to feel cross about the amount of leaflets through our letterbox

Went to go to the hallway to clear the detritus from the last week (it's been busy Blush) and had:

15 fast food menus
22 other flyers
4 catalogues
4 political flyers with my name and address on (and I would dearly love to know which fucker sold my contact details to UKIP and the Tories)

alongside 2 bank statements we should expect.

Poor trees, poor sore-backed leaflet deliverers and poor recycling collectors. What a waste of energy. Why do companies do this?!

OP posts:
Cushioney · 21/05/2014 22:05

They do it because it works

UncrushedParsley · 21/05/2014 22:12

Lots of houses nearish to us, on a road that adjoins the main A road,( so presumably they get a lot of stuff) have notices saying 'No menus, etc'. No idea if it works...

softlysoftly · 21/05/2014 22:13

YANBU we get at least 5 bits a day and oodles of charity bags and they all get binned grrr

listsandbudgets · 21/05/2014 22:20

Nobody sold your details to UKIP and the Tories they'll have taken it from the electoral roll which all candidates are entitled to a copy of (and is anyway a public document)

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 21/05/2014 22:27

Could you put a notice on your door saying no leaflets? Would that work? We get several from Royal Mail. I assume they get paid to deliver them. If enough people refused them and made it no longer viable perhaps it would stop.

MaxPepsi · 22/05/2014 11:44

4 political flyers with my name and address on (and I would dearly love to know which fucker sold my contact details to UKIP and the Tories)

Really? You've not heard of the electoral roll?

And you begrudge a business trying to get more business?

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 11:56

I actually agree with you OP.

we have one small recycling bin for paper and cardboard which gets collected every 2 weeks. The crap that gets posted through my door is enough to fill the bin within a week.

we have the same menu posted at least 3 times a week. and it seems everyday we have a leaflet asking us if we want to sell the house. which is all well and good but we do not own the house we simply rent it.

I'm going to put a sign on my door. its only 11:55 and already i have had three different lots of leaflet/menu/paper crap posted.

just counted and i have

-3 menues
-6 leaflets
-2 chairty bags

  • a free newspaper with another 5 leaflets stuffed inside
  • a magazine about windows and doors Hmm
MrsTaraPlumbing · 22/05/2014 11:57

Sometimes I go door-to-door leafletting for my business. I miss out all letterboxes that sat no junk mail.
I have no idea whether other people respect those signs?

Not that my leaflets are junk- of course :)
Some just say no menus so I put my plumbing leaflets in those I guess they just don't want to order take away food.

Billygoats · 22/05/2014 12:00

The menus are annoying at the time and I stuff them in a draw, then when we sporadically want a takeaway they are not quite so annoying. I'm sad and sit and compare them all, we've used just eat before but it's such a faff finding stuff on there.

meditrina · 22/05/2014 12:04

We get a seemingly unending flow.

I did feel particularly smug when I dumped the Green Party flyer straight into the recycling.

StarGazeyPond · 22/05/2014 12:06

Get a compost bin - leaflets make great compost.

NOBODY sells your details - they get it from the Electoral Roll........sigh!

herecomesthesunlala · 22/05/2014 12:23

"poor sore-backed leaflet deliverers and poor recycling collectors"

^That's their job and they are being paid for it!

MaggieJoyBlunt · 22/05/2014 12:26

I have no idea whether other people respect those signs?

Not here Sad

ShatnersBassoon · 22/05/2014 12:30

I quite like getting crap through the door. This morning I've had the church newsletter (quick scan to see who's being prayed for, and a moment idly spent wondering why), a Lib Dem flyer (handsome candidate) and a takeaway menu (couldn't find any funny spelling errors Sad).

foolishpeach · 22/05/2014 12:44

YANBU. I get loads too. They go straight in the recycling - what a waste of time and effort for everyone involved.

I thought about getting one of those signs, but I think I would become incensed if people put things through anyway. It is better for my blood pressure to not bother. Smile

clam · 22/05/2014 12:47

If they're delivered by Royal Mail and don't have my name and address on them, I put them back in the local letterbox.
If Royal Mail are being paid for distributing this unsolicited crap, then they can clear it away again too.

peppinagiro · 22/05/2014 14:42

YANBU. It drives me insane. Especially because they always seem to slam the letterbox as hard as they can, just when DD's gone to sleep, and wake her up. I'm sorely tempted to go out and ram fistfuls of leaflets down their throat next time, in the hope word will get out that we do not want any sort of shitty flyer. It's like a groundhog day of constantly picking them up off the mat!

PeppermintInfusion · 22/05/2014 15:31

Tuesday seems to be leaflet day where I live, I was off sick yesterday and was sick listening to the clack of my letterbox about 10 times with all the junk mail. I want to get one of those signs for the letterbox but DH says it will make me look like one of those crazy old ladies that sticks a knife in footballs that go over their fence Sad
I think they do have to 'obey' no junk mail signs though

misstiredbuthappy · 22/05/2014 15:41

I completely agree OP. We have all these different bags\bins\boxes to put our recycling in. The council goes on about how important it is to recycle , then you get god knows how many leaflets and charity bags. Kinda defeats the object.

helpmeimamess · 22/05/2014 15:59

The sign sort of worked for us, still got some bits through though but a lot of it did stop. Definitely not good for blood pressure though.

orangepudding · 22/05/2014 16:02

YANBU.

I get countless pieces of junk mail a day. What really annoys me is that the leafleters walk through my front garden which takes them right by my living room window. They are delivery leaflets I fonts want and having a nose into my house at the same time!

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 16:22

The sign I put up didn't work Sad about 20 mins ago yet another takeaway menu landed on my Matt.

We live in a cul de sac so when the leaflet boy walked back past my house I opened the door called him over and handed him the other 30 or so replicas of the menu he just posted that had been lurking on my windowsill.

I'm hoping that now he realises just how many of their shit menus I already have they will stop posting them multiple times a week.

They are not thin paper leaflets either they are proper card booklets you would expect to find on your table in a restaurant.

MinesaBottle · 22/05/2014 17:36

I have a no junk mail sign and it hasn't made much difference. It also seems to mean that some distributors of menus, taxi cards etc think they can just leave their crap on the step instead Angry. We do get slightly fewer leaflets than before but it doesn't really seem to work. I guess no one delivering junk mail thinks of their mail as junk.

shivermekimbers · 22/05/2014 17:44

I hate it too and I think the sheer amount now means it reduces any potential effectiveness of the advertising as I just put the whole pile straight in the recycling without reading. Although a few months ago I complained to Papa John's about being constantly bombarded with their flyers and that seemed to stop them.
