sentence in relation to the kidnapping.

'Twas brilliant series.

ICanSeeTheSun · 03/06/2014 23:49

It was a drug gang

Redglitter · 03/06/2014 23:53

There were lots of holes in parts of it. If she was a real police officer she wouldn't be around for a second series shed have been fired or tied to an office job. But TV drama has to have a bit of flexibility lol

very underrated series, loads better than Broad church. So glad it's got a second series

ICanSeeTheSun · 04/06/2014 00:00

Apparently discussion are taking place for a second series.

Hope there is a Christmas special where Tommy is in court.

Clever, clever writing by Sally Wainwright. When I saw the canal boat, i told DH it was bound to go up in flames. It's one of those things with thrillers, if there's a canal boat there's going to be a shot where it explodes. And she totally turned the cliche round on its head.

It could easily go to a new series, they potentially have some ends to tie up with Tommy, Kevin, and the whole drugs issue.
