To hate the overused MN expression "Are you on glue?"

There's just something really horrible about it....rude and unnecessary.

It also smacks of someone trying to be smart and witty buy just trotting out a line they've been taught.

Equally irritating is "Did you mean to be so rude" because it's so overused and "This too shall pass." is also ANNOYING.

This too shall pass is actually a lovely saying but it's SO overused on here!

Did you mean to be so rude is a great line. Its not supposed to be used as a killer comeback when someone has roared 'You're a fat cow with saggy boobs' in your face

It's for when your snide bitchy MIL/colleague/neighbour has made one of their underhand smart remarks, again. they can either declare open war or they can backtrack, but it's supposed to move the situation on from continous tiresome border skirmishes. if you will.

scottishmummy · 03/06/2014 19:32

Did you mean to be so rude?begs the obvious answer, aye I did

Fideliney · 03/06/2014 19:35

scottish do you really think that quoting the thing your answering is PA? Or did you just say so to me the other day because I was pissing you off with my hippy dippy notions again?

scottishmummy · 03/06/2014 19:42

Don't know what you're on about or how this relates to did you mean to be so rude as a quip
My posts are wholly appropriate given this thread topic
Don't know what the crossed out again refers to.not really interested

Fideliney · 03/06/2014 19:47

Ha! scottish you are a character. Grin

scottishmummy · 03/06/2014 19:49

If you say so

Fideliney · 03/06/2014 19:51

Do people not ask you questions in everyday life?

TheLastThneed · 05/06/2014 05:26

"Bums on seats" when talking about filling a venue.

Ok, so it's not an MN phrase, but it still bugs me beyond belief...

The first two I don't mind. 'This too shall pass' is just plain creepy though

OwlCapone · 05/06/2014 07:07

At times, I wonder why some people are here.

nomorequotes · 05/06/2014 07:52

because they're on glue owl

OwlCapone · 05/06/2014 08:06

Did you mean to be so rude?

Wink
scottishmummy · 06/06/2014 20:28

We are all chewin the fat, being on mn doesn't = love every asinine sweetie, hun comment
Its permissible to not think did you mean to be so rude is witty and searing
And sometimes this too will pass is insufficient, sometimes life is shite and it wont pass

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/06/2014 21:49

But it will. Confused

LadyNexus · 06/06/2014 21:51

When I read 'this too shall pass' it's always read aloud in my head in the gravelly tones of Gandalf...

'THIS TOO SHALL PASS!' (Bangs stick)

MrsWinnibago · 06/06/2014 23:15

LadyNexus for some reason I want to read it out in Miss Jean Brodie's voice! Grin

I was thinking that there is no phrase that really particularly irritates me until I came across my only hated one today and was reminded of how vomit worthy it is:
'littles/littlies' to describe young children.
So twee and mumsy, and I have never heard it outside of MN. 'Little ones,' yes, okay, at a push, but littlies? It's not even a word!

Greythorne · 07/06/2014 00:19

My pet hate is not so much a phrase as a completely predictable response to any thread about expecting parents / grandparents to help.

OP: my mum is a fit 54 year old, took early retirement from a well paid job, so she has no financial worries, lives 10 minutes away from us. AIBU to expect her to occasionally help as my DH has MS and we have newborn twins.

Response 1: you sound entitled.
Response 2: your poor mum.
Response 3: you sound jealous.
Response 4: it's nobody's responsibility but yours to raise your children. Asking your mum to come over for 20 minutes is completely unreasonable. I'm glad you're not my daughter.

ZenNudist · 07/06/2014 00:35

Tried to read thread but got so bored its like bingo for all MN phrases ever with someone coming on to decry them. Don't we have this thread every other week?

Stock phrases help with a sense of community and identity. Fwiw I cba to waste time typing up the longer ones (FOTTFSOFAWYGTFOSM).

ExitPursuedByABear · 07/06/2014 01:39

That's what I said zen

PrincessBabyCat · 07/06/2014 01:47

Greythorne Yes, and God forbid you want any help ever. Everyone must do everything by themselves. There is definitely no "it takes a village" mentality here.

Pocketangel · 07/06/2014 07:21

Can you actually be 'on glue'? Wouldn't that suggest a 'taking of' glue? Just a thought... :)

Picturesinthefirelight · 07/06/2014 15:26

You sniff it, you don't ingest it. (Not that I ever have mind).

OwlCapone · 07/06/2014 16:13

Well, I was certainly "on entinox" when having my three and that's not ingested.
