AIBU to be wary of letting the kids lick out the cake mix bowl ...

... because of the raw eggs?

It was an essential part of the cake-making experience when I was young, but times, and farming methods, have changed and now I'm not so sure I should encourage it (though I might have a sneaky lick of the spoon myself for old times' sake when they're not looking).

But, but, but, but, ..... cake mixture tastes wonderful. Often better than the actual baked cake to me.

When I was a child scraping out and eating the remains of the cake mixture from the bowl was a rite of passage. I loved it. I'm still here, as are my children, who also do it.

SquirrelledAway · 17/05/2014 19:27

My mum told me that I was depriving my children by not baking cakes and letting then lick the bowl out.

She was right.

stonecircle · 17/05/2014 19:58

I understand that eggs are meant to be salmonella free these days, but having had salmonella 20 years ago I still can't quite bring myself to risk it. Being unable to eat anything at all for 3 weeks and a week in hospital, coupled with terrible pain is not something I'd care to repeat!

FreeSpirit89 · 17/05/2014 19:58

YABU - the best part of childhood cooking is licking out the bowl... Even if we did have to fight grandad for it!

BigRedBall · 17/05/2014 20:01

Eggs are much safer now than they were in the olden days! My children love kicking the bowls at the end, let them do
It!

DeWee · 17/05/2014 20:05

I remember my dm deciding that we couldn't lick the bowl due to salmonella.

That meant rather than a few mean sparce scrapings she left for me, I perfected the distraction at a relevent moment and extraction of a whole spoonful. Grin

Now in my house the rule is you can make cakes if you want, but there have to be decent scrapings for all. We've never yet had any food poisoning. BBQ-ed sausages otoh Envy

Sorry to hijack thread but does this mean I can eat dippy eggs when pregnant???

FreeSpirit89 · 17/05/2014 22:37

gratefulforwhatihavegot - I enjoyed dippy eggs, complete with soliders and salt whilst I was pregnant in 2009. All was okay, only one head and the correct amount of toes.

Grin

YABVU raw cake is so much better than cooked cake. Lion stamped eggs should be free of salmonella.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/05/2014 23:25

My 14 yo DS scoffed RawCake yesterday but I won't let him use a metal spoon in my KMix bowl in case he wrecks it.

DC have done this since they were tiny, it's a perk of the job Grin

BolshierAyraStark · 17/05/2014 23:26

Really? Hmm YABVVVU

zoemaguire · 17/05/2014 23:32

Grateful - i ate dippy eggs at least twice weekly through 3 pregnancies! 3 healthy offspring. Only they do love raw cake-mix (well, haven't tried it on the 3-month-old yet, but weaning is only three months away Grin

morethanpotatoprints · 17/05/2014 23:35

It's what being a kid is all about, let them get stuck in .

grobagsforever · 17/05/2014 23:52

I'm pregnant and I lick the bowl. Eggs are totally safe nowadays.

morefalafel · 18/05/2014 00:36

YABU - but the article expat has linked to (while good) is mostly aimed at the US where they treat eggs far differently.

They clean their eggs and keep them refrigerated at all times, while here in the UK we don't refrigerate and eggs sometimes come with muck and feathers still on them. I can't remember the reason now but EU eggs aren't washed at all.

The outcome is the same though, the eggs will almost certainly NOT have salmonella.

This explains better!

goldopals · 18/05/2014 04:51

I eat raw cake mix frequently :)

SanityClause · 18/05/2014 08:26

We can't use eggs in baking, because my DC have an intolerance to eggs. We use Orgran egg replacer, instead. It can be used in most cakes, etc.

If you were worried about salmonella in eggs, you could use that, instead.

PrincessBabyCat · 18/05/2014 08:45

It's a great excuse that means all the leftover cake mix is yours and yours alone

Ooh, I like that. DD can't have raw cookie dough or cake batter... for her.. safety... yes, I will keep her safe by biting the bullet for her on this one. Grin

slartybartfast · 18/05/2014 08:54

i buy my eegs from the farm, no lion stamps on them, but i have never banned the licking of the bowl.
i am sure i only read about banning of the bowl licking on MN and it seemed at the time that all the other posters were banning Shock

slartybartfast · 18/05/2014 08:54

actually i buy my Eggs from a farm, or a neighbour,

slartybartfast · 18/05/2014 08:59

oh and i dont keep my eggs in the fridge, i follow delia smith's original guidelines, and others no doubt,
i probalby should but you are meant to take them out in plenty of time to adjust to temperature.

PeanutButterAndMarmite · 18/05/2014 09:08

Having seen a very close friend develop a massive allergy to anything poultry related since contracting salmonella from raw eggs as a teenager, I don't let my DCs lick the bowl. Although we buy our eggs from the local farm so not as safe as the industrial ones you get in supermarkets.

SelfRighteousPrissyPants · 18/05/2014 10:21

My son won't eat cake mix which is Sad....except it means I get more Grin

ForeskinHyena · 18/05/2014 14:04

Yes, yabu. It's the best bit, as we all know, and unless you also ban your DCs from having dippy egg and soldiers (another great childhood memory) or even a fried egg, without ensuring it is totally cooked through solid, then cake mix is no more likely to make him sick than anything else.

As long as eggs are lion stamped and within a couple of weeks of being in date then I'll happily eat them raw and feed them to the DCs.
