Changing DD s name

Has anyone ever done this?

Dd is 6 weeks. Her name is nice but unfortunately it's a brand name of something. We decided early on in the pregnancy on this name as a possibility and decided to use it - I think because it "became" our dd we didn't think of the product.

But, other people do and whenever I say DDs name they say "oh like the ..."

WIBU to change it? DH thinks I'm being stupid but I'm worried about the poor child going through life constantly saying "yes, like the ...."

Don't change it unless you actually prefer one of the others. It's the sort of thing people say first time but they soon stop even thinking it. My DNephew shares his name with a famous military leader. The first few times I used it, it brought the soldier to mind, but now the name is completely just DNephew's.

I LOVE the name Flora - but the margarine link meant I'd never have used it.... How about Cora?

I have a Harriet so am biased towards that but Emily and Poppy are great names too.

How about Holly? Sophie?

But this is all down to you- you loved it enough to choose it 6 weeks ago?

Flora definitely makes me think 'margarine'. And margarine is the very worst of food stuffs.

If I try to picture a woman called Flora I imagine an overweight, florid faced farmer's wife in a floral Laura Ashley frock who wins awards for her homemade gooseberry jam and sabotages her rivals attempt to usurp her.

But obviously I wouldn't say any of this aloud to a real life Flora or to their parent of a Flora.

If you think it's going to continue to irritate you maybe change it, if you think you can grow to accept that lots of people will make that association then keep it.

I really think you would regret changing your child's name on the basis of some throw-away (and quite harmless really) comments from random people. This name has been special for you even before your DD was born and you clearly feel a connection with it.

It is such a beautiful name too! Obviously as it's in my user name it is special to me. Flora (and Miles) are characters from an opera I really love.

Keep it!!!!!

I was also going to suggest Fleur or Freya.
But Flora is a lovely name.

FWIW - my nephew had a name for 3 months!
When my sister went to register him, she came back and told us he had a different name!
It took some getting used to but all turned out well in the end.

Kids will always find something to take the p!ss out of.
Whether it's a name, shape, height, weight, clothes, glasses, etc.....

You do what you want and don't be swayed by anyone else.

It's a funny old situation isn't it?! It seems that no matter which name you choose for your Dc at the very same moment someone appears on a soap with that very name or a celebrity names their child the same name! Aaaargh!! I would never associate Flora with the margarine and think people are being idiotic to mention it to you.

However, if it is really bugging you then do change it. I know a couple of people who did this.....noone really thought much about it. Up to you entirely! Congratulations on your new baby girl!

Ignore the rude people. It's lovely.

DinoSnores · 29/05/2014 15:06

Flora is a lovely name. Honestly, the first thing I thought of on seeing her name was Flora Macdonald, a fiesty, independent sort of woman you'd be proud for your daughter to emulate!

It's a lovely name. Anyone who goes on about the link to margarine is just stupid. I know a girl called Catia, and she always gets stupid people going 'CATCH YA! HA HA HA' Hmm You can't win.
