Just had to send off for a new photo ID licence and have today recieved back my new photocard and new paper copy . Now as i took my test in 1988 on my old paper licence i had full entitlement to drive just about every road worthy vehicle except possibly a tank . My new paper licence just says A and G H .

What can i do ?

Did you photocopy before you sent it off?

Just looked at mine, photocard, I also passed my driving test in 1988. I have A, B,BE,B1,C1,C1E,D1,D1E,F,K,L,N,P on the plastic bit, I have full bike and car license. Don't have my counterpart with me but I'd take a guess that it lists on there the provisional entitlement only. Have another look and check your photocard.

SoulJacker · 14/05/2014 11:45

That's more entitlement than a standard post '97 licence so you'd need to check the details

DoJo · 14/05/2014 12:21

I suppose it depends on whether you actually intend to drive any of the vehicle categories listed. As far as I remember, automatic license to drive some categories of vehicle changed just before I took my test (darn it!) in the late 90's. You could always ring them and ask...

SistersOfPercy · 14/05/2014 12:25

This happens a lot I believe. General consensus is to photograph before sending.
Contact them, they should reinstate your entitlement.

holidaysarenice · 14/05/2014 12:27

It did change in the late nineties but those who had it got to keep it. Bitter me?

Also have you reached over 65? Highly unlikely I know but some of your entitlement might change then? X

Ooooops , have removed photo card with hideous picture that i have to live with for another ten years to discover entitlements are on the back , full list , oh and i can also drive a road roller and tracked vehicle , just need to find one to borrow Wink

I refuse to update my paper licence on principal. I'm not paying to renew the bloody thing so unless I move (unlikely) I shall stick with my ratty old bit of pink paper Grin

AreYouFeelingLucky · 14/05/2014 19:23

You can get a fairly big fine for failing to update your license.

AuntieMaggie · 14/05/2014 19:42

AreYouFeelingLucky as long as personal details are correct then we have until 2033 to upgrade to a photocard licence so it sayshere - I certainly had no issues when I showed it at a police station recently

Nomama · 14/05/2014 19:43

We've just moved so I have taken a copy of our licenses... I won't have my minibus entitlement stolen from me, I tells ya!

Nomama · 14/05/2014 19:45

Absolutely, Auntie. We still have ours, or we did until last week. I refused to send it off just to be charged for a bit of plastic and new piece of paper.

We both drive company cars occasionally too - no-one mentioned it, they just copied what we gave them.

gobbin · 14/05/2014 19:56

The plastic card expires after ten years and must be updated.

If you find you have 'lost' entitlements, be very afraid. There are many instances of people having to retake tests if they could not prove they'd done the test. They won't accept photocopies of a licence unless signed by a notary (and a notary will only sign a copy in the presence of the original).

I applied for a copy of my personal records held by a DVLA to be sent to me under the Data Protection Act (for a £5 fee). This details every contact I've ever had with them, ever, including phone call records. They cannot deny their own records so, I'll never be in a position where I have to retake a test. This was important as I have car, motorcycle and lorry entitlements and couldn't contemplate losing them. Google DVLA Data Subject Access Request

Not whilst it's still paper and the details on it correct I cant.
