Can anyone briefly summarise or pm me?

Thanks

There was a lot of speculation on the thread IIRC.

RowanMumsnet · 09/05/2014 12:26

Hello

We had a bit of a confab about it late last night and decided that it just wasn't in the spirit of the site - lots of it was just a bit nasty. We're not too keen on full-on sleb-bashing bitchfests (and going forwards will probably be more willing to think about deleting them entirely, although you're right that this isn't always what we've done so far).

We think it's fair enough to discuss something news-worthy that's been said or done, but pure character assassination just doesn't seem very edifying tbh.

These things are always a bit suck-it-and-see, shades of grey though; if something seems to be genuinely good-humoured we might decide it's OK. So as with most things it's all down to the individual thread.

Joylin we've deleted your post for repeating some of the nasty stuff from the other thread, but FWIW Lily Allen hasn't been in touch with us at all about this - it was reported (quite a few times) by other MNers.

hiddenhome · 09/05/2014 12:40

I think Lily Allen is really pretty, but she swears a bit too much and Ds2 keeps asking what she's just sung Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/05/2014 13:14

I was really enjoying the thread tbh Sad can't flipping say anything these days! Wink

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 09/05/2014 13:23

I completely agree with HQ here. I am not the type of person who ever goes anywhere near 'sleb freds as I am not interested but bitchy 'character assasination'? Of a singer? Saying you don't like her latest album, or clothes range is all very well but really?

I like Lily Allen, love her music and enjoyed hearing new stuff on Chris Evans' show last week.

MorningTimes · 09/05/2014 13:27

I agree also. It was very teenage & bitchy.

Mintyy · 09/05/2014 14:01

I don't understand how you can say that you don't agree with the way a person is conducting themselves in public without it sounding bitchy.

The conduct of Lily Allen, Miley Cyrus, Peaches Geldof, Beyonce, Taylor Swift et al really wouldn't interest me at all were it not for the fact that I have children who are or will be interested in her type in the future.

There was an interesting discussion to be had about LA concerning her public opining on weight, motherhood, feminism, sexism, highly sexually charged performances by stars who attract mainly under 18 fans, but it had to go because some people thought it was "bitchy".

Have you seen her output on Twitter?

I really don't understand this Rowan. If certain posts are slanderous or libellous or whatever, then delete them, but the whole thread?

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/05/2014 14:07

I agree.

Scarletohello · 09/05/2014 14:18

Glad the thread has gone, read some of it thought it was vile, bitchy and mean spirited. Felt like a form of cyber bullying to me.

Mintyy · 09/05/2014 14:36

Such a simplistic argument! It must be possible to discuss celebrities or people in the public eye, who broadcast their opinions with the intention of having them heard by the general public, without only posting positive comments.

Really, the Peter Andre threads have to go if that one went.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2014 15:36

The PA threads are quite tongue in cheek and good humoured in comparison. Mainly about him loving his kids, being orange, and making awful music.

Musetta · 09/05/2014 16:09

The site is getting stupidly Po faced this days-threads deleted willy-nilly.

LadyRabbit · 09/05/2014 16:31

So, let me get this straight. It is perfectly acceptable to come on mumsnet and slag off people who exist in RL because they're anonymous (MILs, SILs, ex-Hs etc), but because LA is a public figure (who fully knows how the media game works) it is not acceptable?

Hmm.

I bet you some of the people who complained are those who will quite happily slag off someone IRL on here under the guise of anonymity.

Venom is venom, no?

I am of the school of 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all', but there's something a bit eh? about this.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2014 16:32

RL people are not likely to sue Mumsnet presumably?

Nancy66 · 09/05/2014 16:52

God, if there's one word I'd like to ban from MN it's VILE.

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2014 17:27

It's not that hard to understand. If you make libellous comments about an identifiable person you could be sued and so could the site.

That goes for a pop singer or your MIL but a pop singer has more means to do it.

But the 'not in the spirit of Mumsnet' deletion message is pathetic. The Katie Price thread remains. And presumably so will others. What's the difference?

One or two posts were libellous and they should have gone. Some of them were spiteful, but I think that says more about the individual posters than Lily Allen, so I'd prefer them to stand.

I don't agree with the OP's POV on Allen but I do agree that her thread should have stood. Allen's actions are a legitimate target for debate.

My opinion is that I'm generally in favour but that she doesn't always think things through - like making a feminist statement by slapping black women's arses.

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2014 17:28

BTW, that's not a request to have the Katie Price thread zapped.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2014 17:30

Strictly speaking this thread is a TAAT isn't it?

LadyRabbit · 09/05/2014 17:35

But the 'not in the spirit of Mumsnet' deletion message is pathetic. The Katie Price thread remains. And presumably so will others. What's the difference?

^ Precisely this ^

Also I can't get over the piety of some posters. What do they think AIBU is? A tea party?!

The potential for libel notwithstanding, I am taken aback by the hypocrisy of MN HQ on this one. Is it because LA is white, middle class secretly quite posh and Katie Price is an ex topless model and not safely middle class? (I don't want to use the ch-v word, it's really grim.)

JohnFarleysRuskin · 09/05/2014 17:40

A sad older housewife?!
Crikey.
I thought she was a singer, quite young, with two young kids. Different perceptions eh.
I'm sure whoever wrote that has done AMAZING things with their life.

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2014 17:40

Strictly speaking this thread is a TAAT isn't it?

Not even strictly speaking.

Is that banned under MN rules or a convention formulated by users?

I don't see a problem with TAAT, especially in these circumstances.

But then I don't see a problem with 'disablist' language - or rather I do, but I think we should thrash out what terms are acceptable to most users and the site owners, rather than hitting the report button like a crazed lab rat in search of food.

Someone started a debate about that in Site Stuff but it died a death.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2014 17:43

I did think TAATs weren't allowed by MN.

Mintyy · 09/05/2014 17:50

If all threads about threads are automatically zapped then we'll never get anywhere.

But, really, this thread is about what HQ will allow to stand in terms of discussing people in the public eye. It doesn't matter if it is LA or anyone else.

"Not being in the spirit of the site" is a vague and wishy-washy term and, actually, I want to discuss news and current affairs on here. Its one of the great things about being on a discussion forum like this ... you get lots of people's opinions which you wouldn't har if it was just you and your mates down the pub.

OP posts:
FreckledLeopard · 09/05/2014 17:55

Good God. Why on earth are HQ starting to censor stuff if it's not sufficiently supportive and fluffy?

Do we all have to be nice to each other and supportive of womankind in general?

Nennypops · 09/05/2014 17:58

I never know why people get so worked up about slebs. It often happens - and not just here - that people post messages displaying out and out vicious hatred for some sleb who they've never met, are never likely to meet, and has never done anything that harms them in any way, shape or form. Why, FFS?
