What other fruits can you use for a crumble?

I made an apple crumble last night. First time since I was 13 years old! It was flipping lovely. My children loved it. Just had some for breakfast too Grin.

Now I have the crumble bug. Can I mix fruits? Which combinations are the best? What's the best fruit to use? Ripe or unripe?

We make it with a bag of frozen mixed berries - strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, redcurrants. You can buy the bags in the supermarket for around £1 or so.
Makes a lovely crumble!

I know this pic doesn't do it justice but I'm quite proud of myself. We had hot custard with it.

apple and pear is nice, you can also use plums, rhubarb, peaches.....

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 12/05/2014 10:19

My kids love pineapple crumble (Known as Gruffalo crumble in this house, and is eaten with Owl Ice cream Wink ).

I think you can use most fruits, I think[[http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/26195/berry-crumble.aspx berry mixes are good in a]] crumble, also rhubarb crumble is nice.

Rhubarb
Peach & apricot
Summer fruits
Pear

Try mixtures - peach and plum is nice!

Apricots are lovely in the summer (and are a good use of the not entirely ripe ones that we get there - only buy when on offer obviously). Use some ground almonds in the crumble mix. Delish.

Gooseberries! The best crumble is definitely gooseberry crumble. If you can get hold of red gooseberries, you will be in heaven, but the white ones are gorgeous too.

Rhubarb works well in a crumble and is in season and plums are good too.

HicDraconis · 12/05/2014 10:21

Rhubarb, apple & blackberry, mixed berries, plum, peach & pear, apple and ginger, boysenberry, apple & raspberry... Mix and match :-) cherries go very well with a chocolate crumble topping.

TaurielTest · 12/05/2014 10:21

I have a freezerful of apples so usually do apple + blackberry, apple + rhubarb, never tried pineapple though. I like to make the topping with half flour, half porridge oats.

It's also nice cold with a bit of plain yoghurt as a bircher-muesli-esque breakfast IMO!

Glad DS isn't the only one who had crumble for breakfast BlushGrin

BigRedBall · 12/05/2014 10:23

ruby that sounds lovely! Yesss, I can I imagine that, yummy.

princess my dd was telling me about pineapple crumble at school once. Do you just chop up a whole pineapple or use tinned? I think she'd love that too.

Peach and apricot sounds lovely too

Prety well anything as long as at least one of the fruits you use have some good tartness to them. Experiment ! (It will nearly always be edible.)

ruby1234 · 12/05/2014 10:31

I sometimes stir in a handful of porridge oats into the crumble mix - makes it a bit crunchy.

Hoppinggreen · 12/05/2014 10:34

Strawberries cooked in butter and sugar with a bit of cinnamon is my favourite

PetaPipa · 12/05/2014 10:41

Pear with chocolate drops - amazing!

mkmjimmy · 12/05/2014 10:48

Pick some blaeberries (also know as bilberries, whortleberries...) small English blueberries. Taste of nothing when they are raw but make the best crumble ever (in my opinion).

liquidstatehasrisenagain · 12/05/2014 11:12

Rhubarb and strawberry, Peach and raspberry are lovely summer flavours. Also cherry or cherry and plum is one of my favourites. Haven't had pineapple since school (tinned) but will try soon. Tinned fruit is fine for a crumble and a great storecupboard item for a last minute pud.

Everything works in a crumble! Try varying the topping by adding cinnamon (fantastic with apples/pears/plums) and get extra crunch and goodness by adding some oats. I sometime sprinkle brown sugar over the top as well.

I picked Rhubarb yesterday so making a crumble today.

Yum!

Rhubarb is my favourite

TeacupDrama · 12/05/2014 11:15

bananas won't work; neither to citrus fruits as the main fruit though as a taste wuith others can be ok, but most tarter fruits work well

my favourites

1, rhubarb ( occasionally with strawberries or raspberries) also nice with a touch of elderflower cordial
2, apple and blackberry

  1. plum or damson
Hoppinggreen · 12/05/2014 11:53

Do you think Mango would work with a bit if dedicated coconut in the topping? I think so but DH says it would be minging

CasperGutman · 12/05/2014 12:13

When I was a student the cafeteria in halls would put anything in a crumble. Most fruits worked well enough but I confirm that bananas, kiwi fruit and grapes did not!

squoosh · 12/05/2014 12:23

Rhubarb is the king of crumble fruits.
