To use one chicken breast to feed two adults?

Or expect two chicken breasts to feed us both, twice?

They are proper breasts, full sized, not 'portions'

I was going to use one for fajitas, and one for curry. DH does have a healthy appetite but surely this would be enough?

I am trying to cost cut. I'd normally use two for each meal.

corus It's a wholesale place not far from me called BM. Bargain Meats I'm assuming it stands for. It's really good produce.

I thought so too before I went, the meat is excellent and good price. The lamb and mint burgers make me drool... and I don't even like lamb!

See I always buy free range, orgnaic meat from local farm. It's about £5 for 2 chicken breasts. So a meal for 4 wouldn't be 4 breasts as £10 meat each time

I wouldn't want to get cheaper meat though

UncleT · 06/05/2014 21:01

Just say no to turkey!

Sure it's cheaper, but unfortunately the reason why is that it tastes like total crap. I'd rather have less chicken than more turkey.

Our local butcher does meat packs. Got one delivered the other week -£20 or £25 for a whole chicken, 500g diced chicken, 4 massive chicken breasts and 4 packs x 2 breasts with various sauces (piri piri, garlic and herb etc)

WeAllHaveWings · 06/05/2014 21:16

We get similar to tequila, box of large chicken breasts 5kg, 20-25 breasts for £22.50 in our local farm shop. Roughly £1 each.

The breasts are huge and I defrost/cook 3 at a time, 2 for a meal for dh, me and ds(10), and 1 for sandwiches and a little bit left over for recall training the pup!

Mince, diced rump, sausages etc are also much cheaper and tastier, really worth finding a good farm shop and stocking up. We travel 25 miles to ours every 6 weeks or so and stock up.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 06/05/2014 21:20

Yeah I bag them up and defrost when needed, last us about 1.5months because we're a bit greedy and have one each. We eat quite a bit of grilled chicken and veg though so they're good healthy meals.

I've saved sooo much money getting them rather than supermarket stuff. Was costing me £5.60ish for the cheapest chicken breasts!

WilsonFrickett · 06/05/2014 21:23

I always buy free range chicken and aim to make it organic if I can, so that usually means stocking up when prices are down. Our butcher is fab but the chicken isn't free range so I have to rely on the supermarkets for chicken, which does feel counter - intuitive. I'd expect 4 chicken thighs to feed 3 of us, with probably enough for a scanty lunch for me the next day, depending on what the meal was - so that's 380g or so of meat for two full adult portions and two slightly smaller lunch/DS portions.

Probably no leftovers if DH has cycled to work and back though! Smile

Definitely fine for fajitas.

If I'm doing a pre payday curry Grin I bulk it out with peppers, onion, butternut squash & chickpeas.

DH is a chef and has a massive appetite but even he doesn't usually complain.

hiccupgirl · 06/05/2014 21:35

We use 1 chicken breast between 2 of us for a stir fry with loads of veg and noodles. But would have 1 each for a meal with mash and veg.
