Ours don't have to wear the jumper when it's hot. But the blazer is a must! Though not all day. My DS comes out of school with his tie half way down, top button undone and the blazer is whipped straight off. It's horrible. I buy cotton shirts, but all the M&S shorts/trousers etc are mainly designed to make you sweat. As are the school jumpers and and blazers!

Actually, I agree with you, OP. It amounts to physical punishment in my opinion, all the worse because they have done nothing to deserve it.

It's the only thing I hate about DD's school....

I think that's terrible. I would hate to be told I had to wear a blazer and jumper in boiling hot weather.

Are you serious? I have been uncomfortably hot several times on trips to the UK---and I live in Florida.

My son's school blazer is literally like a blanket. He's frequently given an earful if seen without it on - it really pisses me off.

Today, it was hot enough to be an issue.

Dd has eczema. Being hot makes her itch and she rips herself to pieces.

If she couldn't take her jumper and blazer off she's literally be bleeding by the end of the day if not sooner.

YANBU. My ds's school uniform is navy with a light blue school-logo polo shirt. In hot weather they wear the polo shirt, navy shorts and navy sandals I wouldn't be happy with them being told to keep a jumper or blazer on at all and would complain to the school...or probably just tell the school I wouldn't risk them overheating and they would not be wearing it.

I don't agree with school uniforms in general, but this -- i think people who design useless and impractical things like that, deserve to get rotten vegetables thrown at (joking)

At our school they let the kids wear polo shirts with no tie, blazer, shirt after May half term.
Totally disagree that the weather isn't hot enough that blazers are uncomfortable. Most adults are in T-shirts or short sleeves.

Don't blame "state schools": this is some schools and specifically, some headteachers. Hardly conducive to learning to be hot and uncomfortable, and I very much hope the teachers are subject to equally stringent rules.

As a teacher, I always allow students to take their jumpers off. The last thing I want is a room full of sleepy, uncomfortable, irritable kids! It's hardly conducive to learning. We don't have blazers but a previous school I worked in did have them Sept-April but then they were allowed to wear polo shirts instead for the summer term.

I don't know if it's a breach of human rights but it seems pointless and counter-productive to me.

(And it can get pretty hot in the UK - particularly in a room packed with 30 teenagers with the sun blazing through windows that only open an inch due to health and safety!)

No cool teachers here; jacket on day for staff and blazer on day for pupils . can take them off in the classroom though.

I agree. Each school should have a light weight, comfortable summer option as part of their uniform. It is not healthy to get all over heated and feel so miserable.

Wearing a jumper or blazer in 30 degree heat (not there yet this year but it does happen in the uk) is probably inviting heat stroke. I'd like to see a head teacher defending that to the local papers! Even not at that level, forcing children to be physically uncomfortable for no reason except a petty power trip is totally unacceptable imo. Why do schools think policies like this which treat kids like dirt will gain them respect?

Of course it can get bloody hot enough for it to be an issue! It might only be a small portion of the year but we do get some red hot days here.

I remember being in school and getting threatened with detention for not wearing a jumper during a heat wave. I took the detention!
I understand that children have to learn that sometimes you need to follow the rules even if you don't like them but I do think some common sense is needed. No one in their right mind would be wearing a jumper/blazer round here today.

When my DSis was at school (5 years ago) all the pupils had to wear Jumper and blazer, all day not even allowed to take it off in the classroom, they also had to have all top buttons on shirts fastened and all ties done correctly. If they were caught breaking any of the rules they were put in isolation, there was no excuse for not wearing uniform correctly.
