To like vintage and shabby chic

I know it's not 'cool' anymore and everyone's so over it, but I still love my mis-matched crockery and jugs of flowers and colourful cushions and painted chest of drawers etc etc etc etc.

AIBU to think that Vintage rocks and to not want to re-do my house in chrome and blonde and cream and all that calm and neutral stuff that in no way reflects my chaotic state of mind?

You just carry on being YOU Summerbreezing lady. My house is full of shite that nobody finds "fashionable" any longer (assuming they ever did, ha ha).

mrsbucketxx · 06/05/2014 13:01

i love it too, why not ethically its the right thing to do.

maybe im out of touch too

squoosh · 06/05/2014 13:02

Stick with it if you like it. Just pretend you're not in when the Style Police come a knockin'.

It'll come back into fashion in 40 years time or so anyway.

beccajoh · 06/05/2014 13:03

I can't bloody stand it, but if you like it then keep it! Do you require social-media approval of your taste in decor?

Bonsoir · 06/05/2014 13:04

I like antiques and vintage, but in a fairly minimalist way and mixed judiciously with modern furniture in natural materials, velvet, silks, gold and silver - I'm no chrome/leather/high gloss finishes girl.

You can always update your vintage by going more minimalist than cottagey.

DoJo · 06/05/2014 13:16

It would simply never occur to me to change the way I decorate my house in order to keep up with 'fashion'. Are there really people who redecorate everything to have the latest look?

Famzilla · 06/05/2014 13:19

Is there an in/out "fashion" for home decor too?

Jesus Christ. I'm so out of touch.

Bonsoir · 06/05/2014 13:19

Yes - change is good for people. No point getting stuck in the past.

mrsbucketxx · 06/05/2014 13:23

yes there's house style trends i think you can change a room completely with a new wall colour or accent colour

UnderIce · 06/05/2014 13:23

My SIL redecorates her home completely roughly every 12 months in accordance with whatever guff she's read in Homes & Gardens/Good Housekeeping/Interiors. Whole living room sets are binned/given away on a regular basis because they're "naff" now.

I take great delight in patching up the same distressed leather sofa year in year out specifically to annoy her. (Disclaimer...I don't really, I just don't care enough to replace it).

Dfg15 · 06/05/2014 13:23

If you like it then surely that it all that matters. I get fed up reading about whats in/out in home decor. As I've said many times before, if everyone had the same taste in everything the world would be a VERY boring place.

emmelinelucas · 06/05/2014 13:26

I am old, and have been vintage/shabby chic for donkeys years.
I havent bought any new furniture, ever. Apart from my mattress, obv.
My DIL thinks my old, dusty crumbling house is amazing.
It is an accumulation of laziness (leaves vases of flowers to dry, never touch up paint) that's what it is.
I feel quite trendy, now.
Smile

I actually quite like it I think it's the "mock" shabby shit in Next and BHS that sent it into over kill and made it seem naff. I think true vintage stuff is different.

Viviennemary · 06/05/2014 13:28

If you like it then have it regardless of what anyone else thinks. The worse thing is to jump on the latest bandwagon whether you like it or not. I didn't much like the craze for stencilling a number of years ago but still felt I should follow the trend. Now I get what I like.

Oh, I'd forgotten about "stencilling". An old friend of mine went stencil crazy. Every wall, every surface had some stencil shit on it.

She also went apeshit for dado rails, fake cornices and picture rails. I pity the fool who moved into her house after her, trying to get a plain, self coloured minimalist wall back!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 06/05/2014 13:30

I know what you mean, I'm sick of reading about how something is so 'over' now. I don't care if it is, I like it! I prefer to think that I'm a little more individual and not really some mindless fashion victim, and I'm not about to ditch stuff I love to fit in with someone else's fashion.

squoosh · 06/05/2014 13:31

I was in a house recently which had that very 90's look of two different wallpapers separated by a paper border. Hadn't seen that in forever.

I can't understand people who chuck everything out and start afresh every year, I like to alter things in a more gradual fashion.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 06/05/2014 13:32

Ooh MrsD that's really pretty. Smile

HavantGuard · 06/05/2014 13:32

Decorate in a way that makes you happy. The only time you need to worry what other people think is when you're selling your house and buyers might be out off by your collection of life size David Hasselhoff cut outs or the giant vulva painting in the dining room (see other thread.)

BomChickaMeowMeow · 06/05/2014 13:33

I agree. The stuff I like seems to go in any age anyway. I like a kind of "masculine", or slightly "professor's study" style I suppose. Leather sofas, no over fussy decor or detail, some nice pieces of furniture, lots of books, a piano, a real fire, a decent rug, not too many ornaments and trinkets. Cosy but functional, and you don't have to worry too much about spilling things or leaving cup rings where you've been working/reading etc.

Yes, OP, YABVU to like this and are going on my shit list immediately.

Seriously, no, it's your home. You mustn't decorate it in line with anyone else's opinions and tastes other than your own. Otherwise, YABU.

I go past some of the houses on our estate, it's quite "naice", round here, but when I nose into the windows, they all look very similar. You can see the process: new house, advance to Next and drop £2000 all in one go. There you go. Identikit house style. They need to let things evolve more organically. you should see the fucking state of our house
