To like vintage and shabby chic

I know it's not 'cool' anymore and everyone's so over it, but I still love my mis-matched crockery and jugs of flowers and colourful cushions and painted chest of drawers etc etc etc etc.

AIBU to think that Vintage rocks and to not want to re-do my house in chrome and blonde and cream and all that calm and neutral stuff that in no way reflects my chaotic state of mind?

Mrs D that room is gorgeous!

BomChickaMeowMeow · 06/05/2014 13:39

I go past some of the houses on our estate, it's quite "naice", round here, but when I nose into the windows, they all look very similar. You can see the process: new house, advance to Next and drop £2000 all in one go.

You've hit the nail on the head there.

BomChickaMeowMeow · 06/05/2014 13:40

MrsD, that's kind of the antithesis of what I posted, but I respect the fact it's your own taste and not bland!

mrsbucketxx · 06/05/2014 13:42

There is a fair amount of unidentified 'stuff' squished on the walls

that's what magic erasers are for

my home looks like a gallery (probably cause we own one) but i dont care do what you like.

Summerbreezing · 06/05/2014 13:42

I saw some programme last year where Kirstie Allsopp was advising people on decorating a room in their house and she managed to convince some couple that the sixties was very 'now', and did their sitting room up in 'Aunty Jean's front room chic'. It was bloody awful.

That room looks lovely bomchick. Inviting.

Wow, Bom just WOW.
Mrs - how pretty. It looks so nice to sit in on a dusky september evening perhaps
Makes me think of muslin dresses trimmed with lace.

CaffeinatedKitten · 06/05/2014 13:57

I'm not a fan of the shabby shitchic look, but mostly because it's now impossible to find a piece of second hand furniture that hasn't had three litres of Annie Sloan sloshed over it:(

LaurieFairyCake · 06/05/2014 13:57

I love shabby chic, whole place is Annie Sloaned to death Grin

My shed has 2 wrought iron antique sofas in it covered in patchwork throws.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/05/2014 13:58

Worst cross post ever! Grin

CaffeinatedKitten · 06/05/2014 13:58

My house is barely controlled chaos with a sprinkle of toddler and cat debris. One day I will decorate... There will be colour. So far that's as far as I have planned:o

CaffeinatedKitten · 06/05/2014 13:59

Laurie:o

You've sloaned your own. At least you're not trying to flog it at a five hundred percent markup when all I want is an untainted sideboard:o

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 06/05/2014 13:59

Ha ha Laurie Grin I luffs my annie sloane sloshed dining table

Summerbreezing · 06/05/2014 14:01

I admit I don't like a place where the shabby chicness is overdone and looks like a stage set. But I do like bits and pieces around that remind of people or places, and splashes of colour and always feel a bit depressed by a room where everything matches perfectly and looks as if it was all bought on the same day in the same shop. But people who like that style would probably find my rooms a bit shabby and make-do.

You can keep your own sense of style and give a nod to trends. The idea of replacing everything en masse once a year on the basis of what magazines say is 'in' seems bizarre to me.

These are eye wateringly, stupidly pricy but if you made something similar yourself they cover the taxidermy (shudder) trend, they could have a shabby chic frame and soft pastel colours or use a dark wood frame and earth colours to fit in with the study look of Bomchick. You might just hate them though!

I've gone minimalist at the moment, as youngest fool dog eats everything he can reach. Everything.

tethersend · 06/05/2014 14:06

Vintage and shabby-chic are two separate things in my mind.

My house is decorated with 60s and 70s stuff. And not in a subtle way Grin

BomChickaMeowMeow · 06/05/2014 14:07

I've realised until this thread what I was calling shabby chic was completely incorrect- on Googling all the rooms look the same style as MrsD's. I would have called that style "uber-feminine/romantic".

I thought shabby chic was like, an Audrey Hepburn style vintage black dress that was a bit worn around the edges, but looks so cool. Or any sort of decor that's a bit old and worn but so classic it looks very now.

So the only argument I would have with it is that as a genre, it seems to be very misnamed. There isn't anything remotely shabby about it and the chicness is...arguable.

stooshe · 06/05/2014 14:08

Well, I am impressed with the interiors of BOTH photos shown. I'm Ebaying and saving for a redecoration.
OP, I loved shabby chic, but knew that I couldn't implement it in my home. Sometimes I feel like Barbara Cartland, more time I'm like Ena Sharples, so it doesn't "suit me".
Eff the interior style police, I say.

Summerbreezing · 06/05/2014 14:09

Vabby chic maybe?

OP posts:
BomChickaMeowMeow · 06/05/2014 14:09

Yes - Barbara Cartland. That's who it reminds me of.

Summerbreezing · 06/05/2014 14:11

I've just googled and I think I'm more vintage than shabby chic. I don't really like frills and flounces or too much unrelieved pastel.

Actually I'm 'make-do and can occasionally afford a bit of Cath Kidston chic', really.
