New thread for all the Chalet School fans!

OP posts:

right-will type out the passage

"Dr jem scowled at her portentously . "mutiny in the ranks eh? Why can't you be obedient you scaramouche? How do you know you're not sickening for something awful?"

"like - like thrush?" said jo unexpectedly.

"well -er-no; not quite that. still, that's not the point"

Whyamihere · 21/05/2014 14:27

It is in the Armarda books so survived the cut. It is an odd comment, but I also thought it was oral thrush, I knew babies could get it. It does seem to through Dr Jem a bit though.

TheCSLibraryPree · 21/05/2014 14:32

Anyone who I previously sent transcripts to, I have now sent out Exploits!!

Anyone else who want Exploits - or any of the other books I've got, send me a message and I'll send it out!!

TheCSLibraryPree · 21/05/2014 14:35

Tanith,

If you're up for it, would you consider sending copies of those two books out?

DeWee · 21/05/2014 14:36

If EBD had been more like that, I'd think she had put it in as a slight mischievous "see if they noticed". I know when I first read that (I would have been about 9yo) I assumed it was something Joey ahd made up.
Maybe EBD didn't know it as an "underneath" illness? Could it have had a different name back then, maybe only recently it was linked with the oral type. Or maybe it was just such an unmentionable that it wouldn't have been named.

Beeyump · 21/05/2014 14:37

Oh my giddy aunt, Hester - I need The Chalet School Encyclopedia (Volume One)! It even has that fabby, murderous diving girl on the front!

upthedamnwotsit · 21/05/2014 14:38

I haven't read these books in forever, but can I pick the brains of those in this thread and ask if anyone remembers how often they switched generations? I mostly read the early ones with Joey in them. I know she left and had triplets(!) but not much more than that.

Beeyump · 21/05/2014 14:39

Pull up a chair, wotsit, reeling off the list of Joey's children may take a while...

Whyamihere · 21/05/2014 14:40

TheCSLibraryPree, I've messaged you about the transcipts as I'd love them, first time I've messaged though, so if you don't get my message can you let me know

upthedamnwotsit · 21/05/2014 14:40

Oh dear, really? Grin

I was curious about who they focused on after she left. She seemed to be the heart and soul of the place.

SelectAUserName · 21/05/2014 14:42

She ended up with eleven children, wotsit and a fanny like a prolapsed elephant. Triplets was just the start of it.

upthedamnwotsit · 21/05/2014 14:45

As a child I thought she'd go off and have adventures somewhere, though looking back God knows why- they all got married off rather quickly. At one point she promised to go be Elisaveta's lady-in-waiting! That could have been fun for a while.

NotCitrus · 21/05/2014 14:49

After Jo leaves, she hangs around a bit and Robin and then the Chesters/Lucys/Ozannes get involved - the latter crossing over from other EBD books. Then Mary-Lou turns up who is originally a nice child with crap social skills, but soon becomes answer to everything, especially after nearly dying in a toboggan accident.

Then you get the triplets becoming major characters, plus Peggy and Bride Bettany and chums, but once they are staid Seniors we''re left with Jack Lambert who isn't portrayed well, and a bunch of totally interchangeable new girls and friends.

Summerbreezing · 21/05/2014 14:51

Where did the Chester/Lucys come from? They seem to be very close to the Russells and Maynards.

Beeyump · 21/05/2014 14:51

Jack Lambert is an absolute horror, I'd forgotten how much I dislike her Angry

Whyamihere · 21/05/2014 14:54

I do have volume 1 of the Chalet School Encylopedia Blush, I'm waiting for volume 2, they're fun to dip into and investigate the less well known characters, plus it picks up on some of the inconsistencies.

HesterShaw · 21/05/2014 14:56

What was the last one? And was there any indication in it that it was the last one?

Whyamihere · 21/05/2014 14:57

Jack Lambert is Gay Lambert's niece and named after Jacynth Hardy, I'm too lazy to work it out but is the timing of this OK, Jack is about 11 when she starts the school and Gay didn't know Jacynth until the book Gay from China. How long is this set before Jack joins?

JuniperTisane · 21/05/2014 15:19

I can't believe I've missed this thread! I haven't read my books for a good couple of years, must dig them out again. I am interested in reading the transcripts to see how much is missing from my ropey old Armadas though. I will PM TheCSLibraryPree I think.

Off to wash my hair in heiliges wasser now...

HesterShaw · 21/05/2014 15:22

Don't you mean heisses Wasser mein Liebling!!!! Oh pure hilarity!

JuniperTisane · 21/05/2014 15:25

Gimme the fucking holy water. And make it lukewarm!

DeWee · 21/05/2014 15:26

Roughly Joey has:
Triplets (Len, Con, Margot)
3x singleton boys (Charles, Steve, Mike, can't remember which order)
1x Twins (Felix and Felicity)
1x singleton girl (Cecilie)
1x twins (Geoff and Phillippa)

She also adopts Ruey and her brothers, Marie Claire and a few others along the way. I think Erica is adopted by them, and possible Adrianne too. Hmm

All the last books could be entitled "Joey interferes again".

Beeyump · 21/05/2014 15:27

BEST JOKE EVER, SUCH LAUGHS

DeWee · 21/05/2014 15:33

The last book by EBD is "Prefects at the Chalet School".
Some hints that it may be the last, like Len and Reg getting engaged, coming across as a bit of a tying loose ends up.

It's not very well written, and is a lot of rehashing af previous incidents. I have heard it suggested that EBD didn't actually write it herself, she either wrote the plot and let someone else do it, or just let them do it all. Not sure, but it there is a definite lack of ability in the writing-but EBD died not that long afterwards, so she may have not been too well.

SolidGoldBrass · 21/05/2014 15:42

I wonder if EBD simply didn't know what thrush was. Could she have been confusing it with candidiasis which is where you get it in your digestive system and basically feel generally rubbish?
