Strong Facebook comments pro and anti political parties

Iwanttovoteukip · 22/05/2014 14:08

My personal political views mean I want to vote for UKIP. I am also anti the Green party due to the cockup they have made in Brighton. This is my view. I realise that other people have different views but we live in a democracy so we should all vote for who we want.

On Facebook there have been half a dozen people who have been spouting strong views that are very anti UKIP. Lots of smearing a few times a day. The said same people have been actively pro Green over the last few days.

I would never put negative comments on their comments as I don't think it is the correct medium for a political debate. However, I'm feeling 'bullied' (this is perhaps the wrong explanation) by all their rhetoric. Are they being unreasonable?

OP posts:
JohnFarleysRuskin · 22/05/2014 17:10

They're not 'smearing' ukip. Ukip are full of shit.

Springheeled · 22/05/2014 18:09

If your personal political views are pro ukip then you'll have to take the pasting you so rightly deserve. Or just block all your friends who are annoying you, i.e. The ones who aren't racist, sexist, homophobic and thick.

PrincessBabyCat · 22/05/2014 18:19

Yeah, we get that crap on fb in the US during election time too.

I don't believe anyone has ever said "Wow! That was a thought provoking facebook meme! I will vote for the other party now".

I like to rile them up and imply they're unamerican for thinking such things.

GardeningPerchance · 22/05/2014 19:03

Yeah here we go, this thread has brought them all out nicely - 'voting ukip makes you an attrocious cunt....got no evidence for ya, but thought I'd throw in some offensive terms about you so you start seeing my point of view and thinking like you might vote for my side'...nice. Nothing like combatting intolerance and hatred with.....oh, wait.

HesterShaw · 22/05/2014 19:09

You think that thinking that UKIP are atrocious cunts is based on no evidence? Er...ok.

HesterShaw · 22/05/2014 19:11

Yeah here we go, this thread has brought them all out nicely

And your patronising, lofty tone reminds me of people who comment on the Daily Mail, who sneer at those who are concerned about things like climate change

GardeningPerchance · 22/05/2014 19:12

nooo, voters of UKIP are apparently atrocious cunts, but there's nothing in all this to back that up, just general statements like 'they want to do this' or 'they want to do that', and NO links to the actual black and white intention to do that. total conjecture, but conjecture people are completely happy to lay into and block lifelong friends over Hmm

GardeningPerchance · 22/05/2014 19:15

LOL to the idea of me as a daily mail reading global warming denier btw, any more insults you'd like to fling my way? Keep 'em coming, I'm sure every one = a vote for the greens by some lurkers out there...or something? Hmm

CumberCookie · 22/05/2014 19:16

Its a public forum. They are allowed to express their views.

BellBookandCandle · 22/05/2014 19:20

Haha! You'd be defriending me as I've just had a good FB rant about the number of shitty parties ((UKIP included) in my constituency and the fuckwits who vote for them. Anyway who votes UKIP/BNP or of that ilk deserves everything they get!

YABU to think you are being bullied - if you out yourself as a UKIP voter then you might encounter harsh words!

redexpat · 22/05/2014 19:21

So do you think it's ok for a husband to rape his wife then? Because UKIP does. Their MEPs abstained or voted against the legislation in the EU Parliament. Does that represent your views?

GardeningPerchance · 22/05/2014 19:25

I didn't say I vote for UKIP, or greens, my point is that slinging insults around without actually pointing to evidence is NOT going to win anyone over, and bombarding our facebook feeds with spam stuff like that also does no party any favours.

cardibach · 22/05/2014 19:27

UKIPs MEPs policy is to vote no. TO everything. So if the EU had a vote on, say, reducing immigration, or reducing centralisation - which they say they are in favour of - they would still vote no. Or abstain. Or just not be there. But they'd still take the pay. DO you really want that, OP?
Plus the racist, homophobic, misogynist stupid stuff, obviously.

tabulahrasa · 22/05/2014 19:28

"nooo, voters of UKIP are apparently atrocious cunts, but there's nothing in all this to back that up"

Well they either care more about things like the EU and immigration than they do about women and people with disabilities being treated as equal members of society or they have no problem with the idea that women and people with disabilities should have less rights than able bodied men...so um, atrocious cunts isn't a phrase I would have picked, but it seems fairly apt.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 22/05/2014 19:29

What buggerlumps said.

