to think the whole office shouldn't have to suffer freezing ac because one preg woman is hot

brt100 · 30/05/2014 18:54

There is one woman in the office who keeps closing all the windows and turns the ac on.

Its really pleasent with the windows open, but with the ac on I need to have a jacket at my desk and get really cold as I'm next to the unit.

The prey woman was still wearing her cardie, and isn't sat near the vents.
Most other people have a jumper on but its kind of like no one is mentioning the ac problem as it involves a preg woman.

Aibu to ask her to get a small fan for her desk or something?

After all its crazy on a cold day anyway to close the windows and waste electricity to make the office cold!

Air Con is the work f the devil!!!

I absolutely hate it!!

Be it in the office or in the car - I just hate it!
It makes everywhere absolutely bloody freezing!!!

In my office there are about 10 of us and 8 of them love the Air Con and so always want it on! I sit there with my coat on Hmm

I personally think they should stop being so selfish and buy a bloody fan!
Even the pregnant people!!

YADNBU!!

APlaceInTheWinter · 30/05/2014 18:58

YABU to get her a small fan for her desk. Does anyone else have a problem with it? In a busy office, the majority rule wins so if you're the only one struggling then (as MN would say) you have to suck it up.

tbh it's easier to cope with being cold as you can always add layers.
However, If you're too warm then ultimately you can't strip off in work.

qazxc · 30/05/2014 18:59

I'm heavily pregnant and am constantly hot. But in the situation you describe my first action would be to take off my cardi!

brt100 · 30/05/2014 19:00

I would think most people have a problem with it but don't vocalise it! I mean ac on and most people with jumpers on is not right.

My fingers get freezing, might need to get gloves

Can you swap desks with her?

theywillgrowup · 30/05/2014 19:02

dont get her a fan,let her get one herself, thats if the office vote in your favour

YANBU as soon as some women get pregnant they feel their rights trump everybody elses

brt100 · 30/05/2014 19:02

Yes winter its the work of the devil, its just so abrupt and nocks my body out of sync!

OP posts:
foslady · 30/05/2014 19:03

Could you swap desks until she goes on maternity leave?

brt100 · 30/05/2014 19:05

Suggested swapping desks, but she says she likes hers..

I love AC and have my house set at 18c at all times. My biggest motivation for getting a management position was to have my own office and be able to refrigerate myself without anyone else moaning. It is in the mid 40s at the moment but I have fleecy pjs and a dressing gown on inside. In a shared area of course you have to compromise although I can't think of anything worse than a sweaty airless room filled with people. So although I feel for her if course she is unreasonable.

samithesausage · 30/05/2014 19:15

Yanbu.
I remember getting very cross over aircon when in the office. One woman wanted to sit by the window, have the window open so she could have fresh air and have the aircon on as low as it could go because it was hot. The aircon was pumping out cold air on the back of my neck 8 hours a day. The unit couldn't regulate itself because of the open window and the area by my desk frequently went below 17-18 degrees! (I could of built bloody snowman on my desk!) I snapped and threatened the shops and factories act. Then I kept hiding the remote in visible but hidden places!

brt100 · 30/05/2014 19:17

But theo the room has less fresh air and is more stuffy when the ac is on as all the windows are closed

OP posts:
Theodorous · 30/05/2014 19:19

Not for me. I am not saying I am in anyway normal but after so many years of centralised house system and hot climate, I feel claustrophobic without it. We only open a window when too cold.

Theodorous · 30/05/2014 19:21

Many people have tried the remote hiding trick with me over the years as well. I have 4 in my desk drawer just in case! But I do to share with anyone but the cleaner puts it to 22 every morning.

Minesril · 30/05/2014 19:21

I hate air con.

I'm pregnant right now and I still hate air con.

I shared an office once with a menopausal old bat who insisted on air con. Would have it going full blast in November while I was sitting in my coat trying not to cry.

Topseyt · 30/05/2014 19:28

I remember working in air-conditioned offices and it was always too cold.

If it was a baking hot summer's day outside (the type where you wilt in the heat) you would still need to put on a jacket to go inside. It was set far too cold and sharp.

It can be hard to get aircon just right. Tell her to take her cardigan off.

brt100 · 30/05/2014 19:52

I really don't want to enter office politics as only second week at the job.

The ac has chilled me to the bone, can't afford it but put the heating on now to warm up!

CottonbudCatastrophe · 30/05/2014 19:57

YANBU. I struggled a lot with being too hot while I was pg but I would never have dreamt of asking for the temperature to be turned down. I got a desk fan, light clothing & a water spray & drank lots of water. Other people have to work there too!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 30/05/2014 20:42

Thwre are many reasons I don't work indoors. Thanks for giving me another one.

BumpNGrind · 31/05/2014 00:24

Has she asked anyone if she can put the AC on? Has anyone given their objections? Has anyone said 'do you mind if I turn this off! I'm feeling a bit cold?'. If she has refused to turn the AC off when everyone else is freezing that's unreasonable, but if nobody voices their objection you can't expect your colleague to know what temperature you feel comfortable at.

Some people are naturally warm, some naturally cold, also I don't think that you should define her using her pregnancy. IME it doesn't change a lot temperature wise-your colleague may just be a naturally warm person.

FWIW I hate AC so do sympathise with you being cold in the office but I also hate having the windows open as you can hear all the sirens, cars beeping, general noise much clearer and it's really distracting.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 31/05/2014 00:30

I needed it to be cold when I was pregnant with my 1st but i wouldn't have expected everybody else to freeze just because I was overheating. YANBU - get her a fan!

Weirdly, I was normal temperature with my 2nd.

itsbetterthanabox · 31/05/2014 00:35

We don't have air con but I have the same issue with windows. Everyone opens them as wide as possible and it makes the room freezing! It's horrible. In winter I always want the heating on but then they start complaining it's hot which is very silly seeing as it's winter! Yanbu!

Alisvolatpropiis · 31/05/2014 00:44

My pregnant supervisor insists on having windows open and merrily ignores the fact that the rest of the team are suffering during the not exactly warm spell we're having.

But she pregnant so what can we say without sounding mean? Nothing. Cardies until she's on mat leave.

TucsonGirl · 31/05/2014 00:46

Hate AC, and think it should be banned. Open a window if you're warm. AC just spreads disease.

Theodorous · 31/05/2014 15:15

I hope you don't actually live in Tucson in that case!
