What other fruits can you use for a crumble?

I made an apple crumble last night. First time since I was 13 years old! It was flipping lovely. My children loved it. Just had some for breakfast too Grin.

Now I have the crumble bug. Can I mix fruits? Which combinations are the best? What's the best fruit to use? Ripe or unripe?

Ok, so I say this on a lot of threads but I LOVE Hartleys Red Cherry filling in a crumble (I add some cinnamon to the crumble mix, or chocolate chips). It's actually heavenly, I want some now!

Plum
Black cherry (tinned ones in syrup)
Apple
Blackberry
Pear
Apricot
Peach

How did I forget the king of crumbles - rhubarb?!

thegreylady · 12/05/2014 12:30

Gooseberry made with tinned gooseberries in juice if you can't get fresh ones. Absolutely delicious but most fruits work well :)

squoosh · 12/05/2014 12:31

I didn't know you could get tinned gooseberries, I'll look out for them.

BigRedBall · 12/05/2014 12:35

God these all sound lovely! We have a fresh pineapple in the fruit bowl so I'll try that one next.

I normally make a nice banana toffee pudding for a "quick" pud, but I'll add crumble to my list of easy things for treats now!

BTW if you freeze the crumble mix for 10 minutes before you top the fruit it will be more crunchy. Similarly make a massive batch of the crumble topping and keep it in the freezer to use as and when needed.

Bananas do work in crumble!

I made a pineapple, mango and banana crumble with dark chocolate broken up into small pieces. The actual crumble had dessicated coconut in. I didn't add any sugar like I would with apples etc. It was lovely served with cream.

squoosh · 12/05/2014 12:44

That sounds lovely, Crazy, a splash of rum would set it off nicely!

CestTout · 12/05/2014 12:54

The chef at a pub that I work at made rhubarb and honey yesterday - was lovely!

Groovee · 12/05/2014 12:55

Apple and Raspberry is lovely but I adore Plum crumble.

PunkHedgehog · 12/05/2014 13:03

I think mango on its own might be to squidgy, but mixed with something else like apple it should work fine.

PunkHedgehog · 12/05/2014 13:04

Bother.

Too, not to.

SaggyAndLucy · 12/05/2014 13:15

Gooseberry. End of.

CrazyDesire · 12/05/2014 13:21

Rhubarb and honey sounds nice.

Rum would be a nice addition Squoosh, though would the alcohol be cooked off ?

diddl · 12/05/2014 13:26

Oooh no!

Pineapple has to be Upsidedown pudding, not crumble!Grin

LilyBobtail · 12/05/2014 14:09

Plums - especially cheap ones that don't taste that good raw. Cook them first with a bit of cinnamon and sugar and they are gorgeous - tart and sweet and juicy. Mmm.

ilovemywestie · 12/05/2014 14:25

Banana in crumble is delicious! I made Rhubarb and banana crumble yesterday and of course its even better with a dollop of custard on top!

CarbeDiem · 12/05/2014 14:29

Banana's most definitely work.

My favourite crumbles are
Rhubarb
Strawberry
Pear and banana

BigRedBall · 12/05/2014 14:35

Pineapple, banana and mango? I'm making it! With vanilla icecream I think, yummy!

Rhubarb and orange, the orange being the juice and zest added to the rhubarb. Pear and blackberry, apple and blackberry, and gooseberry. Use Agave nectar to sweeten the fruit, as it has a low glycaemic index. I use golden caster sugar in the crumble bit.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 12/05/2014 16:09

Apple with juice of an orange and a smidgeon of ginger my MIL made, delicious.

I cheat sometimes and use packet crumble mix but crumbling Weetabix on top just before serving can give it a crunchier topping.
