to wash my Crocs in the dishwasher (and poss DC's Clarks too)

DC and I all wear Crocs and every few months I put them all in the dishwasher on top rack with kitchen bin lid on bottom rack for a good clean. They come out like new, as does the bin lid. I mentioned this to a friend the other day and she looked a bit horrified like she was making a mental note not to ever eat off my dishes again. Is this disgusting? I put plates that had raw meat on them in the dishwasher so assume if it can kill that bacteria shoes will be ok too.

Also, have been considering putting all the Clarks school shoes in too but haven't had the courage yet. I tried Clarks in the washing machine on a special sport shoe setting but it didn't get them clean at all. They weren't ruined in any way though.

Lastly, (I can see this coming) please don't say I am BU just for wearing Crocs! I have size 9/ 9.5 feet and not a huge array of options. I stay away from the 'clog' styles though.

I always wonder about the people who object to pet bowls in the dishwasher.

If you eat meat, then there are bits of actual animal in there, what possible difference could a bit of cat spit make?

Lioninthesun · 14/05/2014 07:53

There's an alarming lack of basic biology and food hygiene understanding on this thread. Do people honestly think meat is the same as faecal matter?
Do people not understand that bacteria thrive in hot moist areas?
I'm not saying don't do it - your house and all that. Just don't try to convince everyone it is 'healthy' Confused

Morloth · 14/05/2014 07:55

SPIT Lion, I said SPIT.

As in I don't understand the problem with a pet bowl in with the human bowls, what could possibly happen?

SHIT is obviously different.

Ilovexmastime · 14/05/2014 08:01

Yanbu.

I washed the dog bowl in the DW for the first time yesterday after reading about it on here. Looks like the crocs are next Grin.

Lioninthesun · 14/05/2014 08:04

Oh I'm sorry, your pet obviously uses loo roll to wipe it's arse and not it's tongue. My error.

CannulaNellie · 14/05/2014 08:09

Inspired! My work crocs are stinky so I'm going to shove them in today.

The top rack sterilises baby cups etc I believe so it must get up to some pretty high temps in there.

I agree re chicken plates too btw, if I put raw meat juices in there then subsequently use that plate and don't get I'll then it's fairly effective of getting rid of bacteria.

Haven't read whole thread from 17.53 yesterday onwards - but some people seem to have misread me. I don't put the loo-brush in, but I do put its holder through. The one that spends most of its time holding a dilute solution of bleach.

Loo brushes get binned and replaced when they look like they need it.

KoalaDownUnder · 14/05/2014 08:26

Goldmandra: I hope you don't allow raw meat in your kitchen then

You think raw meat poses the same bacterial risk as human faeces?

I don't even know where to start...

Lioninthesun · 14/05/2014 08:26

Don't sweat it everlong, chuck in your reusable nappies instead and think of the time you have saved traipsing to the washing machine! To be really nifty splash out on a whole trout and add it to the mix to give your dinner guests a party to remember, while you can be smug that you don't now how to clean that hot dry oven. Genius Hmm

Lioninthesun · 14/05/2014 08:26

*have to clean

How wonderfully patronising, well done you! Smile

Maybe, people just don't care? I know I don't. I've lived in dirt for weeks on end, not being able to wash my hands even bar the most cursory swill - and THEN cooked food for myself and others. Still here, still healthy, still not dead.

A dishwasher is practically an operating theatre in comparison Grin

I wasn't trying to be patronising - I was unsure how people could do this if they did know. To me it is like telling your kids to play in traffic. Horses for courses.

LtEveDallas · 14/05/2014 08:54

Umm, no, Ever, I wouldn't, but then I have one of those new fangled throwy-away things Smile. Can't cope with bleach etc in loo brush holders after the industrial bleach incident with FIL.

I have put DDs wellies in the dishwasher - I suppose there is a chance they were shitty, but actually I was cleaning damp and cobwebs n stuff from where they were stored in the shed.

murphys · 14/05/2014 08:56

In Canada you can buy an attachment that goes into your dishwasher - that you put your baseball cap on so that it keeps its shape while is get cleaned in the dishwasher Wink

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/05/2014 09:03

This thread reminds me of that tv programme about the woman addicted to coffee enemas who cleaned her enema kit in her dishwasher. When the camera panned round to her dishwasher it had a big brown streak of coffee poo down the front of it.

Mim78 · 14/05/2014 09:10

Washing your shoes in the dishwasher is disgusting.

TheScience · 14/05/2014 09:21

I wouldn't put potties or loo brushes in the dw (I chuck loo brushes too I'm afraid) but I would put crocs if I had any. I also put plastic sand/water toys and DS's plastic step in there. I clean the filter regularly and put dishwasher cleaner through.

I wash pooey nappies in the washing machine though.

HavannaSlife · 14/05/2014 09:21

I used to have a button on the washing machine for trainers.

I wouldnt put them in the dishwasher though

hennybeans · 14/05/2014 09:33

Clearly some people feel very strongly about shoes in the dishwasher being unhygienic. What it boils down to for me is that no one has convincingly explained how a dw can handle the bacteria commonly found in raw meat (googled and got salmonella, listeria, parasites, e coli, campylobacter, among others), but cannot handle the microscopic amounts of faecal matter that might be on my shoes (googled for bacteria in faeces and got much of the same result, plus shigella).
The filter of a dw must certainly be a manky place but the clean water washing your dishes must come from clean pipes/hoses, not run through the manky filter.
If the dw is such a breeding ground what are we all doing using one at all? Either the machine is effective at cleaning and thus shoes are ok, or it isn't and no one should have one in their kitchen. Seeing as how I have lived my life not becoming ill from the dw, I am going to stay on the side of the dw being an effective cleaning machine.

Morloth · 14/05/2014 09:42

Lol. You can know about bacteria and still not be worried.

We are rarely ill. Very rarely. The last year the kids have been to the docs once, for vaccinations and no one has missed a day of work or school due to illness either.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Toilet brushes though. Yuck. Surely you make sure they are visibly clean after use and then store them in bleach?

murphys · 14/05/2014 09:46

My dishwasher also has a UV thingie on it that you can set at the end of a programme to sterilize everything in it. So you can sterilize things in a dw. I haven't ever used it as I didn't see the need really, but had I put in some crocs which may or may not have a bit of faecal matter on them, I may just push this button. I should add that I put my dogs bowl in fairly regularly too. I also put in plates which helpful Labrador has assisted in getting the last layer of anything scrumptious off of, without pushing the sterilize button. We are healthy nevertheless and haven't succumbed to any dreaded diseases as a result.

Morloth · 14/05/2014 09:48

What brand is that murphys.
