AIBU to be wary of letting the kids lick out the cake mix bowl ...

... because of the raw eggs?

It was an essential part of the cake-making experience when I was young, but times, and farming methods, have changed and now I'm not so sure I should encourage it (though I might have a sneaky lick of the spoon myself for old times' sake when they're not looking).

if they are Lion stamped eggs they are salmonella free - let them lick away

Skina · 17/05/2014 15:47

Yes you are. That's the best big about making cakes.

Iseesheep · 17/05/2014 15:47

I'd let them. It was probably more dodgy to do when you were a kid as I think most chickens are vaccinated against salmonella now.

Catsmamma · 17/05/2014 15:48

YABtotallyU

it's the best bit of cae baking....my lot will materialise as if by magic in time to help clear away and get dibs on the bowl and they are all big teens!!

JuniperTisane · 17/05/2014 15:48

My two young boys are living proof that a diet enriched by regular and consistent consumption of bowl scrapings is absolutely fine.

DavidArchersBoa · 17/05/2014 15:48

YABVVU

Eggs are safer now than they ever were when we were kids and we were all fine so lick away!

meganorks · 17/05/2014 15:49

What a killjoy! Let them lick! We also have dippy eggs here because they are tasty and fun. And I agree with above posts about lower risk of salmonella now than when we were kids.

YABU. Buy lionmarked eggs - they are vaccinated against salmonella - and let them lick away!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 17/05/2014 15:52

I let them, until the time younger son vommed massively the next day. Probably just a coincidental sick bug but it put me off.

eltsihT · 17/05/2014 15:53

My 3 yo and 1 yo are currently licking cakey whisks from making fairy cakes yabu it's part of the fun.

HermioneWeasley · 17/05/2014 15:54

I never let a cake mix bowl go unlicked and I've yet to catch anything. My kids would bloody riot if I said they couldn't

TattyDevine · 17/05/2014 15:56

YABU. Its not a childhood without a licked out cake mix. Buy lion stamped eggs, the chickens have been inoculated against salmonella.

MoreHoursInTheDay · 17/05/2014 16:02

Excellent - I've never been more pleased to be told I'm being unreasonable! Grin

And I never knew about Lion Stamped eggs, so I've learned something too.

This article gives a good explanation of why you are so unlikely to get salmonella from cake batter (and I think the chances may be even lower in the UK because of higher standards for testing/vaccination etc): Go ahead, lick that spoon.

Uptheairymountain · 17/05/2014 16:06

YANBU.

It's a great excuse that means all the leftover cake mix is yours and yours alone Grin.

EssexGurl · 17/05/2014 16:16

My 2 have just done this! Eggs are safer now.

DH worked in an egg packing factory years ago. Eggs got returned to them and they just repackaged them in new egg boxes with new dates. Wouldn't be allowed now!

Fairylea · 17/05/2014 16:18

Cake mix is one of my absolute favourite things ever. Sometimes I make cakes just to eat the mix.

Andrewofgg · 17/05/2014 16:27

Uptheairymountain I wonder if you have just explained why my DM said it was bad for me but never seemed to worry if I got to the bowl in time!

Groovee · 17/05/2014 16:30

My ds is allergic to egg white so he doesn't lick the bowl and I don't do it at work if baking with the children.

Otherwise I see no issues.

NickNackNooToYou · 17/05/2014 16:34

Dear me, licking the bowl is the best bit!

When I was younger eggs were used from our own hens who would lay wherever plus I drank unpaturised milk Shock You'd have freaked out Wink

LetUsPrey · 17/05/2014 16:35

And I know you would never tell your DC that the egg risk was only particularly relevant to young children or very old people and that's why it's okay for mum to lick the bowl for not for the DC ...

As if anyone would do that

SaggyAndLucy · 17/05/2014 17:23

luck the bowl???
Christ! I've been known to make cake batter just to eat it raw! I'm not dead yet!

picnicbasketcase · 17/05/2014 17:25

I didn't know about lion marks either but my dc have always eaten the mixture with no ill effects. Raw cake mix is lovely. Mmmmm

puntasticusername · 17/05/2014 18:00

My sister loves raw Christmas cake mix. For a few years after she left home, Mum had to post her a portion in a Tupperware box - apparently Christmas wasn't Christmas without it. She never got ill, think Mum even used to send it second class cos she's incredibly tight about postage
