I'm 7 wks pg and we will tell people when we are ready. Asking questions like that are just awkward and you won't get a straight response. MIL and GMIL just stayed silent, thankfully. FFS. AIBU?

YANBU. Early pg hormone rage + tactless old fart = he should be grateful he wasn't told to fuck off. What did you say? Oh, and congratulations.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 05/05/2014 18:48

I think you may be being a wee bit U, especially if you normally do drink in their company. It's not necessarily a snide way of asking if you're pregnant, it's more likely to be a thoughtless, throwaway observation.

Though it can only get worse over the next few weeks. Grin

Martorana · 05/05/2014 18:49

If you normally drink alcohol and suddenly don't, generally people will ask why not. That's life I'm afraid.

PilauMice · 05/05/2014 18:50

Muttered something about not fancying a drink. Now when we do tell them he'll be all 'OOh I knew for ages'. All right clever clogs! Grrr.

Thank you btw for your understanding!

If you're not drinking, people think you're pregnant, that's just how it is. Annoying yes.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 05/05/2014 18:51

If he doesnt know you are pregnant then of course you are being unreasonable! How is he to know that it's awkward if he doesnt know! Stop being silly.

PilauMice · 05/05/2014 18:51

Lol I do usually drink a lot- bit but I think he was fishing for info which is tactless and rude.

Never mind. It's mostly that it made an awkward convo and I didn't want people to guess yet!

Ah yes. The grandparent radars are up, they have hair triggers you know. Best of luck. :)

I wouldn't get too upset, they're just excited/hopeful for a new grandbaby.

Mintyy · 05/05/2014 18:53

I think you should have stood up, tipped the table over, screamed at him that he is evil, made dh leave with you, and go NC with the inlaws forever.

What a horrible old man he must be. Boke!

Yama · 05/05/2014 18:54

Yeah, it's a pain in the neck. We decided to tell families I was pregnant with dc2 at about 6 weeks because it was Christmas and I couldn't face the 'ooh, you're not drinking' comments.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 05/05/2014 18:55
Hmm

Drinks a lot and it's other people's fault when they notice? Riiight.

BonjourMinou · 05/05/2014 18:55

Alas the next 5 weeks will be incredibly annoying as you find yourself having to dodge increasingly outright questions. At least they will be if they were anything like mine! You'll still enjoy telling them all when you're ready though, I totally understand wanting to wait. Also... Congratulations! Flowers

JonesRipley · 05/05/2014 18:56

Blimey

What a senile geriatric old bastard

JonesRipley · 05/05/2014 18:56

Congratulations.

Bowlersarm · 05/05/2014 18:57

Of course YABU - it was out of character.

Congratulations!

Martorana · 05/05/2014 19:01

"Lol I do usually drink a lot- bit but I think he was fishing for info which is tactless and rude."

No it isn't. Even if he was. Which he may or may not have been, he's just being human. But take offence if you like- it's make it easier to refuse to allow your in laws to see the baby until it's 13.

ShatnersBassoon · 05/05/2014 19:02

He sounds normal to me. He's noticed unusual behaviour, commented on it, had an unsatisfactory response, so he's persisted. Tell him you've joined AA if you really won't confirm what he strongly suspects.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 05/05/2014 19:04

I found out I was pregnant Christmas Eve, had both sets of parents over Christmas Day. I got husband to make me "gin and tonic" with no gin in it, it was like the Blackadder episode where Baldrick has to bring his special beer. I confessed before pudding anyway.

Joules68 · 05/05/2014 19:05

In laws can never win can they?

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 05/05/2014 19:06

"In laws can never win can they?"

Nope Sad

DotToDott · 05/05/2014 19:06

At least they didn't proceed to spike your drink with gin- which the barmaid in my local did after i ordered a soda and lime and had to endure "ooooh is there something you're not telling us" etc etc.

went to loo, came back and her and my friend had decided it would be hilarious to put gin in my drink Hmm. thankfully i wasnt actually pregnant.

yes the comments are annoying but you admit yourself you do drink alot, people are bound to notice and comment without really thinking.

WooWooo · 05/05/2014 19:10

Say that you are doing lent but missed the start so are doing it now?

Catsmamma · 05/05/2014 19:11

there's nothing more likely to get a Hmm than someone not drinking...except claiming to be on antibiotics.

just take the drink and don't drink it...pass it to dh, tip it into the rubber plant, wander to the kitchen and lose it in the sink, ask if it is corked if you have winesnobs about ;)

twice people have confided in me at a christmas do that they were pg but not telling...I get extra booze, and a secret to keep :o

paxtecum · 05/05/2014 19:31

Say you are doing a detox.

Isn't it lovely that he's interested.

Andrewofgg · 05/05/2014 19:43

YABU but not very. Give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a casual comment. You want ILs onside.

And a million congratulations!
