to assume that it is common knowledge that 'diet' drinks are awful for you

Got off to the wrong foot on the other thread.

I see lots of people buying diet drinks as the nutritional information says they are virtually the same as water.

Do most people still think these drinks are healthy?

yes MrsM she will need veneers - her teeth are stained and brown and they are too deeply stained to bleach or deep clean

she is 9 and horribly conscious of it - mainly because other kids helpfully point out her 'dirty teeth'

Ooh if there are people here who know about these things can I pick your brains? I have noticed that quite often after I have my lunch at work I get what feels like heart palpitations, my heart goes all racey and I feel a bit panicky. Could it be related to having a diet fizzy with my lunch?

jemma2609 · 14/05/2014 20:26

I love diet coke but the caffeine levels are v bad...

ClashCityRocker · 14/05/2014 20:26

Yup.

gordyslovesheep · 14/05/2014 20:28

MrsM if can offer any advice I'd bite your arm off - we are a very healthy teeth family (44 no fillings Grin ) and despite lots of care an attention we haven't been able to stop the damage

it's really horrible for her

gordyslovesheep · 14/05/2014 20:29

I am about to open a caffeine free diet Pepsi Grin it kicks cokes arse

DoJo · 14/05/2014 20:31

HappyMonkey - is it a caffeinated fizzy drink?

SpottyTeacakes · 14/05/2014 20:31

High fives welcome. Although I have just done an injection so I can scoff some hobnobs. Needs must and all that.

tobysmum77 · 14/05/2014 20:31

just stick to gin is my advice.

blueberrycupcake · 14/05/2014 20:32

I don't like the taste of aspartame and will only have an occasional (once a month or so) regular coke. What I have found is that whenever I've had a diet drink of any kind, I feel very hungry very soon after. Is that just me? Has anyone else noticed this with these diet drinks?

Mrsmorton · 14/05/2014 20:32

What else has your dentist suggested aside from veneers? Do you know why the fluorosis is so bad?

Also, I thought you meant it was so bad they needed extracting, not that they would need cosmetic treatment so I apologise for my tone. In my language, beyond repair means "you won't go home with that tooth" Smile
There are things that can be done before veneers, we tend to wait til at least 18 for them but other stuff can help, espnof she's very conscious.

tobysmum77 · 14/05/2014 20:32

jamjimjam quite.

tobysmum77 · 14/05/2014 20:33

I don't find that at all blueberry. Lots of people go on about sugar cravings caused by aspartame, I eat very little sugar

Mintyy · 14/05/2014 20:33

I haven't read all the myriad of pages about aspartame on the internet. I just know it tastes disgusting. So I'll drink a soft drink full of sugar about once a month, maybe, probably less frequently than that in the winter. I haven't had a filling for 30 years. All of this is fine because I am not addicted to any soft drink.

MyrtleDove · 14/05/2014 20:34

I prefer diet coke to full-sugar coke - diet coke uses the 'new coke' recipe, which by the way is why coke zero is different as it uses the standard coke recipe.

However, Pepsi is nicer IMO. And yes there is a definite difference! Pepsi uses more lemon oil (as diet coke does), less orange oil and a different kind of vanilla.

TheHappyMonkey · 14/05/2014 20:34

DoJo, it varies, sometimes I have the diet 7 up which I don't think is caffeinated, sometimes I have diet Pepsi and sometimes Pepsi max.
It's a good question though, I should probably monitor whether it happens with all of them or just some. It could be a reaction to the caffeine I guess, I don't drink tea or coffee and until I started this job recently I hardly ever had fizzy drinks so maybe my system just is over sensitive to caffeine.

AElfgifu · 14/05/2014 20:34

Does anyone really think that they are no more harmful than water?

?????????

Don't understand this comment Miffybun. They are less harmful, surely, being so much more isotonic,

MyrtleDove · 14/05/2014 20:35

Also, pure water is full of chemicals, because everything is a chemical. If you don't want to drink anything with chemicals in, you're going to die of dehydration.

FWIW I am not addicted to any soft drink either, but do like the taste and will drink them.

gordyslovesheep · 14/05/2014 20:35

we have seen 2 dentists and my ex has even explored private options - no one will do anything until she is 18 and brace free (incase she needs braces) - we have no idea why it's bad - all 3 girls have had the same regiment, same tooth paste, same water - only her's are affected

she wont smile and if she ever does she is horrified people might notice

Mrsmorton · 14/05/2014 20:37

I will pm you when I get in. FWIW, not all enamel defects thy look like fluorosis are actually caused by fluoride.

riverboat1 · 14/05/2014 20:40

I drink one or two cans of diet coke a day, because I really like it and because I don't drink coffee or tea so occasionally need a pick-me-up. Friends are constantly sending me links to articles saying it's bad for you in various ways, but until it's actually proven to be properly dangerous to health or I experience negative effects myself I choose to keep drinking it.

I have a healthy lifestyle, my meals are nutritious and mostly cooked from scratch, eat a lot of vegetables, am not overweight, exercise regularly, don't smoke or take drugs...I'll take my chances with drinking diet coke.

gordyslovesheep · 14/05/2014 20:43

Thanks MrsM I had wondered if it was that - dentists don't seem to want to answer. I know it's not decay but have no other ideas x

ProfessorBranestawm · 14/05/2014 21:06

Ah thanks Gordy, can't find it, presumably deleted!

ProfessorBranestawm · 14/05/2014 21:06

(The original thread I mean)

UncrushedParsley · 14/05/2014 21:20

I am sure this is a more reasoned debate than the OP hoped for hopes this won't inspire another thread by the hairy-handed one
