To think this wedding song is inappropriate

A good friend is getting married later this year and we were speaking on the phone and she told me what she plans to have as the first dance at her wedding:

Let's get it on (think it'a by Marvin Gaye)

Very nice romantic song but isn't it all about sex. I feel weird about watching her and her husband dance face to face basically singing about how they're going to go and fuck eachother I know they are anyway but I have an innocent mind in front of their parents

AIBU and a massive prude? Grin

TouchPauseEngage ah well it makes more sense then, doesn't it? Now, after the wedding, is their time for getting it on. Let's face it, those picking anything other than traditional songs are unlikely to be getting it on on their wedding night as too drunk and it doesn't matter anyway as having sex is unlikely to be a novel experience.

No judgement or criticism, just a matter of fact.

People can, of course, pick what they like but, equally, the guests have the same right to have a good laugh at song choice.

TouchPauseEngage · 15/05/2014 09:19

It was certainly appropriate jeni Grin

We all later agreed that we immediately started thinking about our first time and then projecting onto the bride and groom and imagining an awkward, disappointing fumble. Which probably wasn't what they were aiming for Grin

flixybelle · 15/05/2014 09:20

If it means something to the couple then that's great if it's just a random choice then it's odd .
My MIL had Rule the world by Take That which is fine except they are bikers and everyone wore leather and they had the loudest rock band at the reception then put on that song (on CD) it was odd.
Worse one ever though was friend of a friend who had Beyoncé Irreplaceable (it was the song playing when they meet and apparently only remembered the 'you're irreplaceable' part and forgot about the lines. 'To the left to the left everything you own in a box to the left' and 'Don't you ever get thinking you're irreplaceable!'

2rebecca · 15/05/2014 09:26

Often first dances are just "our song" which a couple have an attachment to that is nothing to do with the wedding situation. This may be one of those.

Lolly86 · 15/05/2014 09:30

Our first dander was Michael Buble - Everything. FWIW it was one of our songs as was john legends ordinary people but that just wasn't right for a wedding lol!

Dinosaurporn · 15/05/2014 09:35

A close friend of mine did a (bad) tango to the Moulin Rouge version of Roxanne.

Mind you the bride did get drunk later that night and pulled her dress up and flashed everyone.

Class.

fairnotfair · 15/05/2014 09:36

DH chose the song for our first dance.

He chose "Crazy" by Patsy Cline.

I still get irritated thinking about it, but I don't want to hurt his feelings. Sad On the plus side, we're still pretty happy 15 years on!

Crazy
I'm crazy for feeling so lonely
I'm crazy
Crazy for feeling so blue
I knew you'd love me as long as you wanted
And then some day
You'd leave me for somebody new

Worry
Why do I let myself worry?
Wondering
What in the world did I do?

Oh, crazy
For thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying
And crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving you

Crazy for thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying
And crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving
You

Bambambini · 15/05/2014 09:41

I really wanted "It Must Be Love" by Madness as I think it's one of the most romantic songs. Was too chicken in the end and went for something more slow and less likely to scare the Ednas.

MissPennySweet · 15/05/2014 09:51

I had "god only knows" a mumsnet favourite when I married my cheating shit of a husband.

Per MN rules the list of wedding songs to choose from are:

God only knows - the beach boys
One day like this - elbow
Everything - Michael Buble
Highway to hell

Please feel free to add others Grin

I had a live barn dance at my reception with a 6 piece band + a caller. Everyone got up & had a stomp, even my 86 year old granny. Yee Ha!

The worst best hymn I've heard was at a friend's wedding, we all stood in Church & sang,
"Give me oil in my lamp keep me burning,
Keep me burning 'til the break of day!"Blush

BookieTubules · 15/05/2014 10:07

Frances, us too, only we were poncey and called it a ceilidh. It was brilliant fun. We shared our first dance with about a hundred other people but at least it was one where you stayed with the same partner throughout!

SuseB · 15/05/2014 10:20

Having given this much thought before my own wedding I concluded that, based on lyrics, suitability for older relations and the fact you could dance to it, 'Happy Together' by the Turtles was the only song I could come up with... in the end we had a live band at the wedding and no official first dance - think the band cracked off with something by Crowded House, which I loved and promptly went round persuading everyone to dance and no one could refuse because I was the bride - ha ha! #slightlypissedbride

vladthedisorganised · 15/05/2014 10:22

That's hilarious!

A friend of mine is an organist and has to play some shockers at weddings. Apparently "Fight the Good Fight" is surprisingly popular, though he does try to deter the (many) people who want 'Pie Jesu' at the signing of the register - more suitable for funerals??

Abide With Me is another often-requested favourite - again by people who only listen to the first three words.

There are many worse songs for a first dance. We chickened out of a few of the songs we liked - not sure what the reaction to "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy might have been, nor yet how I would have danced to it in a wedding dress..

marmitelover · 15/05/2014 10:33

Favourite one of all time (friend of a friend) was U2: Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For ... Funnily enough, the couple divorced a few years' later

ephemeralfairy · 15/05/2014 11:00

If I ever get married (unlikely at the moment) the first dance will be 'Too Drunk to Fuck' by the Dead Kennedys. If I am brave enough. If I wimp out it will be 'Love Cats' by the Cure.

ephemeralfairy · 15/05/2014 11:02

Or possibly 'Grounds for Divorce' by Elbow. Grin

At my cousin's wedding they played I Just Want to Make Love to You. In the church!

I guess thinking of the lyrics, it might not have been so bad, but it was in 1997 - so the song was very much associated with the Diet Coke adverts. I think everyone was starting to imagine the bride getting turned on by the 'hunky' bride groom (except he wasn't hunky, and couldn't have looked less like the Diet Coke man!)

Bambambini · 15/05/2014 11:12

Love, love love "God Only Knows" by the The Beach Boys!

One of my all all time favourites is Crying by Roy Orbison - but doubt that would go down well!

generousfdudgy · 15/05/2014 11:47

we had " Shake your tail feather" as its a favourite of ours.
Was once at a wedding where their first dance was to " Let's Face the Music and dance"

EverythingCounts · 15/05/2014 11:55

It wasn't at a wedding but I did once hear someone ring into a radio station, saying they were getting married in a couple of days, and requesting Band of Gold. I did think 'Have you ever listened to it?'

Surely though Please Release Me would be the worst ever choice...

Boglin · 15/05/2014 12:00

I know someone who had Stooshe 'Black Heart' played at their wedding ('Daddy, I've fallen for a monster') which did make me Hmm, although at least it wasn't their first dance!

Honsandrevels · 15/05/2014 12:01

Charlietangotea We had 'You're the one for me fatty' by Morrissey as our first dance! My MIL was horrified. She'd suggested something light we could waltz to.

Atbeckandcall · 15/05/2014 12:07

PennySweet, glad mine is on the approved list (merci Mr Buble).
