To use one chicken breast to feed two adults?

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/05/2014 18:30

Or expect two chicken breasts to feed us both, twice?

They are proper breasts, full sized, not 'portions'

I was going to use one for fajitas, and one for curry. DH does have a healthy appetite but surely this would be enough?

I am trying to cost cut. I'd normally use two for each meal.

One chicken breast is one adult portion in my house

TinklyLittleLaugh · 06/05/2014 19:21

Ah I see. Well a quarter pounder is not a snack in our house.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 06/05/2014 19:24

This is quite interesting because I would say we eat a lot of meat; we have maybe one fish day and one veggie day a week. But perhaps our meat portion sizes are smaller then average.

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/05/2014 19:25

So the fact that they weigh 463g indicates they are nore than adequate? Good!!

I do have smaller portions than DH. He can eat as much as he likes and never gains weight. Envy

For me, I don't see the point in having a tiny bit of meat and then having to 'bulk things out'.
I'd rather have a chicken dish one day and a veg dish the next day.

So in your case I'd probably make vegetable fajitas and chicken curry rather than splitting the meat between to two dishes.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 06/05/2014 19:27

I buy 25 chicken breasts for £20. They're brilliant, we grill them and no water or anything comes out unlike the supermarket variety which shrink to nothing.

Hulababy · 06/05/2014 19:27

I normally allow 100-150g of meat or fish per person when cooking, though I tend to allow the upper range for white meat/fish and the lower range for red meat.

The chicken breasts mentioned do appear to be very large - so can see how - of they are over 200g each - it would be possible to have one shared between 2 people, when used in something like a curry or fajitas

Tinkly You made pasta bake, of course everyone is stuffed!

When I was trying to cut our budget back a bit I cut back on meat like this. I like my meat so it was really noticable to me (and my husband it later turned out) but we got through it and share one big breast and one little breast between us, padded out with vegies or pasta. There's always left-overs for him when he gets home from work.

YANBU, I do the same. I have a friend who pounds one very thin and feeds two adults and three (very) small children with one.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 06/05/2014 19:35

sykadelic yes but I reckon it is really the protein not the carbs that fills you up. Veggie pasta bake and everyone is scouring the cupboards an hour later.

Last night we went out for dinner. I had a 10oz steak, so 250g maybe, the teenage DDs had a chicken breast wrapped in bacon. It was a massive amount of meat, none of us could finish it (fortunately DH and DS were on hand to Hoover up). Like I say, I am surprised that people would consider this "regular" eating.

Blu · 06/05/2014 19:37

It would be loads in a risotto.

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/05/2014 19:39

Blimey corus where do you get your thighs from?? 4 weighing 650g??

yum yum

familygermsareok · 06/05/2014 19:50

One (medium supermarket size) chicken breast does 2 adults in this house. Plus one large onion, half a box of mushrooms and a jar of supermarket curry sauce served with rice. It's a regular quickie on a busy night for us and we both have pretty big appetites.

Lol corus massive thighs and breasts in the same thread! Will lookout for those.

Just had my fajitas. I had two with salad and it was plenty for me. And i do like to eat.

DH will have 3 or 4 plus pudding.

I'd just put in a tin of drained kidney beans too, about 30p if you buy a supermarket value brand. I actually prefer the taste of things like beans and pulses though so may not work for everyone.
