to think I should not have to explain this to a nearly 40 year old DH....

I made a pie from scratch this morning. I left it in the fridge, covered with foil and with a note saying :

Brush me with a beaten egg using this (pastry brush that was on top) and put me in the oven at 180 for 35 minutes. I will look brown and bubbly and lovely when I am done.

So I get home from work and find a pie, in the oven at 220, covered in foil. The puff pastry was stuck to the foil and raw so when we took the foil off, it stuck to it and now we have a semi raw AND burnt pie with no lid Angry and the baby should have eaten this pie 45 minutes ago.

DH said he didn't know that a pie goes in the oven without foil. AIBU or is he a great lumping BUFFOON.

Oh, for heaven's sake, surely an adult human being should be ashamed of not being able to look after his family? And "looking after" includes being able to cook nutritious and appetizing meals.

ExcuseTypos · 16/05/2014 20:47

If he's never cooked puff pastry before you can't blame him for leaving the foil on.

StealthPolarBear · 16/05/2014 20:47

lol NannyLouise :o

StealthPolarBear · 16/05/2014 20:48

But it doesn't have to specifically include cooking a pie, surely?
Which are not really that healthy at all

ExcuseTypos · 16/05/2014 20:49

Marjorana- maybe he can cook nutritious and appetising meals but that doesn't necessarily include pies.

BrocanteHunter · 16/05/2014 20:50

I don't know why or how the 'Why did you put foil on it?' (subtext you are an idiot and it's all YOUR fault) accusation question came up, I cover everything that goes in the fridge and my fridge gets properly cleaned at least every fortnight, but usually weekly. It's not actually a character flaw to cover things Hmm

It goes without saying that the foil needs to be removed to put an egg wash on it and what muppet would then put foil on back onto sticky egg??? Really? I'd expect a small child to work out that that would be a bloody stupid thing to do - let alone a grown man.

Verdict - He is indeed a BUFFOON Grin

fuckinglondonballs · 16/05/2014 20:54

Yanbu but YABU to breed with such an idiot.

He can't tell when a pie is cooked so you have to write in language suitable for a 10 year old about it being 'brown and bubbly and lovely'? Hmm

mathanxiety · 16/05/2014 20:57

I hope you made him replace the meal he ruined all by himself.

Buffoon.
YANBU.
On the bright side, you are probably lucky you didn't use cling film or you would possibly be still scraping it off the oven.

DD1 did something really stupid like this once, at 15. She rarely spent any time in the kitchen up to then. I don't know how anyone could get to the ripe old age of 40 without seeing pies being taken out of the oven sans foil, or taking the odd pie out himself.

meditrina · 16/05/2014 20:57

"YABU to breed with such an idiot"

Pretty sure I got inside DH's pants way before he got into my fridge.

wooldonor · 16/05/2014 20:58

Some posters must live very narrow lives if they think that everyone knows how to cook a pie, I'd be willing to bet that the majority of the population has never cooked a pie from scratch and it doesn't surprise me at all that someone would put the foil back on.

I really don't know what I would have done, it's quite possible I would have put it back on simply because you'd covered it in the first place.

Martorana - I'm in no way ashamed that I don't know everything about cooking every possible meal, what an odd view.

I also find it odd that people think a roast dinner is unhealthy yet a pie is a nutritious meal.

BrocanteHunter · 16/05/2014 21:00

I could understand it if falafel had only left cooking instructions, but she included instructions to egg wash the pastry....FFS a chimp could work out that you don't put foil back on top of egg surely??

Matorana - how rude are you? Why shouldn't someone use a jar to make a pasta bake if they want to? Why do you assume the OP's DH cannot 'look after' his family simply because he screwed this one thing up? Are you alway so rude?

BrocanteHunter · 16/05/2014 21:05

CorusKate - it's not all about you love Hmm. Try reading the other posts saying she shouldn't have put foil on it... if my post had been directed at YOU then I would have highlighted your name, as I have here :)

FunnyFoot · 16/05/2014 21:09

Is this Pie thread getting bun fighty?

I'm pretty sure Dame Mary Berry would have something to say about pies and buns being different Grin

Of course you're not. But a pasta bake from a jar????????

guineapig1 · 16/05/2014 21:20

Op I share your pain. My dh, though lovely, would have done similar.

Since we had the incident where I left a lovely chicken, leek and mascarpone bake in the fridge in a glass Pyrex dish with fitted plastic lid and the instructions to bake for 40 mins to arrive home to a flustered dh trying to scrape melted plastic from the base of the oven and ending up ordering a pizza, I now leave very clear instructions and tbf he now asks!!!

LizLimone · 16/05/2014 21:23

Sounds like he fell victim to the classic male fallacy of 'if I turn the temperature up higher, it'll cook quicker'. Even good men fall prey to this. My DH cooks very well, cooks about 50-50 with me but he remains convinced of this notion that higher temp = more efficient.

Sigh. I would make him eat the half-cooked pie himself. Only joking. Kind of

Ponkypink · 16/05/2014 21:27

I have never cooked puff-pastry covered pies because normal pies are better, so would not know about foil for that kind of pastry, it is not obvious unless you either write it or know the other person has done it before. I would also not respond well to first-person instructions from a pie, I'm afraid. Do you work for some kind of smoothie company by any chance?

Custardo · 16/05/2014 21:30

LTB seriously. radical feminists where are you? they only do this shit so they dont have to ever do it again and then they feign the " oh, what, am i a man not born with instuctions on how to use a cooker ....like a woman is - y'know automatically knowing this shit along with sewing, and how to use very complicated dishwasher and sewing machine

MARK MY WORDS deliberate fuck ups are just a ruse to make you think incomp[etance - i am sure he has a very cometant and responsible job - but he cant reas simp,e ndtructions?? baffling right?

Martorana · 16/05/2014 21:32

Custardo, I tried but they shouted at me.......

StealthPolarBear · 16/05/2014 21:32

"I am full of lard and 1000 calories per slice but I have a carrot contained within therefore I am nutritious. Eaaaaaat meeeeee"

Now, come on! It's not just men, you know. Why do you think it was my dad taught me to cook? Grin