100%

GardeningPerchance · 22/05/2014 19:31

apt? whatever: I believe in free speech and even though I am thoroughly sick of reading all this tripe as mentioned before, I'm not going to go round insulting people and threatening to unfriend them etc etc over it. It's horrible, and I'm stunned anyone would allow any political party to do this to them tbh.

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/05/2014 19:34

I wish the people on my Facebook voting UKIP would make themselves known so I could delete them.

tabulahrasa · 22/05/2014 19:41

"I believe in free speech and even though I am thoroughly sick of reading all this tripe as mentioned before, I'm not going to go round insulting people and threatening to unfriend them etc etc over it. It's horrible, and I'm stunned anyone would allow any political party to do this to them tbh."

I believe in free speech as well, but if people say things that show that they don't care about or are ok with sexism and disablism...I reserve the right to decide that perhaps they're not people I actually want as friends.

Being a woman and having a child with a disability, I'm assuming they possibly don't care that much either, so what's the issue?

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 19:43

Funny, I have friends who live in Brighton who are really quite happy.

ChelsyHandy · 22/05/2014 19:43

YANBU. I'm sick of it too. Nothing wrong with people having opinions but I live in Scotland and I'm sick of the two types of comment that are now becoming prevalent:

(i) Other (perfectly legitimate and legal) political parties are "evil" and wicked and the scum of the earth

(ii) You must be stupid/highly misguided to consider not voting for the same political choice as me.

So, so sick of it. I really do not think any political leader or party is evil personified or unchecked, and last I looked, I'm not stupid and generally better educated and hold down a much better job than the patronising twat implying I'm stupid or misguided for having a differing opinion to them because they are a disappointed middle aged man who hasn't been very successful in life and would like to blame it on others

And why is it considered "acceptable" to support strongly left wing, socialist views, but not right wing? When in recent history, it is left wing systems that have led to the deaths and oppression of millions?

I have a few FB friends who are totally obsessed with politics, or should I say trying to impose their views on others. Examples of today's comments include:

"Ok let's name and shame. Who voted the Tory in"

"They are a bunch of crooks.. All of them!! So no.. You're right, this isn't about just the Tories.. It's about every member of that criminal establishment!! "

"He'll explain it all so you can properly understand..." (on a political party supporter who has posted a blog)

"Bastard robbing Tory thieving cunts"

ProtegeMoi · 22/05/2014 19:44

I've been posting anti UKIP messages, purely because half of the idiots voting for them have got no idea what is actually in there manifesto and have jumped on the immigration bandwagon. Therefore I feel it's only fair to inform them of the other atrocities they are voting for.

However by all means advertise that you are voting UKIP on your Facebook. I am sure your friends would like to know that you're a woman hating racist so they can delete you.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 22/05/2014 19:51

Protege you are so right

GardeningPerchance · 22/05/2014 19:52

tabula - totally acceptable IMO to unfriend people who say racist etc. stuff, I've done it myself. That's a separate thing to what's going on here though: people may indeed like UKIP flagship policies and have no idea of the rest...so point it out (with FACTS/EVIDENCE mind you!!!), but hurling insults at them or their intended party is highly unlikely to change any minds. and a bajillion posts a day about it is just tedious. OK OK, we get it. three of my friends...good god, I get about 12 posts a day come up from all of them with the shit slinging!

DoJo · 22/05/2014 19:52

So you've realised that your 'friends' find your views objectionable and hate everything you have chosen to stand for? I can see how that could be upsetting for you, but instead of feeling bullied, perhaps it's time to examine your beliefs and decide whether you are really compatible with the people you are friends with.
Perhaps they had not realised until now that you support a party which would put an end to maternity leave, support institutional racism and various other policies which many find repellent. If you are happy with your choice, then you can either defend it, or find friends who share your views.

HesterShaw · 22/05/2014 19:52

I have no idea what kind of person you are, Gardening, nor how you vote, nor what paper you read, nor did I insult you. I just said the patronising lofty sounding tone of your post reminded me of something else, that's all.
