I made a pie from scratch this morning. I left it in the fridge, covered with foil and with a note saying :

Brush me with a beaten egg using this (pastry brush that was on top) and put me in the oven at 180 for 35 minutes. I will look brown and bubbly and lovely when I am done.

So I get home from work and find a pie, in the oven at 220, covered in foil. The puff pastry was stuck to the foil and raw so when we took the foil off, it stuck to it and now we have a semi raw AND burnt pie with no lid Angry and the baby should have eaten this pie 45 minutes ago.

DH said he didn't know that a pie goes in the oven without foil. AIBU or is he a great lumping BUFFOON.

Surely lots of people cover pies, at least for part of the cooking to stop the crust getting burnt, of course that's normally only for the later part of cooking once the crust is already cooked, but it does mean it wouldn't be unusual for someone to have seen a pie covered in foil.

And if you don't know, you don't know, you can never assume someone elses knowledge. If you wanted him to cook, either let the cook choose, leave explicit instructions, or accept things can go wrong.

As to cooking something before going to work when DP's going to be home before - completely reasonable, I do it often, even on days with DP is home with a pretty quiet day, sharing chores within a day is just bonkers, it's hardly an effort to prep a meal if you're up, just saves everyones time. So YWBU for that despite what muttoncadet and others suggest, but I'm afraid YABU to be too annoyed that he just didn't know, he could've done better though.

YANBU - it's tricky righting instructions for people. You want to give them enough information without completely patronising them. My dh is not a great cook but is improving.
It's painful though, I tell him to simmer something and he looks at you blankly, so then I explain it to him simply and he acts like I'm being being condescending.

jasminemai · 16/05/2014 22:19

I have a competent job, and have had many. I just cant cook and have had many ridiculous cooking incidents at home and in the workplace. Its just my thing.

ToffeeMoon · 16/05/2014 22:25

YABU. I wouldn't have instinctively known that's how you wanted it. I would have been nervous about deviating from your instructions. I suppose I might have called to check. But YABU. My DH wouldn't have known either.

CorusKate - Confused no idea why you think I'm 'cowardly' for not naming the 40 odd posters accusing the OP of being an idiot for covering the pie she put in the oven? Weird. I have been on MN practically since it started, I have never been accused of being 'cowardly' I can assure you Grin But hey, if you want to make it all about you, go ahead love.

OP... wouldn't it just have been easier to egg wash the pie, with the instruction to put it in the oven at whatever temperature?

Or better still, put the pie in the oven and cook it so that slices can be cut out and microwaved?

I don't know... I have a husband that doesn't cook, I just work around him as I know the depths of his incompetence in the kitchen. It saves me pulling my hair out. Thanks

Thank you for giving me a giggle! He probably read it literally, and glazed the tin foil :)

Panzee · 16/05/2014 22:30

That film that Homer came up with had a talking pie in it.

TillyTellTale · 16/05/2014 23:15

Never cooked a pie. Don't eat them.

I would have taken the foil off, egg-brushed the pastry, noted that your instructions don't say 'replace foil' and that I'm to cook it til pastry goes brown, and would have placed it in oven sans foil.

Logic, innit?

UncleT · 16/05/2014 23:19

Definitely a bad plan to wash with egg and then leave to sit for ages. It will just soak in rather than produce a nice glazed effect.

YANBU - someone with no cooking experience at all should have figured your instructions out.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 16/05/2014 23:23

How does it soak in? The pastry will adsorb some of the wash, yes, but it won't soak in, it can't.

WorryWarrier · 16/05/2014 23:23

This has made me laugh out loud!! Who cares if yabu or not, it made my day! Smile

This is a 'light hearted' thread isn't it?

Did he offer an explanation for the 180/220 element of the fuck-up? (not sure how different this is as I speak gas...)

Isabeller · 16/05/2014 23:58

Stand in hot water for half an hour...
