To like vintage and shabby chic

I know it's not 'cool' anymore and everyone's so over it, but I still love my mis-matched crockery and jugs of flowers and colourful cushions and painted chest of drawers etc etc etc etc.

AIBU to think that Vintage rocks and to not want to re-do my house in chrome and blonde and cream and all that calm and neutral stuff that in no way reflects my chaotic state of mind?

Online there seems to be little distinction.

Summerbreezing · 06/05/2014 14:21

I think there is a bit Bom. Shabby chic seems to be more dainty and floral and pastel while vintage is a little more muted with bright splashes of colour here and there. Not that I have a clue really.

I love our 1930s/40s utiltarian bookcase from DH's gran's house. Had it not come in 6 parts I would not have been able to get it up the stairs by myself the other day. Couldn't do that with my Ikea one!

BomChickaMeowMeow · 06/05/2014 14:22

Yes there is a slightly difference, but not as much as I thought there would be, Summer.

BomChickaMeowMeow · 06/05/2014 14:25

Utility, not utilitarian, I meant. Though it is that as well. Almost certainly 1940s, having Googled.

I like a kind of 1950's look complete with drinks trolley and tons of art on the walls.

I love the shed laurie. It's the kind of thing I'd like (or need) eventually, in order to escape the paraphernalia and mess of 3 men.

My house is a mixture of turn of the century (this century),1970s, 1950s, 1930s, and Ikea. More 'I can't be fucked' than Vintage Chic.

MrsSteptoe · 06/05/2014 15:18

DH bought a table with a metal frame and a drop-in top in auction the other day to resell (see MN nickname).

I would have loved to take the top and paint it black and decoupage it with flowers. Or possibly fish. That's as naff as it comes but I still love it. It just feels homely and cosy. Don't much care whether it's fashionable or not.

You stick to what makes you happy, OP. It'll serve you better than trying to be fashionable for the benefit of other people.

Summerbreezing · 06/05/2014 15:37

Thanks everyone. I wasn't seriously thinking of redecorating. Just curious about other people's opinions as the woman across the road has yet another skip in her drive and is giving her house it's annual complete doing up. I can't understand that. She gets rid of everything and does it all up again. Surely a home should develop organically over time with things acquiring a sentimental significance, or people having their favourite comfy chair etc. It's also nice when grandchildren visit a house and see bits and pieces that used to be there when mummy or daddy were small.

But each to their own I suppose. Sad

I think both is fine but shouldn't be exclusive to a room. I don't like 'themes' and agree with the above that houses need to grow organically with sentimental stuff. Its fine to have vintage pieces or a bit of shabby chic furniture / florals as long as thats not allyou have. I think otherwise it can look a little forced. I feel that both vintage and shabby chic need to be mixed with modern stuff too.

I'm not surprised people change their rooms so often. Looking around the home stores I feel ornaments etc have become very cheap and disposable, much like on trend disposable fashion that will only last for a season.

Chocolateisa7adayfood · 06/05/2014 17:17

I think home decor should be outside of fashion and you should just acquire things that you really like. My home is a total mishmash of things from Victorian to present day but I like to think of it as homely and eclectic.

My house has no style apart from the I'm-only-living-here-temporarily-while-we-find-a-house non-style. It's seriously student dump meets hoarders' paradise in here. Shocking.

Like your houses Bomchick and Laurie!

Summerbreezing · 06/05/2014 18:43

That is definitely and absolutely Vintage LaQueen - I think. Haven't a clue really.
