Yes i know its just a soap but they are running 2 rape storylines right now. The first is john paul who went to the police then freaked out and wouldnt report it (still waiting to see how this pans out)
Then (and the 1 that is really pissing me off) is where Holly accuses Dodger because her boyfriend finds out she slept with him. So she cries rape. This is what people assume is always the case. The percentage of false allegations are in line with any other crime but why do tv shows make out that this is what women do for revenge

Hollyoaks cover a huge amount of storylines that other soaps shy away from. Generally they are very well handled. This storyline will be no different.

If you are pissed off by it, don't watch it.

Onesleeptillwembley · 21/05/2014 17:35

I thought Hollyoaks was for older kids. If you don't like it don't watch it.

Backtobedlam · 21/05/2014 17:37

Hollyoaks crime rate is so disproportionately high in every aspect compared with any UK village ever, that I don't think you can really be annoyed about one fake rape claim storyline. They have storylines covering a range of issues, so no different to any of the others really.

squirrel996 · 21/05/2014 17:38

Can't believe they've made Dodger into a rapistSad

starshaker · 21/05/2014 17:39

Maybe it pisses me off because its a subject that affects me. Is it too much to ask that there is a storyline where the rapist gets jailed? Maybe it is because thats not what happens in real life

Yabu for watching hollyoaks. Can't bloody stand it but always get sucked into watching it

Nomama · 21/05/2014 18:05

I don't watch but I would imagine that, if the writers are switched on, a storyline comparing the 2 will come up.

MostlyMama · 21/05/2014 18:08

he's not, squirrel, holly is lying.

WooWooOwl · 21/05/2014 18:12

People do not always assume someone is falsely crying rape if they say they have been raped.

And sadly some people do falsely accuse others of rape, there's no reason why that shouldn't be reflected in a soap.

TidyDancer · 21/05/2014 18:15

Yes, Hollyoaks is generally very good at handling this kind of storyline. They have some very underrated actors and actresses.

PaintedLady2014 · 21/05/2014 18:21

To be honest....out of all the soaps, I do feel that Hollyoaks is the best when it comes to dealing with sensitive and controversial storylines. They had the whole "Jacqui and Gilly" storyline about rape and that really made me think a hell of a lot. They tackle transgender, gay rape, mental illness, suicide and bullying....all sorts. Generally it is handled well.

itsbetterthanabox · 21/05/2014 18:46

I agree op. They should consider the impact a story like that will have. The news already does a huge amount of coverage on the very small number of false allegations that there. They also really revel in men being found not guilty. Soaps aimed at children shouldn't be perpetuating victim blaming.

RedToothBrush · 21/05/2014 19:21

You aren't paying attention. There are actually 3 rape storylines running at the moment.

Maxine anyone?

starshaker · 21/05/2014 19:22

How will they handle this well? Somebody cries rape, she gets caught out then what? Charged? shunned? How will this encourage genuine people to come forward when rape will almost always be 1 persons word against anothers.

OP posts:
starshaker · 21/05/2014 19:23

Sorry red forgot about that one.

But that's like saying women never cry rape and they do Confused

The last two rape cases in Hollyoaks featured clearly guilty men who got off, which also happens.

starshaker · 21/05/2014 19:58

Unfortunately i know that all too well muncher
I didnt say women never cry rape but it is a hell of a lot less that what people assume.

Everybody seems to know somebody who was wrongly accused. Unfortunately there is a very high chance that they werent wrongly accused but they got off anyway because people like to blame the victim or assume she mus be lying because they know their friend, brother, father, son or husband would never do such a thing

Hollyoaks is a huge steaming pile of arse. The writing/acting/storylines are all terrible.

I wrote to complain about 10 years ago when Frankie's (or someones) husband was having an affair and one of his children said something like "I wish he had cancer instead, that would have been better..."

Very sensitive handling of the topic Hmm
