to make a spag bol with half beef mince and half turkey mince?

We have students staying with us tomorrow night and I was going to do a spag bol (for 8 - four students and us). I've just looked in the freezer and some bugger (that would be my DH) has used half the kg bag of mince I had. I have such a busy day tomorrow and could do without having to factor in a shop visit (as well as the money, we've got hardly any until DH is paid on Thurs).

I have a 400g packet of turkey mince. Would a spag bol made from both taste odd? If it was just my lot, I'd have no qualms in giving them one of my odd concoctions! lol

Sounds horrible
I'd rather use 1 meat and bulk out with beans if lentils and serve rice not pasta

Canus · 05/05/2014 20:16

Cook the hell out of it. Add loads of garlic and oregano.

No one will be any the wiser.

Charlie97 · 05/05/2014 20:24

Absolutely no problem at all, they won't know, turkey mince ads flavour, beef mince colour......... They will say this is lovely

!

CrispyHedgeHog · 05/05/2014 20:28

I would. I usually make it with half beef and half pork. It's lovely

TequilaMockingbirdy · 05/05/2014 20:28

People do half beef and half pork so don't see the problem with this

CasperGutman · 05/05/2014 20:30

It will be fine. Many Italian recipes use a mixture of meats. I've seen pork or veal mince used, either of which is lighter than beef.

I'd rather have a sauce made well with half turkey than a lumpy, watery and badly-seasoned one made with all beef any day.

steff13 · 05/05/2014 20:30

When you say "mince," do you mean ground beef and ground turkey? If so, I don't think it's a problem.

cheepsskram · 05/05/2014 20:40

you guys are legends! Thanks. I shall defrost both and just keep schtum to DH. :)

I may do it in the slow cooker then add shit loads of garlic. :)

Steff13 - yes, I do mean the ground stuff. :)

As long as it's well seasoned, I'm sure it'll taste great.

Janethegirl · 05/05/2014 20:49

Sounds good with any meat :)

Summerbreezing · 05/05/2014 21:30

I have often made spag bol with turkey mince. The eat is quite bland as low in fat so just add extra flavouring. With beef added in you will get extra flavour anyway so with a few herbs and some garlic it should be lovely.

Summerbreezing · 05/05/2014 21:31

The Meat is quite bland I meant.

WillGardnersNose · 05/05/2014 21:40

I do half pork half beef usually. You can't tell the difference.

UncleT · 05/05/2014 21:44

YABVU. Turkey sucks - dreadful meat.

EverythingsDozy · 05/05/2014 21:49

I'm going to show my stupid side here but can someone clarify the difference between ground meat and mince?

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 05/05/2014 21:51

There isn't any difference Dozy, mince is what we call ground meat in the UK :)

As for the OP, it'll be fine, just use an extra beef stock cube of you feel the need, but I wouldn't.

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 05/05/2014 21:51

I wouldn't add the extra cube I mean, I'd certainly make it with the half and half!

OscarWinningActress · 05/05/2014 21:55

I can't articulate why but this is just wrong. Beef and Pork together = OK. Beef and Poultry = YUK. Turkey mince is really lean and has a very different texture, I don't think they'd blend together properly.

EverythingsDozy · 05/05/2014 21:56

Oh okay! I'm not as stupid as I thought I was then!

senua · 05/05/2014 21:58

You'll never guess what we had for dinner tonight. It was fab - probably because I didn't have to cook it, DD did it!Grin
Cook it forever and no-one will know.

ViviDeBeauvoir · 05/05/2014 21:59

YABU

Did you not see the cottage pie thread?
You should be able to make 18 portions of spag bol with that much beef mince! Enough veg/lentils/woodshavings added and it might even go further! [Wink]

Ellypoo · 05/05/2014 22:28

I def would, add a couple of beef oxo cubes though and some Hendersons relish/lee & perrins, will be lovely!

cheepsskram · 05/05/2014 22:31

What cottage pie thread? Sounds interesting. :)

Both minces are out of the freezer, defrosting for tomorrow. ;)

Turkey is awful. I would bulk it out with vegetables/dried beans/lentils anything but not turkey.

(I haven't eaten turkey in almost 40 years. I've never heard of turkey mince)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 05/05/2014 22:40

We have turkey mince often; I make a turkey chilli out of it and it's really nice; nicer than with beef. Loads of chilli beans and peppers.

I think Italian cooks recommend using both pork and beef in bolognaise. I'm going to try that.
