to wash my Crocs in the dishwasher (and poss DC's Clarks too)

DC and I all wear Crocs and every few months I put them all in the dishwasher on top rack with kitchen bin lid on bottom rack for a good clean. They come out like new, as does the bin lid. I mentioned this to a friend the other day and she looked a bit horrified like she was making a mental note not to ever eat off my dishes again. Is this disgusting? I put plates that had raw meat on them in the dishwasher so assume if it can kill that bacteria shoes will be ok too.

Also, have been considering putting all the Clarks school shoes in too but haven't had the courage yet. I tried Clarks in the washing machine on a special sport shoe setting but it didn't get them clean at all. They weren't ruined in any way though.

Lastly, (I can see this coming) please don't say I am BU just for wearing Crocs! I have size 9/ 9.5 feet and not a huge array of options. I stay away from the 'clog' styles though.

Why on earth don't you just put them in the washing machine?

struggling100 · 13/05/2014 16:39

I would put them in the washing machine on a very short, cold wash. I do muddy sports kit and even fell shoes (which are fabric and a lot less robust than crocs) in there.

I wouldn't put them in the dishwasher, not just coz of hygiene but because I think the detergent might really hurt the colour and the steam might not be good for the rubbery plastic.

divingoffthebalcony · 13/05/2014 16:40

The BIN LID? Oh the horror.

It's a wee bit... lazy? I'd wash the bin lid by hand, out in the garden, so the filthy bin juice germs don't get splattered around the sink and work tops. Shoes only need a quick scrub by hand as well.

struggling100 · 13/05/2014 16:41

Also, my dishwasher has a compartment underneath it that contains residual water that never totally drains - I think this is standard for many models. It would be a bit of a hygiene risk, I think, to have outdoorsy mud in that water.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/05/2014 16:45

I'd wash the bin lid by hand, out in the garden, so the filthy bin juice germs don't get splattered around the sink and work tops.. My child plays in the garden. She doesn't play in the sterilized dishwasher. Fine if the thought turns you off, that's just irrational weirdness and we all have a bit of that. But pretending it is anything other than completely safe and clean is a little silly.

AlpacaLypse · 13/05/2014 16:52

Don't worry OP. We're all anonymous on here so I'm going to join you and admit that I, too, wash almost anything plastic or metal or ceramic that'll fit in my dishwasher. Including that perennial mn bugbear, the loo brush holder. And if I take the top drawer out, I can just fit the bins in.

The enema thingy story was a bit near the knuckle even for me though.

MrsRuffdiamond · 13/05/2014 16:58

Including that perennial mn bugbear, the loo brush holder.

Shock

Aaaaargh! Just.......Aaaaargh!

hennybeans · 13/05/2014 17:08

I guess my logic is that if I can wash a plate that had raw chicken on it and subsequently eat my breakfast off the same plate when it comes out of the dishwasher, then surely the dw must kill all the bacteria. If there was water somewhere inside that never quite drained for example, surely we would all have been sick from salmonella or something, irregardless of shoes.

Re using the washing machine, as I mentioned, I tried with poor results. I think it's the steam from the dishwasher that gets them clean.

I have been doing it a while and the colour and condition of the rubber hasn't suffered.

Re it being lazy, erm, well isn't just using a dishwasher in general 'lazy' instead of washing by hand. If you take the hygiene issue out, why is it ok to wash dishes in the dw but lazy for anything else? I like to call it 'time saving'. In 2 minutes I can put 6 pairs of Crocs and the bin lid in vs the time to get a toothbrush and scrub 6 pairs of shoes and then clean the sink out (!!) and then go outside (with a toddler helper) and scrub the bin lid.

Why is it disgusting? It's a cleaning machine, it sterilises everything in it.

It doesn't. If it did we wouldn't need expensive autoclaves to sterilise instruments at work.

Theodorous · 13/05/2014 17:18

I would eat from your crockery for the Clarks but I draw the line at crocs.

hennybeans · 13/05/2014 17:53

AlpacaLypse even I had a bit of a shiver at the loo brush Grin but I won't judge! I buy loads of 50p loo brushes at Ikea and throw them out every few weeks. Not great for the environment but neither is loads of bleach down the toilet to get the marks off otherwise.

I think the idea of shoes in the dishwasher is just wrong for some people and I don't mind that one bit. Just wanted to know if my friends were likely to think it's disgusting- judging by this, some will, some won't. I think it's ok so I will carry on.
It also never occurred to me that the bin lid might be gross!

Silicone dildos wash wonderfully in the dishwasher. I use the high temp saniwash setting always. I also do cat dishes in the dishwasher. I eat in restaurants, where all sorts eat off dishes that may not be as well washed as at home.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 13/05/2014 18:06

To be honest I think the op makes a perfectly valid point when she says if you clean plates that had raw meat on then you can clean shoes in the dishwasher. Raw meat grosses me out much more than mucky shoes. And I am a meat eater.

I would have no issues at all with eating off your plates op, in my book yanbu.

This thread is making me think I under use my dishwasher. Grin

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 13/05/2014 18:06

I think it eeuurrggg!!!! Each to their own I suppose. For those who don't object, if a 5 star restaurant were to wash their staffs crocs and bin lids in the dishwasher, would u be happy eating off their plates and using their cutlery n glasses?

arethereanyleftatall · 13/05/2014 18:07

Right, id better not tell anyone I put dds potty in the dw then. I do scrape shit out first.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 13/05/2014 18:09

Theo I wouldn't mind. I bet the temperature in professional dishwasher has to be very high to fit in with health and safety. I find it more disturbing thinking about everybody else who has used the cutlery before me than thinking a bin kid has been washed in the same machine as my plate. I can only assume op doesn't put the crocs in the same cycle as her knifes and forks!

ILiveOnABuildsite · 13/05/2014 18:11

arethereanyleftatall brilliant idea with the potty. I am just finishing with the potty here and was trying to think of a way to get it ready for storage for the next one. It'll be a couple of years before I need it again and want to make sure it's properly properly clean. Thanks

previous post was a reply to theoriginalmrsdarcy not theodorous*

My mistake I badly abbreviated, oops.

BigRedBall · 13/05/2014 18:13

I think it's disgusting! I think someone puts their mooncup in the dishwasher too on here. What is wrong with peplum?

BigRedBall · 13/05/2014 18:15

Grr. People not peplum. (But there is a lot wrong with peplum, horrible style IMO).

aquashiv · 13/05/2014 18:20

I wash shoes regularly in the washing machine

BadgersNadgers · 13/05/2014 18:22

OMFG. Some of this is revolting.

Theodorous · 13/05/2014 18:31

I don't mind any of it apart from the crocs. I wash my (tasteful IKEA) net curtains in the dishwasher. With a finish powerball tablet. Much better than the washing machine. I was only being mean about crocs, low blow really, none of my business what shoes people wear.

xvxvxvxvxvxvxvxv · 13/05/2014 18:31

Badgers- most of it is revolting.
Pottys loo brushes dildos bin lids
Dishwashers often leave bits of food stuck on plates don't they?
Wearing crocs snyway- why would you do that?

fluffyfanjo · 13/05/2014 18:32

I put DS's football boots in the DW - it brings them up a treat.

Think about it,is it really any worse than washing mucky shitty hands in the bathroom/kitchen sink ?
In the past 46 years I've no doubt cleaned my hands (and body) of any manor of yucky poohy unhygienic matter, all shock horror, in the sink,at least a DW operates at higher temperatures and is more likely to kill any germs.
