So handy, so comfortable, so versatile, so good at hiding a multitude of sins........ Sad

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 11/05/2014 14:17

Ds1 is 14 and has just started going out with his first girlfriend. I feel very uncool. Blush

SaucyJack · 11/05/2014 16:00

Joe Browns is not cool, sorry. The clothes are nice enough in themselves, but their whole "lifestyle brand" look is far too contrived to be truly cool IMO. Just look at the names of the outfits- "perfect sitting in a pub garden and pretending you don't have kids" dress "ideal top for first post-divorce date at a vegan restaurant" top yadda yadda yadda.

Which is a shame, because as a thirtysomething mum and former Goth I'm exactly in their target demographic.

knickernicker · 11/05/2014 16:05

Pipbin - I think you answered your own question.

splendide · 11/05/2014 16:06

I'm a fat pregnant short arse and wear nothing but long tops and dresses over maternity jeans in my own time. I'm unrepentant.

At work I wear dresses, tights and boots. Not sure what I'm going to do when it gets a bit warmer :(

Genuinely genuinely though, what should I be wearing? I look disgusting in any trousers where you can actually see the waist band.

MaryWestmacott · 11/05/2014 16:17

Of course it's not a cool look! It was cool for about a month about 5 years ago, and then those of us with non flat tummies and arses noticed that it was a flattering look, so started wearing it, it instantly stopped being cool. White stuff have never been cool - except in a "cool for a 35 year old" sort of way.

But this is fine, it's still a flattering and comfy look, it's a more stylish than tracky bottoms and a baggy t-shirt.

You don't have to be cool. It's ok not to be, sometimes I want to dress up, other times I just want to be comfy and presentable.

smartypants1000 · 11/05/2014 16:20

Are people seriously worried about looking cool? Don't think I've ever been cool. I don't own skinny jeans and never plan to. Wear the clothes you like!

Caitlin17 · 11/05/2014 16:31

I'd never heard of Joe Brown's. The dresses are okish but a bit cheap looking and too short; sort of downmarket Brora or Orla Keily or even Cath Kidston.

Is it the same sort of concept as Jack Wills? I.e taking a look that came naturally to one group of people and putting it all in one place for people who like it but can't be bothered/aren't comfortable trawling around second-hand shops to get it? (Critique of Jack Wills courtesy of my son who passionately hates it for reason stated)

Psycobabble · 11/05/2014 16:33

With skinny jeans of leggings is a good look I think certainly better than flashing half your bits off when you've not the figure for it ... Not referring to the OP just an observation!

SirChenjin · 11/05/2014 16:35

Wear what you like and sod everyone else, is my mantra. Say it loud, say it proud.

Joules68 · 11/05/2014 16:37

Oh my! that white stuff website is awful. And expensive. The tunics looked odd, didn't look much beyond them..

HillyHolbrook · 11/05/2014 16:41

It's never been 'cool' where I am at least. It's definitely considered a mumsy look, but is bloody comfy and flattering for most. It doesn't suit me as I'm big chested, wide hipped and small waisted so I need to wear more fitted things to avoid looking like a box. I wear what suits me and so should everyoneGrin Enjoy your tunics for as long as you like!

I work in the fashion industry and I don't wear what's 'trendy.' They haven't fired me yetWink I love fashion but I'm a fan of wearing classic, versatile pieces instead of falling all over what ever print or bizarre cut of skirt is in for this season. It means I look stylish all the time I hope and my wardrobe never goes out of date and never ends up looking frumpy and out of fashion.

SecretWitch · 11/05/2014 16:43

I am 4'11 and not thin. I will wear what flatters me and give two hoots about fashion. I am clean, hair in good shape and put my slap on. I also work for the police department, ain't no one caring about my fashion sense.

EduardoBarcelona · 11/05/2014 16:44

NO NO NO never were cool or flattering

magpiegin · 11/05/2014 16:45

I agree, I have never thought of it as 'cool'. I would say it was what women aged 40+ would wear on the school run. Yes, I know that probably sounds sexist but is what springs to mind.

kippersmum · 11/05/2014 17:29

I am wearing a short dress / long tunic with black leggings today, as I do most days. I have never been cool in my life & at nearly 40 with 2 kids I'm not going to start worrying about it now! :)

I couldn't give a shit what it considered cool or not. I wear what I like and suits me and don't give a toss what other people think.

IdealistAndProudOfIt · 11/05/2014 17:36

Couldn't care less. I like them. I'm wearing them. End of, except when I can't buy what I want any more and have to spend hrs hunting for simplest thing... Grrrr...

I often think of fashion as a bunch of weirdos getting drunk and sniggering to each other round a table about 'hurr hurr hurr... How stupid can we make people look now ' (especially thinking of those stupid 'the skirt-trouser and even more the stupid name!).

LtEveDallas · 11/05/2014 17:40

God I live in tunics/kaftan tops and jeans. In fact I have been bemoaning that my favourite ones are now starting to disintegrate they are that old and well worn (my very fave is the same age as DD - 9 Shock)

I'm having a really hard time finding new ones - apparently the best places are Indian tailors selling salwar kameez (sp?). I'm seriously considering buying some and taking them up myself. The colours I've seen are amazing.

AbbeyBartlet · 11/05/2014 17:42

I only bought my first tunic tops a few weeks ago - I wear them over trousers for work. I am not bothered about fashion tbh, I just wear what fits!

noddyholder · 11/05/2014 17:44

I think it's unflattering

Bodicea · 11/05/2014 17:47

I am confused about this look. Never seen any around myself but might be a look I am interested in hoiks down top over mum tum
Can anyone point me in direction of some examples.

Aspiringhuman · 11/05/2014 17:48

I don't care about cool, comfort all the way.

usuallysuspect · 11/05/2014 17:51

Trust me, if you have a muffin top like mine, they are flattering.

hamptoncourt · 11/05/2014 17:52

I still haven't got over the fact we cannot wear tight white t shirts under strappy dresses.......Time Warp

RoganJosh · 11/05/2014 17:54

Boadicea, this is the sort of style I would think of when someone says 'tunic'.

Not helping the frumpy worry with a Wallis link.

RoganJosh · 11/05/2014 17:55

Bodicea, even.
