That ukip are making such huge gains in the elections.
If mnetters could temper their hysteria of screaming racism, I think it is a clear indication that the fundamental principals of the party of no toEurope and no to continued mass immigration are very important to a lot of people

Gordy, "In the ring" is the poster's name a few messages up?

gordyslovesheep · 23/05/2014 20:22

haha sorry Grin it's been a long day!

pineapplecrush · 23/05/2014 20:27

Phew, glad we got that sorted!

gordyslovesheep · 23/05/2014 20:29

it's my birthday tomorrow ...I have vodka Grin sorry about the mix up!

The NHS link up there explains it better than me! always worth having insurance and the EHIC x

Justanotherlurker · 23/05/2014 20:30

Disclaimer, definitely not a ukip supporter.

I find it quite ironic that certain posters are using recent policy changes made by the current coalition as evidence against those supporting ukip.

Yet when these policies was introduced these same posters where some of the most feverish against said policies.

Unfortunately like it or not topics will have to be discussed, you cannot whitewash ~30% of voters (as much as I would like to) there has been mis-information spread by all parties and this protest vote is going to expose some harsh truths for all side of the political spectrum

funnyossity · 23/05/2014 20:33

mum2030, I was thinking earlier how Labour are looking more and more like a London party.

TheBogQueen · 23/05/2014 20:33

Re translators on NHS - translators are used for triage on the phone. Sometimes nhs workers get by with pidgin English but if it becomes apparent that the pt is not understanding questions like 'do you have chest pain' or 'is your child sensitive to light' then a translator is needed.

gordyslovesheep · 23/05/2014 20:33

eh? The law on access to benefits is the law on access to benefits - quoting said law to people who are unaware of the facts is part of the debate ...I find your post very odd !

at no point have I personally given opinion ...but people asked for facts - should I ignore those simply because they reflect tory policy or would that be silly?

Using facts doesn't mean you agree with the policy behind them btw - just to be clear!

also UKIP - 17% of the vote nationally :) - labour got 31% though

LongTimeLurking · 23/05/2014 20:36

OP YANBU.
I think whether you like UKIP or not it is probably a good thing that they have had strong results in the elections. The three main parties have merged into one centre ground blob that offers people little to no choice and often doesn't reflect (or even acknowledge) the views of a significant number of people.

UKIP being on the scene will hopefully force the main parties to offer a little more choice and to have an open discussion about difficult issues like immigration and EU membership.

Fcukfifa · 23/05/2014 20:40

Can I just ask people how they know about the racist, sexist, homophobic comments made by ukip members?

I feel like I'm in a political bubble, having read about ukip mainly on here (I'm afraid) I am utterly disgusted. Then when I looked on their website I annoyed myself by thinking what they was saying sounded ok.

How do you know about their dangerous undercurrent? Watching more of the news? Reading the newspapers?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, perhaps I should be asking how to brush up on politics together? I usually just get so angry that the politicians think we believe what they say so end up ignoring it all! (Totally wrong I know)

Justanotherlurker · 23/05/2014 20:44

Ah, ok Gordy I thought you brought access to Jsa to the table, after all that was a collation policy that you obviously supported at the time ......

BornFreeButinChains · 23/05/2014 20:45

Gordy, "In the ring" is the poster's name a few messages up?

We are all in the ring are we not Grin

gordyslovesheep · 23/05/2014 20:47

yes I did bring access to JSA to the table in response to a claim 'they' got it as soon as they got here ...

so a factual correction - I was unaware we had to big up each party behind different policies

still - NHS - go Labour Grin

Justanotherlurker · 23/05/2014 21:01

Fcukfifa

Unfortunately it requires visiting sites where your views are challenged, look at topics that are covered by all media, be aware of echo chamber forums and analyse what you have read.

Justanotherlurker · 23/05/2014 21:04

Ok, we are straw manning now

10/10

And yet it's "them" that's thick.

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2014 21:05

I already know this, you know that people can have permanent leave to remain just by being the mother or similar to someone already here?

I know this was way up thread but it's a myth that needs challenging.

Speaking as an immigrant mother of a British child, that's rubbish. I'm a permanent resident now, but giving birth to my son with my British partner didn't achieve that. Not even marrying my British partner automatically achieved that - we had to jump through numerous hoops, he had to make a good wage (mine didn't count), we had to fulfil all manner of criteria and complete a probationary period.

I think that's right and appropriate, actually. But really, it's no longer easy for non-EU immigrants to come to and stay in the UK, and it hasn't been for quite some years now.

I understand people's concerns about EU immigration but UKIP's 'solutions' are frankly fanciful. 'We'll leave the EU but retain the benefits through free trade agreements just like Norway and Switzerland!' What aren't they telling you? That to get those FTAs, they have to agree to free movement of labour. So nothing would change on the immigration front as a result of leaving the EU.

The only difference is that those countries aren't part of the political union, for good or I'll, don't pay EU subs and don't participate in EU programmes (which numerous areas of the UK, that are often the least well off, benefit from). They therefore don't participate in the joint decision making which is increasingly democratic in the EU, unless you're British and a bloc of your elected representatives can't be bothered to vote or otherwise represent our interests.

Someone remind me which party those expenses scroungers belong to?

gordyslovesheep · 23/05/2014 21:09

Fuckfifa? Grin what has football got to do with it Grin

I don't need edumacating ta I have been politically active and engaged for 30 years - have faces plenty of challenging and have a degree in social policy so kind of get it Grin

I don't mind being challenged at all - I just find it odd we now have to accredit any policy we mention in passing to a specific party Grin

gordyslovesheep · 23/05/2014 21:12

ignore my last post - I need a lie down Grin

anyway off to watch Hinterland - which will be fun - I'll come back when I have sobered up learned to read threads fully

JohnFarleysRuskin · 23/05/2014 21:19

Expenses scroungers were lab and cons, no?

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2014 21:28

John, not in the European Parliament, no. I find it frustrating that there's so little scrutiny and interest of the EP in the UK that we have no idea what our elected representatives are doing, and therefore we are not holding them to account.

UKIP's failure to represent the people who elected them in the parliament to which they were elected is an utter disgrace.

Backinthering · 23/05/2014 21:32

I'm in Scotland. I had made my mind up to vote "no" in the independence referendum but I think after seeing these results I need to reconsider. Perhaps the two nations are indeed too politically different.

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2014 21:36

Back, I can't say I blame you. I fervently hope Scotland stats in the Union because I think we're better than this. I've heard quite a few people say this today.

How ironic if the UKIP 'protest' vote contributes directly to the end of the UK as we know it,

Justanotherlurker · 23/05/2014 21:38

Wow Gordy, a degree in social policy and yet totally disregard today's results by essentially resorting to name calling and using previously enacted policies that you was against initially as evidence.

I guess critical/logical thinking was not your strongest subject.

Still go "whatever colour" team I support, yay!!!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/05/2014 21:43

Backinthe..I am also now swaying towards voting Yes too.
