To think this wedding song is inappropriate

A good friend is getting married later this year and we were speaking on the phone and she told me what she plans to have as the first dance at her wedding:

Let's get it on (think it'a by Marvin Gaye)

Very nice romantic song but isn't it all about sex. I feel weird about watching her and her husband dance face to face basically singing about how they're going to go and fuck eachother I know they are anyway but I have an innocent mind in front of their parents

AIBU and a massive prude? Grin

We had You and Me Song by the wannadies, just because we loved it and it's reasonably easy to dance to! My mother didn't approve though, apparently it's not first dance material.

Totally outing myself here but at my wedding we walked into the hall to very serious religious music quickly followed by some awful dance number about getting your butt out.

I am still not sure if the DJ was a jerk or just had a poor command of English (this was abroad). I went to other weddings at the same venue and the same songs were played as some very religiously conservative couples came in. Confused

TheOneWithTheHair · 15/05/2014 12:23

Just remembered, Dh wanted me to walk up the isle to Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter.

I think my Dad would have refused!

MinionDave · 15/05/2014 12:43

Oh god I can't listen to Crying without thinking about Raquel in that scene in Only Fools and Horses Grin cracks me up every time

If I had my wedding again I'd have picked Ever Fallin in Love with Someone You Shouldn't have Fallen in Love With just for the comedy value. We chose David Gray 'Be Mine' in the end though, because we both loved him Smile

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 15/05/2014 12:53

The bride wanted "It Had To Be You" by Harry Connick Jr. Tasteful, appropriate.

The groom objected, thought she'd had so many things she wanted, he could at least choose the song, blah blah. Yes BillyBanter you guessed it :
"Every Breath You Take" by the Police about love, the psycho variety.

Lovely.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 15/05/2014 12:58

Better than everything I do, I do it for you. At a recent wedding. WHY?

Ours started with 'everytime we fight' but is a nice song.

A really popular one is God Only Knows by the beach boys and that starts with 'I may not always love you' or something similar. A lot of people must just think it sounds romantic.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 15/05/2014 12:59

Panda that was our first song too. I think that our parents weren't too keen either but it was only 2 minutes long and DH spun me around.

Itsfab · 15/05/2014 13:08

A relative had Sex on Fire at their evening do. I was a bit surprised. I'm clearly getting old Grin.

MissPennySweet · 15/05/2014 14:17

The words for god only know are:

" I may not always loves you, but as long as stars are above you, you'll never have to doubt it"

I.e. I will always love you

but I'll still shag a teenager in my case

Goddamnit, pregnancy hormones going crazy here as this had made me cry thinking about first dance at my wedding. Am sure you all know it but the first words are 'I may not always love you...' Which might have seemed odd to people who don't know the full song, but it's a very meaningful one for us (&dh is a mega fan). Aah full in sobbing now but in a good way! Oddly thinking about our wedding music makes me much more emosh than the photos do (too busy think pooh my chin looks spotty there...)
So yabu, your pal has good reasons I'm sure,

monkeymamma · 15/05/2014 14:50

Plus let's get it on is a CHOON!

monkeymamma · 15/05/2014 14:51

Oh cross posts, god only knows has already been mentioned. Yup, if you listen beyond the first line it is very romantic.

FrenchJunebug · 15/05/2014 15:46

It's a great song!

slug · 15/05/2014 15:48

We didn't have a formal 'first dance'. I can't remember what the DJ was playing when i ventured out on the dance floor. We did, however, walk back down the aisle after getting married to Loaded.

Just what is it that you want to do?
We wanna be free
We wanna be free to do what we wanna do
And we wanna get loaded
And we wanna have a good time

That's what we're gonna do
No way baby let's go
We're gonna have a good time
We're gonna have a party

It got a laugh.

chemenger · 15/05/2014 16:05

I went to a wedding where the bride's father sang "Bye bye love" to the happy couple , as in

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm-a gonna cry

Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love goodbye

There goes my baby with someone new
She sure looks happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby till he stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been

Some of it is appropriate but some seemed a bit odd sung father to daughter.

phantomnamechanger · 15/05/2014 16:05

best/worst wedding hymns I have heard are

"dear lord and father of mankind forgive our foolish ways, reclothe us in our rightful mind..."

"he who would valiant be 'gainst all disaster"

"fight the good fight"

and Lord of the dance with the bit "it's hard to dance with the devil on your back"

sadly many people want church weddings and don't know hymns, have a vague recollection of something they sang in assembly at school, and don't really look at the words

still, nothing trumps the person who wanted to call their daughter "Kyrie Eleison" just because they had heard it in a song and it sounded beautiful - it means lord have mercy.

MilksteakCharlie · 15/05/2014 16:10

Outing myself here.

I'm walking down the aisle soon to an instrumental version of Where Is My Mind bye the Pixies.

I think that's pretty inappropriate, but we don't care. People can make of it what they will Wink

NoArmaniNoPunani · 15/05/2014 16:58

Crazy by Patsy Cline is what my mum wants at her funeral!

Tricycletops · 15/05/2014 17:07

Friends of ours had their last dance to Separate Ways by Journey. It's quite clearly about breaking up!

StoorieHoose · 15/05/2014 17:11

I walked down the aisle to Let's Get Married by the proclaimers and signed the register to I Hope you Like The Smiths by We See Lights (he doesn't but he liked that song)

WorraLiberty · 15/05/2014 17:12

I read the OP wrong and thought, 'Why would they want to fuck each other in front of their parents??' Shock

Blush
javotte · 15/05/2014 17:44

I went to a wedding in France where the bride had chosen "Where the Wild Roses Grow" (where Nick Cave sings about smashing Kylie Minogue's skull with a rock). She didn't understand English, but she could have asked someone who did!

Timeisawastin · 15/05/2014 18:38

I know of a couple who asked for the 'Robin Hood theme song' as their first dance. When they stepped up on the floor, what they actually got was....'Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen...'

KittyandTeal · 15/05/2014 18:45

I insisted on Joy Divisions 'love will tear us apart' at my wedding. It's an important song to me for many reasons and it felt important to have it played on such an important day.

I imagine some were horrified :)

WoodBurnerBabe · 15/05/2014 19:18

Mine was I Only Wanna Be With You, but the version by Me First and the Gimme Gimme's. I do like the Dusty version, but the other is nicer to dance with.
