DP was admitted last week and moved to HDU last night. They don't know what's wrong. He has fluid on belly, some kind of infection and impiared liver function. There is talk of moving him ti ICU. We seem to be waiting on endless tests. He is 35 we have a three year old and I am 7 months pregnant. I need him . Please tell me your positive stories of recovery from these situations.

Holding your hand from afar, Grobags - I hope that whatever it is, it's something they can deal with as easily and quickly as possible. xx

My grandma aged 84 spent some time in ICU after septicaemia caused renal failure needing dialysis. She was extremely poorly.
Now 87, fully recovered and still driving and holidaying abroad on her own!

nannynoss · 19/05/2014 15:37

Hi, hope he is okay. Have skimmed the thread but just wanted to say, my dad was in HDU after being found at home unconscious. They thought he was going to pass away en route to hospital (later found out he'd been in that state for 4 days before being found) and when I got to him in HDU it looked like he wouldn't make it. It looked really bad. Fast forward a week and he was ringing me from his mobile asking me to break him out of hospital as he was bored!
HDU were so brilliant. I think we have them to thank for him recovering as quick as he did. He is still fine to this day, 18 months on.

I've been a patient in ICU as an adult. I don't remember much of it as I was on heavy-duty medication but I know I felt very safe. There was 1:1 care, regular attention from specialists to keep me in a good position for recovery, and fast and effective pain relief. That was nearly 3 years ago. I'm fine. As a patient experience, the ICU part was the best bit of my hospital stay. Scary for my family though. Waiting for a diagnosis was the most horrible part.

A friend was in ICU for two weeks after a very difficult labour. She is fine, as is her baby (and the 'baby' now has a baby brother).

grobagsforever · 19/05/2014 16:31

Thanks all. He is having a good sleep right now, no more news on diagnosis.

My son (20s) spent two weeks in HDU last year. It (& ICU of course) are the best place for someone so ill. The nursing care was outstanding. In HDU it was 1 nurse to 2 patients. In ICU it's 1to 1. At the Royal London, anyway.

It was a terribly traumatic time, but he came through it and was able to take up his new career, in medicine, which is going brilliantly.

Good luck. Wishing your DH a speedy recovery.

I spent 2 weeks in HDU at 15 months. Other than flu I've never been ill again. My poor parents were given no odds for my survival.

My twins spent 6 weeks in SCBU. It was very scary one was touch and go for a while. It's their 9th birthday today and they couldn't be more healthy and happy!

Bunbaker · 19/05/2014 17:24

I hope it is something easily treatable Flowers

ChestyNut · 19/05/2014 17:27

Thanks for you OP.

He will be getting the very best care.

Take care if yourself too, I know it's hard tho.

SugarPlumpFairy3 · 19/05/2014 19:20

I really hope you get some news and a plan soon, the wait must be agonising Thanks.

Someone I know was in ITU over Christmas. She had a strangulated hernia and was critically ill. Her family were told to expect the worst on Christmas Day :(.

Amazingly she recovered after a couple of months in hospital.

Itsfab · 19/05/2014 19:28

Thinking of you and hope it isn't too much longer before you get the results.

fluturainpristina · 19/05/2014 19:29

I was in ICU for just over two weeks a couple of years ago with a collapsed lung from broken ribs and abdominal fluid. I do have some ongoing problems but I'm pretty much fine now.

Hope your DH makes a speedy recovery OP Flowers

Waltonswatcher1 · 19/05/2014 20:20

It's going to be ok grobags ; whatever happens . Because it has to be .

That's what I believed when facing a situation similar to yours , it gave me the strength to get through some shitty bits .
Have faith in yourself and how you will handle any outcome.

grobagsforever · 19/05/2014 23:00

Thanks all DP is off noradrenaline and ate a reasonable amount of dinner. Just need that diagnosis now. I finally called his parents, he wouldn't let me til now.

PrincessBabyCat · 19/05/2014 23:10

Thanks I hope he feels better.

My DH was born a tiny preemie and was having seizures constantly. He was in ICU and they didn't think he'd make it. He is now huge and one of the strongest men I know.

That's the only ICU story I have, but it has a happy ending. :)

grobagsforever · 20/05/2014 11:11

Thanks princess. DP is expected to move to ADU/HDU tomorrow (so down from ICU). Still waiting on a diagnosis.

Very best of luck grobags, my experience of relatives in ICU was that the changes are very very small and what you hope for are several changes all going in the right direction.

ProfYaffle · 20/05/2014 12:38

My dh was in Neuro ICU, this was 10 years ago and dd1 was 6 weeks old. Awful, awful time but he made a full recovery.

bumbleymummy · 20/05/2014 12:39

Glad he's making progress. Hope you get a diagnosis soon. Thanks

spiderlight · 20/05/2014 12:45

My dad was on ICU at the age of 84 with pneumococcal meningitis and pneumonia. we were told that given his age and general frailty, his prognosis was, in the A&E consultant's word, 'grim', but ITU had other ideas! The care he received there was phenomenal - from the very first day, even when he was sedated and ventilated with a tracheotomy, the doctors told me that they had every intention of getting him fully recovered and home. And they did! He is now approaching his 90th birthday, still as sharp as a needle.

Sending good thoughts for you all.

DrFunkesFamilyBandSolution · 20/05/2014 12:48

Thinking of you, fingers crossed for a diagnosis soon. X

MissDuke · 20/05/2014 13:15
